Id probably just buy a plant, leave it in a spare small tank and watch them breed, i got my second batch in less than 2 weeks 1 batch a week of about 30 Dont touch them for a few weeks and watch that tank get infested with them Then remove what you need for your maintank and leave the others...

Its caused by fish waste Ie poo and wee aswell as uneaten food Just have to keep doing water changes till your filter cycles and bebeficial bacteria grow enough to convert that waste to nitrate

Could you not remove say a quater of the media from the ild filter into the new filter Then but the new filter in an unused tank/bucket if need be then leave that running and dose it with ammonia to build up the new filter colony
