I've now managed to get some media from a established tank and I transported it home in their water and added it and the water to my filter. Hopefully this should speed it all up.
my 4ft tank has been running for around a week with NO heater attatched at all. i filled it around a week ago with cold water from the hose. today my fluval E heater arrived and upon dropping it in the water is sitting around 24 degrees. so even with the hot weather its still not enough for me...
the local shops i have seen selling these crabs have loads per tank. so if they are not to be in groups when do they advertise it? so confusing for the buyer.
thanks for the links, i have ordered one of the gravel syphons for when i need to do partial changes but for when i drop all the water i will use one of these for ease as i cant be bothered making one :)

thanks chaps i will have another read and try to understand further. in the meantime i best get some bits ready for when i need to do a big water swap. so i need somthing to treat tap water and someway of getting over 200 litres out my house without any mess.
maybe a long hose and syphon it all...
it is used media but has been dry for 24 hours so i was advised its all dead. the tank was in use but that also sat dry for over 24 hours. i got some plants from the local shop so maybe they may have some on the leaves but i doubt its enough to kick start a 230 litre tank.
its 9.5 and water only, shook it and no froth. also sniffed it because im a #118#### :P.
i struggled to find it but the company toolstation which are all over the country stock it for £2.19
just had a read and its 9.5 % ammonia so its fine. just added 11.5ml to my 230 litre tank :/. im not sure what to do next. baby steps i guess to nail this water setup.

i have just got this ammonia, is this the stuff i need to use?
hi, i dont know of anyone local who can spare me any filter media but i am able to get some water from a established tank. is this worth doing to speed up my new system. if so how much will i need. mine is a 210 litre system.
thanks for the heads up guys :). i want to do this right so a cycle sounds best.
i have done some water tests so far but if im honest i dont quite understand the results.
