    DIRT

I have 2 sand based tanks which suffer from a similar problem. I haven't as yet found the perfect solution and so as you I do a small hoover job every week to keep down unsightly waste products. Have tried to over filtrate - by using additional filter systems but this only helps mildly.

What's a good SMALL bottom feeder fish...

I'd go with YBae's suggestion of a couple of Kuhli Loaches. They're great fun to look out for and seem to do a good scavenger role in some of my tanks. They don't get too big and are definitely not equipped to do any damage to other residents.

    Fishing...

Good to hear all the answers on this issue. But it would seem that there are positives to fishing as a hobby as long as the fish are returned and the money made from permits etc. is spent on maintaining the natural environment. I shall sleep better tonight :D

    Fishing...

My passion started with fish after my dad took me fishing. I was amazed that under the dark waters things were alive. :o :o But now that I am a keen fish keeper is it correct to still want to go fishing? :/ What are your thoughts on this query?? -_-

    Cold Plecs?

About to start a re-vamp on a friends tank that contains 2 fancy gold fish and to common plecs that are about 4" long. They are both too pale in my mind and I am putting this down to the fact they're in cold water?? Can plecs survive in cold water?? Can I extract these fish and aclimatise them...

    My Bichir collection

Wow - David - cool fish. I think we'd all like more info on tank, conditions, feeding etc... Unusual fish are always of interest.

    Oscars

I only have 1 currently in 40g tank with Fluval external and a fluval internal running. He has 20% water changes every week but is very good at letting me know when the water quality has dropped as he goes slightly grey. He is very much a pet - unlike most other fish.

    Oscars

I bought a small 3" Oscar and have now seen him grow to a healthy looking 5" fish. He is so interactive! He will eat from my hands and crunches pellats like a 3 year with a blocked up nose - lots of noise! He loves to eat worms, mussles and Hikari large pellats. Only problem is he won't share...

    Convicts

Convicts are usually pretty easy to breed so not all LFS will take them. Nevertheless good luck.

Does that mean we should use aussies for cycling tanks as they tested necleur bombs in Australia  ???

    Fluval 4 Carbon ? ? ?

A fluval 4+ can take foam carbon strips specifically designed for Fluvals and available from most local fish stores. Goldfish at 26 to 27c :/ I'd say probably but you need a goldfish person rather than me. Hope you get the additional info you need.

    new tank

Krazitrain I would take Anna's advice. I too love tiger barbs as they're so active and look good in shoals. BUT they will attack the Angels and or Gouramis. :/ I have never kept Tiger Barbs with anything other than Tiger Barbs! Other than a plec or bristlenose for cleaning. I hate to look in...

    Water changes.

Mimifish For me in tanks where I have larger - "dirtier fish" - I run water changes every 7 - 10 days. These water changes consist of a 20% change. Alternate changes I use the hoover to extract the water and give the substrate a good clean up. But make sure never to combine a substrate clean...

    hardy fishy?

These are the freshwater fish I have found to be most hardy: Zebra Danios White Cloud Minnows Gold Barbs Sword Tails / Platties All of the above have been successful in newly cycled tanks and have proven to be hardy for me but I guess different areas will make different fish "hardy" for each...

    Convicts

Some of my babies are kept and given to my LFS in place of credit notes for other items and some... ....are fed to my Oscars. Sorry. :*) Convicts once paired and breeding seem to go at it very regularily and to keep them all would be impossible when I get 40 fish grown from each brood.

    alligator gar...

That fish would take more than the tip off an index finger - cripes - he'd take the bottom half of your arm! Jaws - eat your heart out!! :hyper:

    alligator gar...

Yikes I'm never river swimming again! More info on the photo and the big fish please. Is it you or a friend in the photo or just a photo you found? Yeah....and why the drunk kitty?? :/

    Convicts

A bristlenose is a small catfish that will do a good job as a cleaner within the tank. A pleco may be easier to purchase and will do the same role within the tank. I have a 30g tank containing a breeding pair of convicts (supplied by flippin_thing..) who share their tank with a brsistlenose...

how to know the diff from male/female betta

There's another thread going on where this is well described under Bettas. But... Males are more brightly coloured with longer fins. Females are usually more dull and have no "plumage."

    Rescued Fish

Got 5 of these chaps from a tank that I dismantled in an old ladies house who no longer wanted to keep her fish. Funny guys that seem to get picked on despite their size. I think that they're commonly called Hero's? -_- Am I right?

    Treatments - do they work??

Is it me or do any of the "off the shelf" treatments actually work!? I have had success with white spot treatment but am never sure if it's my efforts or that of the treatment. -_- I currently have a Convict with a fungal growth on his pectoral fin  . Nothing seems to have...

    my new toy

Bikes are fab. I lived in London for 5 years and a bike was the best way to get about so I invested in a Yamaha YZF600R - nick named the thundercat. Top fun. I had 2 years of fast travel and some good weekend fun but moved back into the country and girlfriend forced it's sale. It was a sad day...

    Hi

Ph at 8 is not a real issue at this time. Keep an eye to assess the level and if it keeps climbing add some peat bags into the filter to reduce it. Never kept shrimp so somebody else will have to help you out there. Don't add fish for at least 3 - 4 weeks. Numbers of fish depend on their...

    Hello All

Yup - keep an eye on those params. Your lfs should keep you informed of what your purchases prefer and how big they will grow. Make sure you question them on your purchases. Unfortunately not all shops ask the right questions. Cory's are also much happier in groups of 3 or more. Enjoy the...

    My new 26 gal tank

Well the results speak for themselves. I have just aquired photshop and I guess I should have a play with my digicam to see if I can equal your results. Photoshop is such a massive tool - so much to learn and understand!
