hmmm i'm not sure. If a wood is not used to spending large amounts of time in the water, it will eventually rot. Wood that grows in marsh's/bogs should be fine but i'm no expert. I could be totally wrong

i recently swapped my fluval U2 for a JBL external e700. I basically did just that, removed the two sponges from the U2 and crammed them into my external. I put one sponge in one of the trays and the other in another tray. No fish deaths at all and water quality wasnt affected
