What type of fish should I get for my freshwater aquarium? Something that is not to fragile and nice and colorful. Any suggestions?

What will happen to the fish if there is an electricity cut? Last year (i didn't have any fish) we had a day long power cut because of the snow. What will happen to the fish? Can you buy battrie powered stuff? And what if it's just a short power cut?

So I'm gonna be buying an aquarium and i want to know which is the best filter. I only know the tetra filters but is there better?
