    Needlenose fish

Needlenose gars can grow really big in the wild. The one we had in the 1980's liked eating guppies whole. They mainly are top swimmers but will swim anywhere to catch a fish, if hungry enough. Try some plants that it can use for cover, and I hope you have a big tank. We resorted to feeding it...

    Malawi or tanganyika, maybe both?

Malawis are generally very agressive, tanganyikas are a little less agressive. Do not mix them together! The malwis will kill and destroy the tanganyikans. I am trying the crowding thing with my malawis, lots of hiding places but still much agression, splashing, missing tail fins, etc... Best...

    Tiger Barbs

I have to warn you that it is my experience that tiger barbs are the most agressive and hardy of the little fish out there. I have a 125 gallon tank and they went after the angel fish like gangbusters. They even chased the weakest tiger barb until it died. Now keep my tiger barbs in a 55...

Dyed Bettas!!??? More like Died Bettas!

Silver, You have to remember that the bettas cannot be kept in the same tank, so therein lies the problem. Does Wal mart and every other lfs get 20 ten gallon tanks just for bettas because you complained? Defintely not. The betta males cannot be kept together and can live for a long time in a...

    painted fish

Very easy to spot, they are clear except for two brush stroke size color marks on each side of the fish... usually in some florescent un-natural color.

I just read somthing I need to KNOW !

The reason that site said to turn your heater off is the chance of you bumping into the heater with your hand is slight. But if you touch that heater with your hand by accident while the heater is on... ouch. Heaters are very hot when the light is on. Always be careful not to touch a heater...

    Constant algae

I always have been told that frequent water changes would result in even more algae. Maybe some light control would help!!! I change the water once a month, but talking about twice a week... thats just too much.

    Info on parrot cichlids

I agree that we should stop buying these injected fish, but I'm here to say that the parrots are really healthy and enjoyable fish... sorry. The fruit tetras had no signs of injection and are white. The parrots have lost all thier injected color and have remained orange and healthy for more...

    the new fish guy, Hooben

It's nice to see such a well designed site. I first got into aquariums thanks to my daughter, 5 years ago. I am officially hooked on aquariums now. I have 7 tanks ranging in size from 29 gallons to 110 gallons. Fishes I own are: tiger barbs, silver dollars, fancy guppies, mollies, bettas...

Advise on setting up new Cichlid tank.

Brichardi are beautiful fish! My first tank ( I still have it) consist of 2 brichardi and one big severum in a 38 gallon tank with a pleco. I like the tanganyika cichlids better than the malawi cichlids. I think the malawi are way to agressive. The water should be fine as I find that...

    Info on parrot cichlids

I have 4 parrots in a 110 gallon tank. They are not shy fish and always come to the front of the tank when someone approaches. They share the tank with fruit tetras, tiger barbs and a pleco. They sometimes are injected with dye which is sad, but mine have all returned to a bright orange color...
