    New babies!

Thanks! The fourth baby is in fact alive ... I can see its tail wiggling quickly. (too quickly to be disturbed by the itty bitty current that makes it into the breeding box.) It just likes to spend most of its time hiding in the riccia. Although the riccia is too frustrating to have in the...

    New babies!

While doing stuff on the computer with my husband, I glanced to my left and saw a new baby darting around. That, of course, prompted me to go on a "baby hunt" with the net, trying to move the babies into the breeder box so they wouldn't get eaten. There are now four babies in the breeder box...

    Black Mollies

This may sound goofy, but sometimes the livebearers can appear to be pregnant, being really fat, and turns out they just have to "poop". *grin* I've never been able to catch my mollie "mamas" before they have babies, so stopped trying to catch them beforehand. Mollies are particular about...

    pleco or oto?

I thought they were two different species! Oops! Oh well. I don't understand how the common plecostamus I had did fine in salted tank, and now all of a sudden I'm hearing that I can't put them in salted tank. Maybe I'll get a snail instead, or something. *shrug*

Rapid fish loss problem - can anyone help?

Your problem lies in that you added too many fish, too quickly. You also have aggressive fish in with community fish, and fish that prefer brackish water in with those who can't tolerate salt. Mollies, for example, love slightly hard and salty water, but they can't be in the same tank with...

Don't want to boil my fishies...

I don't even USE my heater, unless it's winter time. Mine doesn't click on and off ... it doesn't have a temperature gauge or anything. So what I have to do is keep a close eye on the thermometer in the tank and make sure that if the tank starts getting warmer than it needs to be, unplug the...

    Fish Water

UGH I'm glad my siphon/gravel vacuum doesn't require that I put my mouth anywhere near the tubing. I don't think the fish water could hurt you but if you have any sort of mildew or mold growing in the tubing that you use to siphon, THAT could make you sick.

    Too much tannin?

Just "scrubbing" the driftwood isn't enough to prepare it for the aquarium. I've got driftwood in mine, and it isn't turning my water brown because I prepped it first. Here's what I did. I put the driftwood in a pot of water and boiled it for half an hour. Poured the water down the drain, put...

my platy had fry, but shes still fat?

I know Mollies can store sperm for up to six months I think, and just release babies once a month until they finally deplete what they've had stored up. Platies might be the same way, it might be a livebearer thing in general. If she has a gravid spot (which by the way, I've NEVER noticed on my...

Dyed and Hybrid Fish..what we all should know

Am I the ONLY one who doesn't take offense to the Glo-Fish?? They were bred to detect pollutants in the water. They glow under uv light. And yet so many people are taking offense to these fish. They are simply a genetically altered version of zebra danios, and I don't see why it's wrong to...

    pleco or oto?

Salt is a no-no for plecos? That's odd, the pleco I did have did fine and dandy with salt in the tank. And salt is a no-no for oto's too? Well that's just peachy ... my aquarium glass is slimy and getting cloudy. (not the water ... the glass ... when I look real close, it looks spotty.) The...

    Water changes

You don't need to bag your fish. I agree with what's already been said, that catching and bagging them stresses them more than just leaving them alone would. Here's how I do my water changes. I do about 20-30% change once a week. Using my gravel siphon thing, I empty the water out of the tank...

    albino Mickey Mouse Platy?

What I'm trying to figure out is how you can say albino platies don't exist? Platies can be lots of colors, right? Albino by definition (breaking out my trusty worn-out dictionary here) is : 1. a person whose skin, hair and eyes lack normal coloration because of genetic factors; albinos have a...

    I'm forever blowing bubbles.....

I've got an air wall. My mollies and platies love to play in the bubbles. My daughter had one of those goofy bubbly treasure chests in her 2 gallon betta tank (not that he needed it, but she's FIVE!) until she broke it. It even had a diver attached to a chain. *shudder* A question ... to bubble...

    Undergravel Filters

When I first started my 15 gallon, I had an UGF in there because that was what was in there when my friend gave me his old aquarium. I did weekly gravel vacuuming, and there was always TONS of crap (sorry bad pun) that was getting sucked up, and I couldn't get it all without removing too much...

    Mistakes learnt

So far here are my losses, and reasons... 2 black molly females (fungus) 1 black molly male (spike during cycling ... my fault for choosing the blacks for cycling tank) 1 red wag platy male (died during same spike in cycling) 3 mollie fry (for some weird thing where they lost ALL their slime...

    albino Mickey Mouse Platy?

I just got a Mickey Mouse Platy a couple of days ago. It's so white that it almost looks transparent, the "chin" area and near the gills is pinkish, and of course the black "mickey mouse" marking on the tail. Is it an albino? Or is it just white Mickey Mouse? Just curious ... it wouldn't...

    pleco or oto?

I'm in need of a new algae eating fish for my livebearer/planted tank. I did have a pleco, but he got too big to hide in my hollow log decoration thing, so I gave him to my mother for her outdoor pond. (LOTS of algae to eat there, and some White Cloud Minnows to keep him company too.) Since my...

Newbie ... ideas for algae eaters?

Hi, I just found the forum while looking for info on mollies. My name is Erin, I've been keeping an aquarium for about four or five months now (I've lost count). My aquarium stats : 15 gallon (US gallons) tall, freshwater, gravel substrate live plants (Aponogeton, some Riccia) driftwood Topfin...
