    New Tank Cycling

I've had my 40 gallon running for a little over three weeks, with live sand, live rock and 2 damsels, and still have yet to see ammonia go above 0.025. I have been testing the water everyday. Is this cycling ever going to happen? Also, I just started getting a diatom outbreak a few days ago...

    anemone

its about 24" deep. its an odd shaped tank, 25"l x 18"w x 24"d. Thats why lighting it with anythign other then m.h. lights has been hard. its hard to find anything that can light a 40 gallon tank thats 24" long, unless I spend as much on 4x55w power compacts that I can on a M.H.

    anemone

would it be possible to keep an anemone in anything less than 4 watts per gallon? If this measure is used to make sure the creatures on the bottom receive enough light, then would placing the anemone on the rock near mid to upper part of the tank recieve its required light, even if it is only...

    Powerhead too strong?

he's staying to the bottom of the tank, and the powerhead intake is at the top. However, it loos like hes either swimming backwards or being dragged to the side of the tank and bumping into the glass. My smaller damsel just hangs out in the live rock.

    Powerhead too strong?

I have two powerhead 402's (270g/h each) in my tank, with only one running at a time. I have noticed that my damsel will be swimming backwards alot towards whichever powerhead is on. I have lowered the output of the powerhead with the control knob, but he still seems to be getting drawn...

    cleaning crew

is there a different acclimating method for shrimp, snails, hermits, and stars? I would prob get a cleaner shrimp and maybe a dozen turbo snails today. I hear that cleaner shrimp are pretty sensitive when it comes to acclimating them so I would probably do a drip method for him, but could I do...

Thanks for the advise...I was just comparing the way the other live rock looked. The one I bought had alot of colors and what appeared to be a little featherduster on it. Every other rock in there looked plain and a greyish color

    Skimmer for 40 gallon

Currently I have an Eheim ecco 2234 and an Aquaclear 300 along with two aquaclear powerheads (dont remember the gph rating off hand) but ther are fairly powerful. Is a protein skimmer still a necessity at the moment, or could I get along without it?

    Fast Cycling

Thanks... the reason I didnt add so much live rock at first is that the LFS only had one piece that I actually liked and look fully cured, although the sign said it was cured, it pretty much looked like normal base rock. There was nothing growing on it, and no colors. So I figured I would buy...

I added 40 lbs of live sand to my 40 gallon tank and finished filling it with water yesterday afternoon. I also put in 6 lbs of live rock. I tested yesterday and ammonia was at 0.25 ppm. and nitrate and nitrite at 0, pH 8.1, salinity 1.024. Today I tested it and all were at 0, is this a case...

    Skimmer for 40 gallon

I still need to buy a skimmer for my 40 gallon tank. Im in a fix because Iam not sure if I should "trust" the lfs and get the best skimmer they have which is a Seaclone, or try to find one online somewhere. Another one I am looking at online right now is the CPR bakpak skimmer. Is there...

    Saltwater mixing

I drained the tank, leaving about an inch of water to keep the sand wet. I started mixing up another batch of 20 gallons last night and tested it with a new hydrometer I just bought, and everything is looking good. I'll add that 20 gallons shortly and begin mixing another 20 gallons. Thanks...

    Saltwater mixing

While starting up my tank tonight I mixed about 15 gallons, adding about 1 cup of salt per 5 gallons of water. maybe a little more. I tested the mixture and it was at 1.022. I added this initial 15 gallons to the tank, that already had the live sand on the bottom, and tested it again. this...

    New 40 gallon tank

The live rock I would be getting would not be for filtration..at first. As I said before I would probably only get 10 or so pounds initially. That being said, besides a protein skimmer, what other type of filtration would be adequate. A power filter? btw...this is what I will most likely...

    New 40 gallon tank

I have been playing around with the thought of using a sump for this system, to allow me to grow into a reef system. New 40 gallon tank

Right now I am leaning towards the 40 gallon, just because I'm new and realize the bigger the tank the "easier" it is. So far I am thinking about 50lbs of half live sand and have "dead" argonite. 10 or so pounds of base rock and another 10 of live rock. I will probably put in a damsel or two...

    New 40 gallon tank

Hello all, I was recently given a 20 gallon high tank with thoughts of making it into saltwater, probably fish only. I have mixed the water and was about to put in some argonite or live sand when my neighbor calls me up saying he is giving away his 40 gallon tank, looks like a cube. I don't...
