I've had my 40 gallon running for a little over three weeks, with live sand, live rock and 2 damsels, and still have yet to see ammonia go above 0.025. I have been testing the water everyday. Is this cycling ever going to happen? Also, I just started getting a diatom outbreak a few days ago...

i thought that it was best to wait until after you cyle to add the cleanup crew.

is it safe to add the entire cleanup crew into the tank at 2 weeks into the start of it?

its about 24" deep. its an odd shaped tank, 25"l x 18"w x 24"d. Thats why lighting it with anythign other then m.h. lights has been hard. its hard to find anything that can light a 40 gallon tank thats 24" long, unless I spend as much on 4x55w power compacts that I can on a M.H.

would it be possible to keep an anemone in anything less than 4 watts per gallon? If this measure is used to make sure the creatures on the bottom receive enough light, then would placing the anemone on the rock near mid to upper part of the tank recieve its required light, even if it is only...

I have read alot of feedback about CPR's and it seems there were a few complaints about alot of bubbles from the skimmer. is this a serious problem or is there an easy fix for this

he's staying to the bottom of the tank, and the powerhead intake is at the top. However, it loos like hes either swimming backwards or being dragged to the side of the tank and bumping into the glass. My smaller damsel just hangs out in the live rock.

I have two powerhead 402's (270g/h each) in my tank, with only one running at a time. I have noticed that my damsel will be swimming backwards alot towards whichever powerhead is on. I have lowered the output of the powerhead with the control knob, but he still seems to be getting drawn...

Not that I plan on buying one anytime soon...as my tank is only 1 week old. I'd just like to find out some info on these guys for future refernce.

is there a different acclimating method for shrimp, snails, hermits, and stars? I would prob get a cleaner shrimp and maybe a dozen turbo snails today. I hear that cleaner shrimp are pretty sensitive when it comes to acclimating them so I would probably do a drip method for him, but could I do...

Thanks for the advise...I was just comparing the way the other live rock looked. The one I bought had alot of colors and what appeared to be a little featherduster on it. Every other rock in there looked plain and a greyish color

Currently I have an Eheim ecco 2234 and an Aquaclear 300 along with two aquaclear powerheads (dont remember the gph rating off hand) but ther are fairly powerful. Is a protein skimmer still a necessity at the moment, or could I get along without it?

There are 20 gallons in the tank right now, The temperature in the tank right now is about 70. The bucket is around 78-80. I am using a Marine Enterprises, Inc. hydrometer.

The live rock I would be getting would not be for filtration..at first. As I said before I would probably only get 10 or so pounds initially. That being said, besides a protein skimmer, what other type of filtration would be adequate. A power filter? btw...this is what I will most likely...
