I bought a gourami from LFS a month ago. It was sold to me as a "dwarf honey" but it has the spots like a 3 spot gourami. So my question is do dwarf or honey or any other species ever have 3 spots. As an aside, it has been peacefully living with my other two dwarf gouramis.

I am not an expert, and can only speak from my personal experience. Back in college (we are talking 20 years ago) I had tiger barbs. Of the 100's of fish I have had since, these were the most mean-spirited fish I have seen!

UMMMM because of basic supply and demand principles. If you are creating a demand (buying fish that are dyed) then supply will keep up (create/torture more fish).
