Seeding A New Filter - How

thats pretty much what I've done. I was able to get 4 out of the six foam pads in the new filter (under the new pads) and all of the ceramic noodles. My intention was to remove one pad a month until only the new media remains.

Seeding A New Filter - How

I've been using a pair of  fluval u3's for the last few years and, over the years, they've gotten a little damaged to the point where they need replacing. I've purchased a Fluval 306 as I want to move to an external filter so I'll need to seed it to get it processing.    My question is, how much...

What Is The 'stuff' Growing On My Background?

My tank is relatively spartan in that I now only have single (very large) black moor goldfish in a 120L tank with substrate and 3D backing. Its the backing that it is growing on like tufts of weeds on a pavement. The tank did have a second blackmoor but it died of a tumour and the current...

What Is The 'stuff' Growing On My Background?

Yeah, definitely looks that way. Just been reading how much of a SOAB it is to get rid of too.

What Is The 'stuff' Growing On My Background?

I know this thread is a little pointless without pictures but I've noticed that I have tufts of black/grey fibres 'growing' on my background. At first I thought it was dirt deposited by the filters but it doesnt come off easily and is quite fibrous and they dont come off during cleaning. They...

Moving House - How To Transport A Fish?

I have a large (about 6-7 inches in body length) Goldie and we're moving house tomorrow. Whats the best way of taking the fish with us? He's in a 120L tank and I did think about draining it about a quarter full and put cling film with a few air holes in but not sure this would work without still...

Death Of A Fish - What To Do Next?

Not sure the surviving fish knows what to do with itself now its on its own. They'd been in the tank together for the last four years and now its just constantly swimming from one side of the tank to the other.

Death Of A Fish - What To Do Next?

As I recall most of the advice I had five years ago when I was setting the tank up was that it was 50L per fish but thats by-the-by now. I can only say that my 2 where seemingly happy in 120L and the water quality was fine. I had 2 Fluval U3 filters with a recommended tank size of 90-120L each...

Death Of A Fish - What To Do Next?

Hi, thanks for your reply. The general rule of thumb (so I've always been told) is a minimum of 50 litres per fish with heavy filtration due to goldies being messy fish. I suppose I could go to a 75 litre tank for it. The concern I have is about mixing fish of different sizes. If I went out and...

Death Of A Fish - What To Do Next?

For the last four years or so I've had two Blackmoor Goldfish in a 120L tank and up until very recently they were doing fine. Both were about 5 inches in length and in general good health. Unfortunately one developed a cancerous growth and died last night. Now Im not sure what to do.    I have...

    Performing Surgery On A Fish....

Unfortunately the fish didn't survive long enough for me to contemplate surgically removing the growth. From last week it virtually double in size and the fish had been unwell the last couple of days spending most of its time 'hanging' in the tank or resting on the bottom. The symptoms of death...

    Performing Surgery On A Fish....

Not really TwoTank. I'm not going to do it unless it grows larger or starts to affect the fish. I'm hoping that with it being on the tail and not the body it should be a lot easier than the videos of people removing growths from the body.

    Performing Surgery On A Fish....

Thanks, thats very good reading. Do you have any suggestions for what to use to close and seal the wound? I've seen a spray on foam substance used by some people, which I assume is water resistant after after a few seconds, but not sure what it was.

    Performing Surgery On A Fish....

Okay, one of my Blackmoors has developed a 'growth' on its tail approximately 3mm in diameter. I'm not sure how long its had it but I only noticed it recently. It doesnt seem to be affecting the fish and if it doesnt get any bigger I'm happy to leave it be but I'm conscious it may be cancerous...

Need Some Inspiration - Rockery Based Tank

I'm currently planning a new 500L tank for next year and having now determined that my Blackmoors are herbivorous bulldozers (they've eaten EVERY plant I've put in with them) its looks like I'm going to have to rethink what I'm going to do for decoration. I dont want to have an empty tank...

    Blackmoor With A White 'zit'

Definitely doesn't move and its had it for about 5-6 weeks now and has looked exactly the same. The other fish in the tank have no marks at all.

I'll try and get a better shot but they dont like to say still and pose.

    Blackmoor With A White 'zit'

For the last few weeks one of my Blackmoors has had what looks like a white zit or ulcer on its mouth. At first I thought it might have been ick but its actually more like a skin tag. It only has the one white lump and the other fish arent affected. It doesnt seem to be bothering the fish at all...

What To Do With A Fish You Dont Like ?!?!

Unfortunately I dont think the GF will let me give him away. Im in the process of planning a custom built 450 litre tank for another room and due to his..er..personality, I was thinking of putting all the other fish in the new tank and buy a 50L tank just for him in the kitchen. Some people...

    Protecting New Leaves?

I have a tank with a couple of blackmoors and one of them eats every type of plant I put in the tank. Anubias have faired the best but as soon as new leaves start to grow, it eats the new leaves. It doesn't touch the more established leaves but the plants cant establish any decent growth before...

What To Do With A Fish You Dont Like ?!?!

I've had a couple of black moors for about 18 months now. One is your typical moor with the developed eyes and fairly placid personality. The other is, for want of a better word, a little b**erd! Whilst being a black moor his eyes never developed the bulbousness of your typical moor (could...

    Goldfish And Plants!

The only problem is I dont have any substrate (other than the gravel) so I've always stuck to rhizome based plants. I suppose I could leave it in a pot and semi submerge the pot.... I was hoping the java fern would be ok as goldies arent meant to like it but one of mine just eats anything put...

    Goldfish And Plants!

Okay, I've tried a variety of plants with my fancy goldies and so far they've managed to eat their way through all the plants I've tried to add to the tank ( Annubias (several varieties), Java Moss, Java Fern and a few more that I cant place off hand). Is there ANYTHING that these things cant...

    Gel Food

Broccoli, peas, kale, cabbage greens, multi vitamin (dissolved), vitamin C (dissolved), calcium carbonate (dissolved), tuna, spring water (non chlorinated water), paprika and gelatine to hold it all together, Smells awful though. I've seen another recipe on the web that uses a less greens and...

    Gel Food

I've been playing about the last week or so making my own gel food for my goldies (2x blackmoors approx 4inch body length). They seem to love it but I'm a little unsure as to how much to actually give them in comparison to the old flake/pellets. I've cut the gel in to roughly 1 cm cubes and...

Can I Squeeze Another One In?

Thats a no go then. I cant really fit a larger tank in to the space I have available. I figured 120L would be ok for two fish (using the 50L per fish rule of thumb). But I do already have plans to move to an external filter as I'm fed up with a fine layer of dirt on everything in the tank after...

Can I Squeeze Another One In?

Dimensions are approx (from memory) 80cm x 35cm x 45cm Filtration is two fluval u3 internals. Maintenance is weekly with 30-40% water change and filter clean outs.

Can I Squeeze Another One In?

I currently have a 120L tank with two blackmoor goldies. Now, a friend of mine is looking to offload a single ryukin because he's moving house and wont have the space to really keep a tank. I know it would be a squeeze but what's peoples thoughts on this?

External Filters - Reviews, opinions, Recommendations Etc.

It was in a 120L. If the fish got caught in the output, they'd do well to recover before being blasted against the glass on the opposite side of the tank. Also, those people with a Fluval 405, I dont suppose any of you know the foam pad dimensions? I want to see how it compares to the U3...

External Filters - Reviews, opinions, Recommendations Etc.

Ah right, thats better then. I do have live plants in the tank but only a few anubias attached to rocks and driftwood. Its mainly keeping the flow low enough not to blast the fish from one side of the tank to the other if they get caught in the stream.

External Filters - Reviews, opinions, Recommendations Etc.

I must admit, I hadnt considered the Hydor. I was drawn to the Fluval due to using their internals and the fact that there tends to be a fair few on eBay for around £30. Eheim mainly because they have a generally good repuatation for producing good filters. Whilst I agree you cant have too...

External Filters - Reviews, opinions, Recommendations Etc.

Im torn between the 205 and the 305. The tanks only 120L but I have goldfish who are notoriously messy but then I dont know if the 305 would be overkill.
  35. J

External Filters - Reviews, opinions, Recommendations Etc.

Im thinking the fluval's would be the best bet as it would be easier to transfer the media across from the fluval internals.

External Filters - Reviews, opinions, Recommendations Etc.

I've actually just thought of another problem. I have a Jewel Rekord 120 tank and Im not sure if the canopy to the tank has any allowances for the tubing of an external filter. May have to have a look at the weekend with a view to 'modifying' the lid. i.e. cut a section out.

External Filters - Reviews, opinions, Recommendations Etc.

I'm planning a move away from internal filters to an external one. I was looking at the Eheim Professional 3 series but having read a number of reviews Im concerned about the fact that a number of people report the filters developing leaks. Does anyone have experience of the 3 series who can...

Switching Filters - Best Way Of Seeding?

The filter is a vertical tower design of about 12" and draws water in from each side, passing it through foam and ceramic media before ejecting it out the centre. I can adjust the height so that its nearer the waters surface but I've a feeling that would just alter the distribution pattern as it...

Switching Filters - Best Way Of Seeding?

Im currently using two fluval U3's in my tank and Im still not happy with the level of filtration. After about a week or so, my plants and rocks etc have a fine layer of dirt on them. It comes off but its a royal pain in the backside. I've tried to eliminate as many sources as possible e.g. I...
