What brand "staple" flake food do you use?

So far just TetraMin flakes and granules with some SF Bay brand freeze-dried brine shrimp.

    Adding Cardinal tetras soon (Yay!)

Impur and Lateral Line: Thanks again! Lateral Line: Sadly, my wife is not at all interested in fish. Impur: I grew up in the pacific northwest (loved the water); the water here in the midwest is quite different. I see that you can relate! Updated information: As of my tests last night, my...

    Adding Cardinal tetras soon (Yay!)

impur and Lateral Line, thanks very much for the advice! My wife (Biochem PhD) said something similar about RO water last night. I do not fully understand water chemistry, so I would like to avoid trying to change the water parameters without such understanding. My readings as of last night...

    Adding Cardinal tetras soon (Yay!)

My tank has been cycling for about three weeks. On Monday I finally observed nitrites and nitrates, so I expect to be adding my fish in one to three weeks. The water currently in the tank (from my tap and conditioned) has a ph in the high 7's, and is very hard. I understand that the cardinals...

Peat in my filter: Good idea?

Thanks! You are not kidding. I have been doing web searches about Cardinals and Dwarf Gouramis, and I am seeing some conflicting stuff. I am opposed to dumping chemicals into my tank (except dechlorinator) but I think that some peat would naturally make my water softer and less alkaline...

    Speed Up A Cycle...

I'm about to try fishless cycling myself, and the five drop per day method is with lab grade 28% ammonia. Household stuff is 4-10%, so count what gets you up to 5ppm and use that much every day. Might be one or two tablespoons full... -BRN

Peat in my filter: Good idea?

I am expecting to start my fishless cycle in four days, and I have been reading Baensch's "Aquarium Atlas", and I found the following info out about the fish I am planning to keep one the tank is cycled: Zebra Danios: I could fill the tank with gravy and they would be okay (just kidding but...

    Cycling

I know that I could not wait for three months for my tank to cycle. I admire your patience. I would go with the nice hardy danios or white cloud minnows to cycle at this point. -BRN

all-glass hoods able to attach HOBF?

Drs. Foster and Smith do (if you're still going to order online) http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...=1&N=2004&Nty=1 Its where I got my 30" hood for my 29 gallon tank... :) -BRN edit: Probably not the best hood for a well planted tank...

all-glass hoods able to attach HOBF?

I know the question has been answered but I would like to add: I actually emailed All-Glass with the question a few days ago, and they were very helpful and have earned my business. (I now have an All-Glass tank, hood and stand)

Dyed and Hybrid Fish..what we all should know

I think that I have seen dyed danios: One of my LFS's has fish that look like zebra danios but have orange bodies, the color orange that an oscar can have. The tails are the standard zebra color. They actually look dyed to me. I was very sad to see that, as I won't shop there anymore. Of...

    The Basics of Plastic Plants

Thanks, that was great! Here is another one about the dangers of something that your tank is *literally* full of: http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html  -BRN

    Filter selection (descriptions are confusing)

Thanks very much for all your help! According to a nice email I got from All Glass, a Penguin 330 won't easily fit in my chosen hood. In summary (from what I have read here), an Aquaclear 300 or Emperor 280 will do a more than adequate job for my 29 gallon setup. Fluvals and Eheim eccos...

    Filter selection (descriptions are confusing)

Greetings! I am getting closer to the point where I will be ordering most of my equipment. Previously mentioned background: I will be getting a 29 gallon (us) tank (30x12x18 inches). After a hopefully brief fishless cycle with some borrowed gravel I will be adding six zebra danios. Once I...

    Filter size question

Another question as I plan things out: Would I do better with a cannister filter? I'd rather not pay for an ehiem, but a fluval for my size tank would only cost me about 20% more (plus media) than the emperor 280 that is my candidate for power filter. I'm looking for a good mix of ease of...

    hospital and quarantine tank question

Based on advice found here I will definately be setting up a small quarantine tank, perhaps a MiniBow 5 or Eclipse Hex 5. Something that I can fit in the den that will accomidate the two fish I am adding at any given time. What I would like to know is: Is there an easy way to keep the...

    glofish whats your take

With all due respect, why does genetically modified = bad? (Looking for a rational discussion here :) ) I think they're pretty neat, but I don't think that I can get them where I live. I will be using their more mundane cousins in my community tank.

    Filter size question

Thanks for the advice! :) The dealer that I am planning on using has the 400 for $2 (US) more than the 280, so I was seriously considering it. I don't want to overdo it.

    How much filtration?

Thanks all for the warm welcome! :D Alaska: not much of a story. Bruce was my favorite uncle, and unrelated to that in any way: many years ago when I was in college I used to keep a tropical freshwater tank. More often than not it was sadly neglected and had 'old tank syndrome'. Being...

    Filter size question

Hi there! I am planning on adding a 29 gallon (US) tropical community tank to my den; it will be the only tank in the house. I have been doing a lot of interesting reading and learning. I will stick to 'hearty' schooling fish for now. I have read that a good guildeline for filtration is...
