Thanks for all the help everyone - although I did read the discus pages on Columnaries and got quite scared!!
Well Angelina has been on terramycin (oxytetracyclin) dosed food for 5 days now, and the little white patches have all disappeared, she seems a lot brighter and her food eating...
nitrite/ammonia = not detected
nitrate ~20 mg/l
120L - 36x12x15
mostly small fish;
4 zebras, 5 glowlights, 3 cardinals, 2 harlequins, 4 corys, now 1 otto :(
eheim 2213 filter with 2 L effisubstrat pro.........
fungus was on main body above lateral line
Hey Everybody,
My beautiful one and a half year old marble angel seems to be getting pop-eye in only one eye.... I have no idea why?? Water parameters are perfect, although I did have two ottos die a while back for unknown reasons, and the second wasnt found for a few days, by which time there...
Hi Guys,
My three ottos in my 120L have been living happily for about 6 months now, and i havent introduced any other fish for a few months. However, over the last 2 weeks i've noticed thta one of them has got progressively fatter around the belly and sides........ This has happened slowly...
I dont know for sure. Quite often the LFS has the odd escapee in the tank next to it so it is a possibility.....
Why do you ask?? My understanding, now, is that cardinals cannot get NTD?!?
PB
Thanks The-Wolf,
I did suspect that and stuck a does of anti-bac in with him last night........will have to just wait and see.....
I seem to have a nightmare getting cardinals acclimatised into a tank, with an attrition rate of around 50%........
once there in, i seem to be able to keep them...
Hi All,
I've just returned from a lovely w/e in Edinburgh to find one of my cardinals with about 4mm of colour loss in the end of its tail. And I'm sure its gotten worse (spread further up the body) from this morning to tonight................??
I've searched and read that Neon tetra disease...
if im not mistaken these eheim heaters have an easy re-calibration option. You undo a little screw - or something - move the dial round to what your thermometers actually reads and do back up.....
PB
Konrad,
that makes no sense whatsoever. If gravity pull water into a filter by a siphon, there is just as much force against gravity to push it back up to the tank.
I was wondering why eheims like to be under this pressure to pump better.........
PB
Marvellous!!
thanks for your replies Sub/Tolak......
No.5 decresed head of water !!! Does the pump like to be under 'pressure' from having the tank well above it then??
this makes sense..... My tank is quite low level - maybe only 12 inches off the ground, so the pump's head is almost level...
Hi there,
I've been a bit worried about the flow on my 2213 recently as it has seemed a bit low, even after a total clean of media, so I 'measured' low long it took to flow 1 1/2 L - and it was about 30 sec which means its only pumping about 200 lph, not 350-400 lph as the specs suggest.
It...
I just bought 30ml of 100% Pharmaceutical grade tea tree oil form Holland and Barrett for £3.19, its on special........
Thats the equivalent of 3 Litres of MelaFix when made up to the 1% solution!!
Marvellous - thats more money for other fishy things.........
PB
Hi Alien Anna,
Yes Cardinals are notorious to acclimatise......
I wouldnt consider buying them online because of the extra stress of being parcelled off means you will be carrying the loss of transport not the LFS.
Speaking of LFS, I live in cambridge and am very happy with the Coral Cave in...
Believe it or not ALL humans as we know it are of the same species (Homo Sapiens Sapiens), so in no way is it hybridisation whoever we breed with.....
PB
you can pick up eheim 2213 on ebay for ~£25. They will run forever and its easy to get new spare parts online IF anything goes wrong. The run totally silent, you can fit about 3L of filter media into it - which is so much bigger than an internal. Plus you get all the space back in the tank...
this is exactly what ive been thinking.... Low power heaters have to be the way to go. If you have, say, 1x 50w heater in a 35g tank it may run almost continuosly, but it wont use any more electricity - as thats a constant dependant on how much water there is and ambient temp. The switch is...
This is something ive been wondering about for a while. I'm guess the most destructive non-disease event that can happen to all our fish is a heater/stat sticking on and boiling our fish........
From what I've read around the net and various reviews its a fairly random event that can...
welcome to the world of brown algae!!
everyone will tell you that it goes away by itself in time - and it does!!
but Ottos love to eat the stuff......

I've just read this aquarium story from this weeks nature news articles. makes a change from cell biology or stars!!
the link:

but you may need access, i cant remember, so the full story as well:

I couldnt of said it better myself BigNose. People on here often hand out totally irresponsable advice about things they do not understand.........
There are so many dodgy carcinogenic chemicals that we use in fish medicines and test kits without a second thought because were 'at home'. If i...
what youve got to remember is that a 55g weighs about 250kg. This is actually spread over a large area and so the pressure at an individual point is quite low.
I weigh 80kg and this all goes through my feet - maybe 250cm2 - your tank is probably around 6000cm2 and so the pressure at my feet...
If your running a smallish tank in the uk then Asda's smart price 'fountainhead spring' table water is only 2mg/ml nitrate, and 18p for a 2L bottle.........
I used it a couple of times to get nitrates back down to a low background
PB
Always use half the amount a test kit says - It'll last twice as long!!
e.g API nitrate, 5ml tank water, 10 drops bottle A, 10 drops bottle B.
Instead use 2.5ml water, 5 drops, 5 drops........
Perfect results....
PB
you want to use some clear white (distilled) vinegar. The acid in it will dissolve away and loosen the calcium carbonate or limescale deposits......
Ideally, put some toilet paper over the areas to be cleaned and soak this in vinegar - it helps to keep it in contact with the crud.
It is...
Does anyone know what kind of heater this is??
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...4311009066&rd=1
They keep on coming up on ebay for little money, and are supposed to be electronically controlled with no bi-metallic strip to get stuck on!!
PB
If anyone is really spending that much on little bottles of dechlorinator from a LFS you sholud all think about buying in bulk Sodium Thiosulphate. You can buy it off the net if you look, and uim sure i could dig out some concentrations required to use - its very easy.
It wont get rid of...
Luxum,
If you can get your hands on sodium nitrite - i think it maybe available commercially as it is used in canning meats and fish - you can feed both bacteria at the same time.
I used ~0.5 ppm ammonia, and 0.5ppm nitrite with a very small starter culture. This ends up feeding both bugs...
Luxum: I reakon you can have a full load of bacteria within 10 days - which is about the best ever you can get using 5ppm ammonia fishless cycling if everything goes perfect. The advantage of using a small container out of the tank is that you can monitor the breakdown of ammonia much quicker...
Dear all,
I just thought id let you know something really groovy I did a couple of weeks ago -although a lot of you cynics out there probably wont believe me!! This will kinda be two new ideas that ive been experimenting with since starting in fish keeping at the beginning of the year. Sorry...
I've just set up one exactly as you wish!! it works fine so far and my cories love snuffling in the sandy bit, and tend to stay away from the gravel even though its rounded and small!!
I used a greater depth of gravel then sand, especially at the 'interface'. This is because its easier to...
Today I am mostly sad as my first ever angel fish (Angelina) has unexpectedly died......
I bought it on friday from my LFS for only £3 and about an inch across, but 'fully formed'. She looked beautiful, no tattered fins, etc. I gradually acclimatised her to my well run-in 10g with 3 cardinals...
My zebras nipped my guppies to shreds over a week...... My conclusion was that the zebras felt threatened by them - big tails i guess - and they were occupying 'their' part of the tank, ie the top...... this was in an understocked 10g, but i guess It just wasnt enough space for the two top...
If you got yourself a nice big hexagonal tank or even a five sided tank you would have lots of angles. Some of them even have ones as big as 120' !!!!
sorry, im being facetious.............
AngELs....
PB
Thats unbeliable - they even 'suggest', in not so many words, that you should put a betta in there......... FOR FASHION........
I hope you have all emailed them a reasoned (or even a very rude one :grr: ) letter as to how BAD this is?
Do you have an equivalent of the RSPCA (anti-animal...
I'm a molecular cell biologist so I can use a piece of equipment at work called a spectrophotometer to give me readings accurate down to 0.001ppm!!!
I'm also lucky enough to be able to make my own test kits. You would not believe how easy a nitrite kit is!! There is literally 5 pence worth...
Thanks for your advice. The guy in the LFS seemed to think they would be okay, but after reading everything i can on the net i think this was a terrible suggestion!! :/
In the future i will not buy anything on someone elses recommendation alone, only when ive had a good surf - what would we...
Help! I bought 8 small (less than inch) Cardinal Tetras at the weekend, and one by one three have died since then. The first two constantly hid behind the filter in the dark and then seemed to lose all swim control - vertical swimming for a bit then kinda swimming okay, etc - dying a couple of...
