Never even thought about that mate. Yeah I turn it off, then do the water change so you're maybe right. Checked again this morning, still 24C, something has been changed. Shame though really, wasted money on a new heater, I suppose I've got a spare now though....

Right, took heater out, cleaned filter. replace heater and it's been @24C for at least 7 hours now. Not sure why, maybe the water wasn't moving free enough around the filter as said above?

I did a short test running it on suckers on the glass with the same result, however I suppose I should do a proper test over night in this way. Will keep this thread updated. Good suggestion btw!

  I tried it in hot water to test, although it moved, it doesn't prove the temperature. It's not reliable, but to put my hand in it is definately much colder than it was previously mate.   It's not the best method but it's all I can give you until I can get another thermometer.

For plants for beginners, just look in most aquarium shops mate. In my experience, they only tend to stock beginner plants, otherwise they usually state if it's not. I know i've read threads around her eon beginner plants but not got enough experience here to link mate! Try googling, I find a...
