What do you think of my 125G stock list?

I'm still working on my stock list for the new 125 I just bought. I'm hoping for suggestions and wondering about the possibility of cross breeding. Here's the proposed list to date. 5 labs 4 acei 4 albino socolofi 4 afra (cobue or jalo reef) 3 male peacocks 4 clown loaches 1 azureus 1...

    beautiful mystery mbuna

Can I get some help here. This fish was only $2.50. It was stunning so I bought it - and hoped for the best. What did I get? Sorry for the small pic. All I've got is a digital video camera.

    I made a mistake!

So I bought 6 baby (3/4") electric yellows for my newly fishless cycled 55G tank. After a few hours one of them started flipping out and then I remembered that I never did the 75% water change after cycling the tank. I did it as quick as a could but doing so required a big temperature drop (80...

    Eheim 2217 online manual?

Hello all. I haven't posted in a long time, but I just bought a used 2217 for $35. I way excited to use it on my mbuna tank, but I've only had HOB filters in the past. Does anyone know if there is a manual online that I can refer to as I set it up. Also, the media is old and grimy, in fact...

    Yoyo loaches changing color

While nitrates are not nearly as toxic as nitrites exposure to high levels can cause gill damage even to hardy species. They have been turning gray rather often over the last few days. The first time I noticed it one of them was being picked on, but now all three are turning gray with no...

    Rams and Angels

Hey Skipper, Angels and rams should be just fine together. I haven't had any problems with mine. They are some of my favorites. Angels don't do well with small tetras (they eat 'em) or fin nippers like danios.

    Yoyo loaches changing color

I think they are stressed, but I don't know why. They do have driftwood and rocks to hide in. They like foraging around quite a bit. They are very entertaining to watch. I changed the water several times last week to get my nitrates down. I wonder if they're still suffering from the effects of...

    Yoyo loaches changing color

Anyone with yoyo loaches seen this before? They look great one minute (shiny silver and dark black) and the next the look sickly (all washed out and drab gray). My nitrates were really high for a week or so, but they're about 30-40 now. I recently lost a couple of otos. I can only guess it was...

    goodbye little oto : (

It's not a pond, just a 37G planted tank. I've read in numerous places that pond tabs are good for planted tanks. Maybe I got a bad brand or just didn't plant them deep enough? The bioload isn't that big. I'm only feeding 1-2 times a day and just enough for 1-2 minutes of eating.

    goodbye little oto : (

I do water changes of 25% per week. After doing 30% changes four days in a row, my nitrates got down to 20, but two days later they were back up to 40. I think I overfertilized with pond tabs and it's leaking into the water. I have tons of live plants, but they're just now using up the nitrates...

I'll just have to go on this. I'm taking drastic measures to reduce them. I'll hope for the best! Thanks.

ph is 7.0. hardness is about 4 GH Nitrates were super high, but not for very long. They are at 40 now.

The tank is about 5 weeks old. I fishless cycled for 3 weeks. Ammonia and nitrites have been zero ever since.

    goodbye little oto : (

I just noticed my oto swimming funky last night. He kept rolling over and lying on his back. He was twitching all about. Within a couple of hours he was a goner. His belly was kind of red, but I didn't notice anything else. I've read some threads where similar things have happened to other's...

    HELP REDUCE NITRATES!

Are you adding a fertilizer to your plants? I have been battling nitrates too and my best guess is that it is the pond tabs that I put in. What do you guys think?

How far do your fish swim in a day?

I don't think my rasbora sleep, unless they sleepswim (like sleep walking). I've never seen them stop moving. Still I'll compromise with you. I'll do some more 1 minute observations at different times of the day. I still think they swim at least 5 miles a day. Another poster told me his...

How far do your fish swim in a day?

I've been amazed by my nonstop harlequin rasbora. The four of them zoom back and forth in the front of my tank all day long. I started to wonder how far they swim each day. They cross the 3 foot tank about 10 times every minute. 30 ft X 60 minutes = 1800ft/hr. 1800 X 24 hours = 43200ft/day...

    Help needed!

After performing some maintenance on my Whisper filter I put it back together and it will no longer bring the water up the tube. The impeller appears to be doing its job. The fan is spinning anyway. Do you have any recommendations or do I just need to replace it?

    fishless cycling

Once ammonia and nitrite are zero, you should do a 50 - 75% water change to reduce the nitrate level per this article. And as with any aquarium 10-30% water changes should be done weekly or biweekly to keep nitrate levels down.

    Nitrites won't go to zero

I started a fishless cycle on a 37G tank 10 days ago. I used media, plants, and decorations from an established 20G tank. The ammonia and nitrites both spiked and have leveled out, but not at zero. Nitrites are still about .5 and ammonia is about .25. I read an article about plants on...

    AC 500 or Emperor 400

I would like to get one of the two filters to go with a powerhead for my new tank. Which do you recommend? It seems the decision is between a higher flow rate versus getting additional filtration via the biowheel.

36 inch tank 80 watts of light

Cool website end parenthesis. Did you design it yourself? Thanks for the idea. That certainly sounds like the cheapest option. I'd would however, like to be able to fit the bulbs inside the hood so that it still looks nice. I don't have any electrical skills, but I'm wondering what it would...

    UGF's

Thanks for your responses guys. I just checked out Big Al's for the first time and was very encouraged by their prices. I think I will ditch the UGF. I don't want to go through all the hassel in a year or two. Do you think the AC 500 in combination with a powerhead would do the job for an mbuna...

    Reccomend me a cannister filter

    UGF's

I just bought a used 55G tank that came with an undergravel filter. I know they aren't recommended, but I can't justify spending another $50+ for a filter right now. If I understand correctly I just put power heads on the top of both tubes. Although this is a less than ideal filter what can I do...

    Malawi aquarium help

Wow, those saulosi are absolutely fascinating! Now the hunting from lfs to lfs begins. In the last paragraph of the link it says that labidochromis are good tankmates, but to avoid blue and yellow fish. Does that mean no to electric yellows?
