i've currently got a jewul rio 125 with twin interpet daylight 'bulbs', a sand substrate and live plants. the plants seemed to be doing okay with that and the natural sunlight that i get through my window but i had a bit of an mts problem (i've since cut back on feeding and been removing them...

afaik they need to be kept with larger numbers of balas so they take the aggression out on each other rather than the other tank mates, having said that mine's a timid as a kitten

you can, obviously their natural environment isn't argos play sand, but it certainly gives them the most benefit, my LFS was most pleased to hear that the 3 i was buying were going in a sandy tank and suggested that was the best possible substrate for them.

if you can change the substrate i also recommend corys, i made the change from gravel to sand on a 125ltr tank this week (specifically so i could keep corys in a safe an environment as possible) and it only took an hour or so at the cost of £5.80

i've got the exact tank and filter, it works really well, i wouldn't buy anything else for it :), the spray bar wont be to strong and if it is you can control the flow any way and as Shelagh has said, rubber band + stocking for the intake if you're worried.

been told that i'm not to rehome the gouramis, my mum says that's what they've known all their life, a link to the previous owner bla bla bla, she's normally not like that when it comes to animals, normally it's whats best for them that comes first so it's quite odd for her to have taken this...

the gouramis do fight a bit but the bala just follows the around the tank (thinks he's another gourami), i guess they're play fighting went a bit to far this time?

not so good news today :( i've just noticed that one of the gouramis fins (side of it's body, i don't know the proper name for it) has split twice (as far as i can tell down to where it meets the body) what the heck could have happened? it doesn't look like any kind of disease i've seen...

just thought i'd mention that i've removed the horrible under gravel filter rubbish and switched from gravel to sand, looks much nicer :)

no problem mate, yes both pipes will fit through the same corner, i put it in an established tank but ran it along side the existing filter/s for about 3 weeks before removing the internal ones (this was to build up bacteria in the new filter media). syphoning manually would mean sucking water...

i've got a ex700 and a juwel rio 125, the pipes fit fine, the spraybar is to agitate the water surface so it can diffuse oxygen in to the water, i have no idea if it will fit the cabinet but it should, i don't have the specific juwel cabinet for the rio 125 another thing i can say for the ex700...

yeah, we don't get 'adverse'* weather very often in the UK, my tanks up 3 degrees (centigrade) and i'm not sure who feels worse, me or the fish! you'd have to be very well off or in a really modern house (much the same) to have in home AC over here and anything you can buy for a 'reasonable'...

well, they're all still alive, i think it may be the heat, cos they're acting how i feel and the tank is 1-2 degrees hotter than normal. my EX700 turned up, looks much more understated in the tank and frees up a lot of wasted space inside the tank for extra swimming room, silent as well!

hmmm, think one of my gourami may be on the way out. he's been sitting on the bottom for hours at a time the last 2 days, something very unusual. seems a bit duller as well and doesn't eat much (or as much as the other one) he was sitting on the gravel at an angle about 30 minutes ago and didn't...

thanks. what stats would show it's time to change? does the amount of nitrates matter so much as the ammonia? think i'm about to put something up in the MM to move on the gouramis, the little one is pestering the bigger one quite a lot, chasing him round the tank and trying to do their whole...

didn't check the water yesterday, was to tired after my nightshift and i knew if i checked it and it wasn't good i'd feel compelled to change the water (ignorance = bliss), checked it this morning though; ammo 0-.25 ni 0 na 40-80 just finished qa 50% water change. too bloody hot down here :-(

thanks mate :), i knew about tetras needing a mature tank. i think my plan at the moment is to look at re-housing the gouramis while adding the corys. then re-house the bala and get the pearls, and then add tetras 5 or so at a time. leaving a couple of weeks-a month between each new addition...

yup, it reads 7.6 on the normal test because that's the highest the scale goes. whereas the high range starts from 7.6, my water is the same :)
