i have had both in the past, i prefer gravel now as i can clean the gravel and change the water at the same time. with sand i was cleaning the gravel with an air vacuum cleaner, then use the normal gravel cleaner to siphon the water out. i didnt like just using the gravel cleaner as i found it...

ive just had to set one up for use immediately, i used water from the main tank and new water (about 50:50 split) i also used a couple of sponges out of the main tank's filter in the new tank so its up and running straight away
