    Determining a Bettas Value

Thanks :) I'm looking at getting a Black CT male, and a steel blue CT female for breeding... But I'm not sure if this is a good colour combination or not :dunno: Any ideas?? I'm hoping to see a pic of the fish so I can see what they are like :)

    Breeding Bettas

Thats a shame :( Probably not a good idea to leave them overnight or anything... I heard a story from someone who left them overnight and the male hurt the female because he got sick of her presence (they mated in the night). Cheers, Marty.

    My betta is gone!!!!

Well, it probably wasn't a good idea to keep the male and the female together like that... It seems that he might have killed her, or she just died, and the other fish ate her?? Seems the only rational explanation to me :( Marty.

    Determining a Bettas Value

Thanks for the bump Synastic :) Well, I'm really just looking to buy a nice CT pair for breeding. If I'm faced with a picture of the fish, and the person says righto, $40 please, then how do I know I'm not being ripped off? That's really what I meant. Cheers, Marty :)

    Breeding Bettas

The female has to be ready as well as the male... Was she baring up? She might not want to breed yet. You should also condition her using live and frozen foods. Cheers, Marty.

    Determining a Bettas Value

Hi all, Does anyone have any tips, or links about determining the value of a fish? (namely bettas). I know that good finnage, clean colouration without red wash is good etc. But what other things should I look out for? I'm particularly interested in CT's :) Cheers, Marty. P.S. I'm a first...

    Betta's in Oz

Hi there, I'm from Australia to, and I'm afraid that finding bettas here won't be easy for you, breeders aren't that common. I've sent you a PM, so check it for more details :) Cheers, Marty.

Nice Live Plants for my Bettas

Hi all, Can anyone make any suggestions as to which live plants would work best with my bettas?? They need to be hardy, and ones that won't require much looking after, because to start with I'm really wanting to learn about keeping the fish... Also, they need to look nice because the tank is...

    Alternative to Cycling?

Cool! Nice to see a fellow countryman :) I actually saw the crimson spotted rainbows in a book just yesterday, and they look beautiful. How hard are they to keep? I may well get some in the future when I can afford another tank :)

    Alternative to Cycling?

100 Australian dollars. Right now that's probably approx 70-80 US. Genuine Thai bettas are being improted soon for $400 each!!!! LOL. It's like that because you can't import fish to Australia without a license or a quarantine setup. Costs heaps. Marty.

    Betta Spawning Tank

What do they do exactly?? I've seen them, and know that they assist with keeping a tank clean, but not sure of their exact function... Marty. Edit: Something else I found that looks interesting. Algae Magnets... What the??

    Alternative to Cycling?

That means I get my tank just in time for the holidays, and can't even put fish in it until the holidays are over! :-( Poop. Oh well, it will be worth the wait. Besides I don't want to pay over a hundred bucks for a lovely pair of bettas and then kill them...

    Alternative to Cycling?

So the balls are likely to remove all the ammonia, and therefore bacteria can't grow? Or is it only likely to lower the levels... Looks like I'll just have to cycle *sigh*

    pH of Water

Hi all, I heard that bettas prefer a pH of 7.2, give or take .2. Now, I got out the pH testing kit and had a look at the tap water in our place. It turns out that our water has a pH of 7.8 - is this to high for my bettas? Thanks, Marty.

But if you remove the male, then what happens to the falling eggs? I never knew this was possible.

    Betta Spawning Tank

Silly me... Your right. There is no gravel in my spawn tank lol. Is a sponge filter my only option then??

    Heater Reccomendations

I dunno if we even need heaters now that you mention it. I think we probably do for spawning tanks, but for general stuff the water temp would be about 25C, maybe more depending on the weather. I got thinking about it the other night... I believe you mean a billabong... I don't know if those...

    Alternative to Cycling?

I found these http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/prod400.htm and thought that all my Christmases has come at once (buying fish and tank soon, but really don't want to cycle). However, I got a little skeptical, and decided I would ask some of the experts out there what they think of them. So...

    Betta Spawning Tank

Your a champ! I was just going to ask what the heck these were. Anyway, it looks like you've got the job of explaining to me :P I know people say not to bother with UV sterilisers blah blah, but are they likely to harm my fry?

    Heater Reccomendations

So long as it won't disturb the surface or suck in the tiny fry then I'm all for it :) Thanks for the advice.

    Betta Spawning Tank

Hi all, I had a friend tell me that if I chucked snails in my tank they can sometimes help to keep it clean. Firstly, is that true? And secondly, would the bettas mind if there were snails in their spawning tank, or would the snails eat the eggs? Right now I'm really wanting to keep my betta...

    Heater Reccomendations

LOL! I think you mean central cooling! Austrlian summers ain't cool I'm afraid :/ Sang, thanks forr all your help. The reason I was originally asking after a sponge filter is because this is for a betta spawning tank, and they say that sponge filters are the best. What d'you think? I'll have...

    Betta Foods

Another thing... This isn't exactly the ideal place to ask, but I thought some people who read this might know. Are these exotic breeds of bettas just as hardy as your everyday $8 pet shop ones?? Or will they be a little more fragile? I'm assuming it depends on the strain...

    Betta Foods

Thanks again :) I think I might just get a variety of cultures, and work off the reccomendations I have recieved. I've heard bad reports about baby brine shrimp... Might avoid them just in case. Cheers, Marty.

    Buying Bettas

Yea, I just realised that Wasans site was different :) Thanks for all your help. There is a prob still, the person whom imports bettas into Aussie is charging $400 per fish!!!! Talk about a profit :/ Edit: That's 400 per fish of Wasans... He is selling others for about $150.

    Heater Reccomendations

Oh, and just to be on the safe side I should ask wether I can just plop the sponge filter in the tank as is, or wether I need any other form of hardware to make it work? Thanks, Marty.

    Heater Reccomendations

Thanks for that Great Lakes. Much appreciated. I'll follow your advice. I'm not sure of the exact size myself... I think 2ft long, 1ft tall, no idea how deep lol. I'm picking it up from my friend next week.

Keeping a Tank Clean for Longer

Thanks. I was actually planning on getting some fake plants until I heard that  I also heard that snails are good. What are they like in a tank with bettas?? As far as hardware goes, there is a stack of stuff out there, and I don't even know what it does :/ My main concern is that I...

    Heater Reccomendations

Hi all, Looking for a nice heater that will do my 2ft tank that was given to me by a friend. I really want to know what whattage I would need, and which are the best brands for bang/buck. Also, are the water capacity ratings on sponge filters a good guide? I thought I heard somewhere that you...

Keeping a Tank Clean for Longer

Besides doing water changes, srubbing sides etc. (oh, and filters). Anyone got any ideas? I've heard about, and looked at UV Sterilisers, which seem to be most common for salt water tanks - mine is fresh water. They look to be a good investment. I'm trying to find some things like this that...

I know some people don't like the idea of this, but you should order some in from breeders, over the internet. That way you can have lots of babies :D
