From my experience Serpae and Tiger Barbs are semi aggressive. The older they are the more aggressive. The tiger barbs seem to be faster than the Serpae were. I wonder if zebra danios would work for they are very fast swimmers and very cheap.

Take it out and spray it with Flourish excel and then rub the stuff off. Have read that they tend to get algae, which is what it has, in bright lit places.

Looks like an algae problem. Have you tried Flourish excel? It adds carbon to the tank and kills many types of algae.

If you get rid of the media and substrate you have to recycle the tank. The problem will come back if you don't correct the imbalance. A picture would help to see what deficiencies there are I would soak the filter media in some water with some excel. Just take the top layer of gravel off...

I was once told that if I put wood in my tank to add an algae eater, the 1s that get 5". For they eat the rotting wood.

I was concerned about my nitrates being below 10. Posted a thread about it at another forum and found that nitrates become low when the plants use all that there is of nitrates in the tank.

They are not the same. Flourish excel will probably kill the algae. It kills a lot of variety of algae even though that is not what is sold for. You still need to get the nutrients balanced or it will come back. I think CSM+B would help.

Andy it is true. My vals were melting until I stopped using flourish excel. Now in place of it I use hydro peroxide. This is just a temporary replacement until I get diy Co2 set up. The plants seemed to be growing really great in January. Thus I don't understand why the thread?

I have read that for the sake of the fish some surface turbulence is needed when you inject Co2. There is more than 1 way to create surface turbulence. I use a powerhead.

There is some mesh that is used to filter florescent lights that might work, which I have seen at Home Depot or Lowe's. I can't remember which 1. Also you could use some wire mesh.
