    Dirt Sub-Substrate

Thanks for all of your help Byron,   I was mostly hoping that the EI powders could be mixed to the Flourish formula, I don't plan on using the EI method. I will pick up some flourish tonight perhaps. I will look for some more and larger driftwood tonight as well with my plants. Thanks again.

    Dirt Sub-Substrate

Thanks for your advice Byron.   I ended up going with an all sand substrate and set up the tank over the weekend. There are only 2 java fern, and a very small amazon sword in the tank right now. Going to try to go to the store tonight and pick up a few more as the tank is looking a bit barren...

    Dirt Sub-Substrate

Gorgeous tanks! Thanks for the advice all I think I will just use my sand when moving over. I believe I still have powders from days when I dabbled in the ei method so I will try to drum those up. Is 1-2 inches an appropriate amount of sand? Byron, do you add co2 to Your tanks or just light...

    Dirt Sub-Substrate

Hey all,   After 8 glorious years my oscar has died (he will be given a viking funeral) and I am going to be moving my fish from my 40 gallon tank to the 75 gallon. My current plan is to put down a layer (1/2 - 1") of dirt and another 1/2 - 2" of playsand on top of it. Currently in the 40 gal I...

    A 40 Gallon Journey

Hey all, Just poking my head in for a second. Everyone is doing well and starting to get big. All the fish are getting along fairly well and the plants have almost completely shed their original leaves to make room for the young growth. I have however noticed, aside from the hoplos, everyone...

    Food Differentiation

Hello all, I have been wondering lately what the differences are between staple food exactly. I was at the store recently looking at the ingredient list and they read identically. I will point out that I was looking at two of foods by Tetra (Tetra Min and Tetra Color enhancer). I wasn't exactly...

    New Canister Filter

Hey all, I just purchased a Marineland C-220 (I have read they're the same a Tetra Tec) for my 40 gallon tank. The filter on the tank (Aqua Clear 70) has been running now for a few years, but I fear it might be on its last leg and its getting pretty loud. Long story short, I decided to invest...

    A 40 Gallon Journey

Thought I would stop in for a quick update. I have ordered a Marineland C-220 canister filter for the tank (as it doesn't look like my aquaclear is going to last a lot longer :/) which should arrive tomo! Everyone is doing well and getting bigger, however I put in a powerhead a few weeks back...

Also, I have a powerhead that I used to use on my old 75g with an UGF. Would the fish enjoy the extra water movement? I would probably put it so it give side to side flow. My filter is an Aquaclear70 which claims to put out 300 gph (My philosophy with filters is to buy the model rated at the...

    A 40 Gallon Journey

Thanks Reverend, The cats all seem to be doing great, they are a lot of fun to watch. I'm very happy that I changed to the sand substrate, they love it. And its fun watching the rooster tails when they fly from one end to the other. I'll try to get some pictures up this weekend. I did notice...

Cool thanks guys. Minnnt, I only feed Bloodworms once a week (on Sunday). Tuesday and Thursday I give them Brine Shrimp. The rest of the week they get Omega One Freshwater Flake or Cichlid flake. Should I only give them Brine Shrimp once a week? Also, For your request Minnnt I took some...

    A 40 Gallon Journey

Hello again, I thought I would give another update and, as usual, ask another question. Over the weekend I gave my tank it's first proper waterchange with the sand substrate. I haven't done this in the past but it seemed nearly impossible to vaccuum the poop/uneaten food without also sucking in...

    Jack Dempsey Fry Logging

I wonder if their behavior is due to the water? You said it needs a waterchange, correct? But youre post poning it because obviously do not want to suck up the fry. Can you put a fish net on the syphon and just take water out for now? That way you can put in new water and not worry about...

    Pike I.d.

I'm not an expert by an stretch, but after a bit of google researching I am tempted to agree with bonzo. They seem to have the same solid stripe and well as the slight red coloring as the Crenicichla johanna seem to. Again tho, not an expert.

    Blue Acara Under Heater?

Hey guys, I'm not sure if I should be concerned or if I just don't recall how new fish work? Anyway, long story short, my baby Blue Acara (just got him a week ago, may be 1 1/4") seems to be hiding under his heater. He is housed with 10 bleeding heart tetras who are all content with swimming...

    A 40 Gallon Journey

Thanks for the compliment guys, I must say I really enjoy having the sand bed over the gravel. I may begin to use it in my other tanks as new setups occur. Everyone seems to be pretty happy, the Blue Acara is swimming around more, tho he still spends a good amount of time under/behind the trees...

    Oscars

My Oscar (bashful) broke his heater early this summer, luckily I was home and in my room when he did it so I was able to unplug and remove it before it kicked on. Haven't gotten him a new one yet as the summer has been very hot but will need to soon as winter approaches.

    A 40 Gallon Journey

From a quick search it does look to be Mopani wood. I'm glad to hear it is harmless :) thanks warrior. Picked up some sand today, got a 50 lb bag as well as ~25 lb from left over sand from our fire pit that I'll mix with it. The 50 lb bag seemed small, which is why I think I need the extra sand.

Will do reverend, I was using it to try to create as big of caves as I could whole being able to stack. I think this weekend will be a restructuring time. I'll pick up some sand today (50 lb bag) and try to get it washed between now and Sat, and look around for plants. On a side note my fish...

    A 40 Gallon Journey

Good stuff, I looked into converting to sand and it doesn't seem terribly difficult so I think I may go that route. will I need to add some fertilizer for the plants that will be going in the sand? And how long can I expect to keep plants before the acara decides to shred them? If its a while...
