    Problem With Fishless Cycle

Hello scouse_andy. The very same thing happened to me directly after the water change in my fishless cycle. Unfortunately for me though i bought fish just after changing the water ( i didnt test it - just figured the bacteria wouldnt die in that short amount of time). I wouldnt get too...

    Harlequins, Guppies, Corys

Hiya. I know someone who is trying to get rid of one of his tanks (he has about 4) and needs a home for a group of guppies. I just wondered if guppies would get on ok with my harlequins and corys (when i get them). Although i havnt seen them the bloke reckons they are about an inch long. My...

    How To Convert ('c - 'f)

You could cut out the middle part by just multiplying by 1.8. e.g. °F = ( °C × 1.8 ) + 32 I can understand that the way you show it would be a heck of a lot easier to do without a calculator though. Good for a quick in your head calculation.

    My Choice Of Fish

Just an update. I went to LFS and I got the Harlequins (6 of them). The bloke who served me wouldn't let me have any more fish - plus i couldnt find any Panda corys or sparkling gouramies. He'd never heard of doing a fishless cycle by adding ammonia, and he reccommened changing the water...

    New Fish

I shall be doing the daily 20% water change. Thanks for the advice. Is amazing how i maneaged to kill my bacteria off that easily though! I didnt even take the media out of the plastic holders, i just kind of shook them in the water. On a good note, all my fish are still alive, and look...

    New Fish

OK heres my dissapointing test results for this morning. I think somehow my nitritre eating bacteria has died as its not moved: Amonia 0 Nitrite 4.5-5 Nitrate 40-50 I think i may need to cycle my tank again, but this time WITH fish. How annoying! Frost

    New Fish

At least 5ppm was added every day, but at some points when i was going away for 2 days i'd put in 50 drops instead of the 35(for 5ppm) probably making it to around 7-8ppm. It seemed the bacteria was perfect until i changed the water. It could remove 5ppm ammonia from the water in about 4 hours...

    New Fish

Yes, i have an internal filter. So when i did my water change i siphoned some water out into a bucket and put all my filter media in that while i did the rest of my 90% water change. The media would have been in the bucket for around 30-40mins maximum and in that time I did actually remove...

    New Fish

I did add more ammonia after my water change as suggested in one of my other posts, but only up to what should have been 2.5ppm (15drops) (35 normally takes it to 4.5-5ppm). I've just done a test again and its looking dire! Ammonia 0 Nitrite 5 (could be off the chart) Nitrate 40-60ish What...

    New Fish

Yep, fully dechlorinated all my water. Just left my fish into the tank, they seem to be swimming round in a shoal but all squashed up into one corner of my tank. I'm hoping that when i test the water again later on tonight i'll get better readings. Thanks for replying.

It has been fully cycled for over a week. Do you mean i should have waited a week after my water change?

    New Fish

Hello. Just been to my LFS to get my fish because my tank is fully cycled (been processing 5ppm of amonia to 0ammonia and nitrite in about 4 hours). Before i went to the fish store i did a 90% water change to get rid of my 40ppm nitrates, ive just got back after buying my fish and it appears...

    My Choice Of Fish

Sounds good, do you mean buy 3/4 first and let them settle - then buy some more at a later date? Or do you mean i could get more in the first place? Are all the numbers for my fish about right? Or should i have more/less of any? Cheers

    My Choice Of Fish

Hello. After yesterdays post ive done some more searching and come up with 3 different kinds of fish i'd like to keep together. My tank is 18UK gallons and is fully cycled (fishless method). Panda Cories - 3/4? Harlequins - 5+? Sparkling Gouramies - 4/5? What do you think? Are they going to...

    Finished Cycle

Now theres an idea! I shall do that. Back to the fish choosing side of the post. It seems i've not got a very good idea about the fish - neons being hard to keep in a new tank, and guppies going at it like rabbits. I'll check some other posts and try and compile a list of fish i...

    Finished Cycle

I have a feeling its going to take me a good couple of hours. I'll be using a bucket and adding dechlorinator to cold tap water. Wont i need to heat the buckets of water up a bit to make sure i dont kill my bacteria from extreme cold?

    Yet Another Cycling Question

your tank is about the same size as mine, maybe 2 gallons smaller. When i first started my fishless cycle i completely messed it up by trying to add the pure amonia in mililitres. I put about 5ml in and it ended up that when i tested my amonia with the api master kit the test tube almost went...

    Finished Cycle

Good day. After two and a half weeks my fishless cycle has finished. I'm now ready to get myself some little fish to go in my tank. My tank is 18uk gallons so I dont really want anything much bigger than 2.5 inches in length, 3 inches max. I've had a quick read and it seems i'd benefit from...

    Brown Algae While Cycling

Whats strange, i've been cycling for nearly 3 weeks and just coming to the end of my cycle. I've not seen any algae at all, not even a slight tinge on green anywhere. Should i be seeing algae? Got me worried i'm doing my cycle wrong now. (sorry for hi-jacking your post Paulkat)

    Water Test Result Today

I'm also in the 3rd week of cycling, so maybe comparing tests could help? mine are: Ammonia was 0ppm Nitrite was 4ppm (But just did a test this morning to find they are now 0.5 (within 12 hours they went from 4ppm to 0.5ppm) Nitrate was 30ppm (our tap water is 0) I'm guessing you just need to...

    Keeping A Stable Temperature

    Keeping A Stable Temperature

Good morning. If you remember, i started cycling my tank about 2 weeks ago and i think its getting close to finishing now  . The problem is, over the cycling period i've found it near impossible to keep a steady temperature. Heres my temps from my cycle so far: 95 98.6 86 84.2...

    Ammonia In Uk

I had huge problems finding mine! I wen't to the biggest Tesco (grocery store) in the whole of England and couldnt find any, went to boots, went to homebase, B+Q, Do it All and some other small stores with cleaning sections and I found nothing like what i needed. I ended up doing the same as...

    Very High Ph While Cycling

Ahhh okay. Thanks! I'll not worry about my pH until my cycling is finished. If it's still dodgey after my cycle then ill have to take some of the suggested actions. Thanks for your time folks, i really appreciate it. Frost

    Very High Ph While Cycling

Nope, just sand and the water at the moment. That link you showed me is quite interesting. In only of my very first posts on the forums I mentioned that my dad has a reverse osmosis filter in the garage which he has running all the time for his marine tank. I asked you fish experts on here...

    Very High Ph While Cycling

Good Morning After the trouble i had with adding far too much amonia at the start of my cycle, i've finally got it started and i've built up some ammonia hungry bactera  . I've been to lazy to do any other tests. Up until now ive only been measuring amonia to see if its starting to...

    Frost's Cycling Chart

Hello. I've noticed that a large percentage of posts in the "New to the hobby" section are to do with cycling a tank. Also ive noticed that trying to interpret peoples test results for ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH etc etc... can be quite difficult when they are always shown in different ways...

    Fishless Cycle...erm Oops!

Seems like ive done about 150% water change just to get it to about 7-8ppm. I took 50% out, the refilled back to full. Tested - still over 8ppm. took another 50% out and refilled back to full. Testes - still over 8ppm took abouter 50% out and refilled back to full and the reading is roughly...

    Fishless Cycle...erm Oops!

Thanks a lot for the help folks. I've had a nightmare this evening trying to get this Cycle started. I've been swapping water in and out of the tank over and over and over again to try and get a half decent reading with the test kit (must have done about 10 Amonia tests!). I think at last the...

    Fishless Cycle...erm Oops!

Hello. Okay, so i filled my tank with water, got it to 80-85'f and got my filter and airpump working. The come the part to add the amonia. Well. I didnt have a dropper, so i used a medicine measurer to add amonia to my tank, I started with 2.5ml of Jeyes Amonia stuff. And then did an API...

Newbie - New Tank - Please Check

Sorry for the slow reply. I brought a test kit but it doesnt have a water hardness testing bottle. Im not sure how to test it for hardness, but i think ive heard the water round here is fairly hard. Im thinking of keeping guppies as a first attempt.
