JEWELLERS ROUGE is very good for removing scratches on watch faces (even Rolex crystal faces)... costs about £12.00 a jar,use a small amount and in a circular motion... did hear though that on fish tanks when trying to remove scratches it can weaken the glass,others will know about that i guess...

thats good to hear i'm not the only one then.... what i tend to do is exactly the same as yourself,then when it does start "gurgling",just lift the lever again,remove the pipes for a second,put them back on,close the lever back down into place,and this cures the problem for me HTH
