    Overly Prego Platty...

It isn't easy to see her in this picture.. But I have a mature platty that I think is having some problems. She is so bloated that you can see skin between her scales and she is very lazy and won't swim around. She has the white spot by her anal fin so I'm guessing the bloating is a massive...

Orange Mollie - White Spots, Sickness?

Hey everyone, I have a orange mollie that has recently developed a bunch of white spots on it. I have changed the bulb (florescent) in the past few weeks, could that be the cause? Or is this some illness? Thanks! Edit: I just did a Nitrite/Nitrate test on the tank before/after a partial...

    Strange Behavior

Trust me, they do not get hungry! I learned that the best way to get fry to survive, without me getting involved, was keeping the adults well fed. As a result of this they have fry on a more regular basis, and more often. Thanks for the insite, I did not know that! I thought they would eat...

    Strange Behavior

I have a 20 USG Long tank, and I have a divider in it about 8 inches from the left hand side for raising fry. The only things in the tank are mollies (common and lyretail) some snails and a ghost shrimp. My divider works great because when a fish has fry a few always manage to sneak past the...

Mollies And Guppies, What All Is Compatable?

Hello all! I have a 3 Mollies (as some of you know,) 2 females and 1 male. I have salted the tank per a few or your suggestions (which worked GREAT.) Now that I have been testing and seeing that my tank is now stable and cycled, I want to get a few guppies. Like I said, I have salt in the...

    Dead

Ouch, sorry to see you go! Never did find out what happened huh?

    Odd One Out.

What actually happened is: Soon after birth, the whole group of fry were talking about modern American politics, when one (the loner) baby fry tried using a joke to hook up with shelia, the cutest fry of them all. The joke was: What do you get from a bad-tempered shark? As far away as...

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

An update for everyone: The PH balanced off right around 8.1 after the salt addition. I'm not sure if the salt actually did the changing of the PH or not. So, to get the PH back down a little (8.0 being the highest recomended I have ever heard for Mollies) I purchased a bottle of 'PH Down.'...

    Mollie Breeding Tips

I agree with you here. I have had a pregnant molly abort in a trap before. Small breeding tanks in the area of 10 gallons seem to work great, and by far the best choice if you will be selling the fry. Look into an automatic feeder, they are amazing for fry because you do not need to be...

    Clay Pots

Wow that is an awesome tip. Thanks

    Clay Pots

Hello, I have seen online that people use the generic little clay pots (ussualy used for flowers of course) as hiding spots in tanks. Does this let off anything in the water that would not be good for fish? I don't think it would because some substrates already contain clay, but hey, you guys...

    Extra Fry

Hello everyone Thank you to those who have helped me in the past I was wondering, out of all of you who post here, if any of you live close to the Wisconsin area I am looking for fry from good parents. The gene pool around here (as far as fish are concerned ;) ) is a little diluted. Let me...

    Mollie Breeding Tips

When I was at a pet shop near my home town some time ago, the fish pro there said that to get them to breed, make sure you have some salt in the tank. He said that this fools them to think it is spring (when rain is washing salt into the tank) and thus coaxes them to breed. Hope it helps! ;)

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

Funny, mine freak out when I feed them. They actually see me in front of the tank getting the food container and come to attention, and attack the sinking pellet on the way down. They both suck on it until it is gone, every time. But if I notice that they are not fully eating it I will switch...

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

I stopped all of that. The two Mollies are now being fed one sinking pellet a day. They both suck on it for about 5 minutes before it is gone, works perfect. They seem happy now that the salt has been added! It dropped the PH to 7.9, so far.

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

Yep I tried. Everyone until this forum was saying that salt was a nice aditive, not really a strong point of keeping them alive. I tested the PH of the tap water, it is at 7.4. So, I will swing over and hit up Animart today to grab some marine salt. I will keep the thread posted as to what...

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

My master test kit said that the max that the PH should be for Mollies is 7.8 - and said that the easiest way to drop the PH is to use PHDrop (which the same company also makes..) I know most people frown upon using any chemicals in the tank, so I don't know anyone will agree with this one...

    My Platies Are Not Pregnant

Don't do this yet because it may not apply to platties but when I wanted to get Mollies going the guy at the pet store said that putting a small amount of salt in the water simulated spring time in the wild, and thus coaxes them to breed. For anyone who knows - Do you put salt in with the...

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

Alright everyone, I have a picture of my tank. It looks really messy, and it is, but thats because some water ran down the front today when I was testing it. The bubble tube (bubble wall) is behind the plants/rocks. Yes, yes I am working on getting more stuff in there!

    Snails?

I tried this last night and it resulted in not a single snail being removed this morning. No idea what I did wrong :(

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

Ok, I tested the water - PH = 8.2 High.. Amonia = 0-.25 PPM (It was right in between...) Nitrite = 0 PPM (NO misread there, that baby was super light blue) Nitrate = 20 PPM Any suggestions about that PH (try to think of home remidies, the test kit was expensive!) Thanks!

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

Thanks starrynightxxi! I had planned upon leaving the tank sit for a few weeks before adding anything living next time, and it looks like that is right. I do wonder however, what is the ideal hardness, nytrate, and PH for Mollies? I know the PH should be in the ballpark of the 7.5 range, and...

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

I have allot of things that I plan to test and try. 1. Clown Loaches to help control the snail life. Even if this has nothing to do with the actual problem, it will give me peice of mind. 2. Testing the water. 3. Maybe bringing down the whole tank. 4. Using distilled water About number 4...

    Snails?

What about after the Loaches kill all of the snails? What else do they eat? I'm worried about this because they are kinda cool looken and I don't want them just dying. ;)

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

The forums said 'overnight.' So, I am taking that as 12 hours. I will let you know how that one goes. About 5 have passed now and still no takers that I can see from here. The only reason I say the snails might have a part in this is the fact that I have seen the Mollies picking at the eggs...

Frequent Molly Deaths, What Is Happening?

I have a 20L tank with a submersible pump, a submersible heater, a 10 inch air stone connected to a Whisper20 pump, and a 30 inch light. I had the tank up, and at 75 F for about a week before I dropped in 6 Mollies, 3 black, 3 white. They lived very happy and it turned out that one was...

New To The Hobby, Trying To Breed Mollies :d

I have just gotten back into fresh water fish! I have always wanted to get a breeding tank running. I choose Mollies because they have been described as some serious breeders. I picked up: 20 gallon long All-Glass aquarium Submersible, rechargable filter pump 10 inch air stone Whisper air...
