18x18x18" Equipmentless Cube - Now Planted Tropical

Well he's eating well and does sometimes come out of his hiding place during the day. Is still shy though, but he's out a lot more than I expected.

Co2 Kit Recommendations Please - A Little New To This!

I'm looking at adding CO2 to my 18x18x18" cube. My tank runs an external filter few by two bulkheads in the base of the tank so the CO2 must be added to the 12mm hose that runs from the filter back to the tank, so I guess I will need a reactor. I do want to go down the compressed cylinger...

Yeah I've got no plans to get a female. I've never had a problem before keeping a betta and cardinals in the same tank.

18x18x18" Equipmentless Cube - Now Planted Tropical

The Camera is a Canon EOD350D. There is no lid and yes there is always a risk of fish jumping. And the water level is about 1mm from the top of the glass, it really is full to the brim! But when it was setup as a marine tank nothing jumped out and in my experience marine fish tend to be more...

Thanks Brette, Stocking wise I'm not going to add any more, at least not for the moment. And if I do it will be just one more small fish, but like I say I have no plans to add anything else. Water quality wise I'm going to be using RO water and 'Tropic Marin Re-Mineral Tropic', so it will be...

    5,200k 150w Metal Halide?

I already have the light fitting though, so cost wise it would just be about £35 for the 5,200k bulb and the cost of CO2 (which I plan on adding anyway).

Well my Betta has started making a bubble nest

    5,200k 150w Metal Halide?

Sinice I have a 150W Arcadia Mini Pendant from when my tank was setup as a marine tank, would a 5,200k 150W Halide be too much light for an 80 litre 18" cube (22 US gallons)? I know it will be on the bright side and I will clearly need CO2, but would it just be too much? Thanks in advance :good:

Well today I added 10 Cardinal Tetras and a Queen Arabesque Pleco (L-260). All settled in fine.

18x18x18" Equipmentless Cube - Now Planted Tropical

It didn't seem to bother the marine fish, and I cant say the Betta looks bothered at all. That said, I would not keep Discus in the tank for this reason (and that at 19 gallons it's too small for discus!)

18x18x18" Equipmentless Cube - Now Planted Tropical

Thanks for that. There are no plastic plants. I think your right about the red and green leaved grass like plant being non aquatic. I'll see how it goes, but if it looks like it's not doing well I'll tank it out. The tank is going to mature and change over time though. Fish wise it's going...

Substrate? Innert black sand (looks alot like black glass close up) Size? 18x18x18 inches (45x45x45cm) Plants? No idea  maybe someone could id them. Lighting? Period? Arcadia Luminaire 2x14w T8. I expect I will get a 70W Arcadia hetal halide in time though. Will be on for 5 hours...

18x18x18" Equipmentless Cube - Now Planted Tropical

Well following on from my tank crash about a month ago, I've converted the tank to tropical. I just didn't have the heart to set it up again as marine, and being some what of a perfectionist I knew as a marine tank it would have to have been even better than before. I'm not sure that's...

    To Much, Too Little Lighting

I have to admit I'm a bit of a planted tank virgin! But I would like some bogwood with Java Moss growing on it and a couple of small leaved species growing in the midground and something like Marsilea quadrifolia growing in the foreground. Still playing with ideas though.

So at 1.4 wpg the Arcadia Overtank Luminaire with Twin T8 14w tubes should be about right? Just want to be sure before ordering one tomorrow.

    Using Ro Water In Tropical?

So is RO too pure to use on it's own? Is it best to mix it with tap water and if so in what proportions. Or can you buy an additive to add to pure RO water to make it perfect for fish such as cardinal tetras?

I'll scrub the female bettas then. I've kept a male betta with cardinal tetras before with no problems.

    Using Ro Water In Tropical?

As I'm switching my tank from marine to freshwater tropical, I have a RO unit. Is the use of RO water recommended? I would expect it's too pure to use on it's own, so can it be safely used in say a 80% RO/20% tap water mix etc?

Anyone? I've worked out that the Arcadia Overtank Luminaire with Twin T8 14w tubes would give me about the same WPG as most of the standard Juwel tanks.

    To Much, Too Little Lighting

After a tank crash in my marine 18x18x18" (about 19 imperial gallons) cube I've decided to convert it to tropical. I want the tank to be planted but would rather not go down the CO2 route. Due to the design of the tank a hanging pendant is a MUST. I've currently got a 14,000K 150W Arcadia...

70w Halide Lamp In A 150w Arcadia Mini Pendant?

Can you put a smaller lamp in a metal halide lamp into a bigger unit? I would like to put a Arcadia Freshwater 70W 5,200K into an Arcadia 150W series 3 pendant. Will it work or go bang?

    Refugium Lights

They can be turned on 24/7 but alot of people run them on the reverse cycle to the main tank lights (so the refugium light comes on when the tank light goes off and vice versa). This will help stableise PH and give the macroalgae in the fuge some down time. I've seen the Arcadia Arc-Pod and...

Do I Really Need A Skimmer

It needs to be connected to a mains water pipe (they normaly come with a clamp type connection thats REALLY easy to install) with a 1/4 inch flexable plastic pipe. The mains water pressure will push water through the RO unit, you have two pipes coming out of the RO unit, one is waste water, the...

Do I Really Need A Skimmer

IMO a RO unit is a must for marine. Firstly it's kinder to the fish as while they will tolerate nirtates etc, they dont like it. Secondly if you use tap water you will have big problems with algae. You dont have to remove the Juwel filter, just dont use it for biological filtration - let...

Do I Really Need A Skimmer

thats a good bet. You should only need 30kg of live rock and add to that a skimmer.
  38. J

Do I Really Need A Skimmer

I would remove the Juwel filter, and only use the Eheim for mechanical and chemical filtration. You want your live rock to do all your biological filtration. You dont need a skimmer. I'm running my 100 litre reef with JUST liverock for filtration and weekly 15%-20% waterchanges. Just be...
