    ammonia levels ...

lonelyneon The pinned post by Alien Anna talks all about cycling new tanks. However, in summary a tank works by converting Ammonia (waste) into NitrItes and then into NitrAtes by bacterial reaction. These bacteria aren't there when you start so after a few days so there is nothing to eat the...

    What is your opinion on....

Glad you asked Mike, I posted a question before the crash about changing from gravel to sand, and lost the post. I've got gravel tanks, my in-laws two sand and one gravel - the sand one's look far better and cleaner and they haven't had any problems with filters, colonisation of bacteria, dead...

    My guppy died after birth

I've had mixed results with pregnant mothers after they've given birth. I had three but two died quite soon after giving birth (one caught a serious case of Ick) and I've also presumed that the stress of being chased by the males for days before (if not weeks) and then giving birth exhausted...

Moving house and moving your 3" tank!

One thing that may be obvious to you, but wasn't to me, was how to move the actual tank. When moving the I was told to not let it twist or bend as this would cause cracks in the corners. We moved ours (not 4 miles admittedly) by removing most of the water first, and then placing the tank on a...

    Gravel to Sand

Hiya all, Sorry to repost, but this was one of many posts lost during the recent furore and I didn't get around to reading all of the replies that you people most kindly put in. Plus those I did get around to reading, there seemed to be a lot of interest in this question. So How would you...

    Changing from gravel to sand.

Guys and gals My 96l tank has been set up for about 6 months now (gosh is it that long? time flies when you're having fun :D ) and I think I made a mistake at the start - I used gravel. Now I thought I liked gravel better when I started, but it's a devil to keep clean, and the tank suffers...

Nope 35, just act like a three year old sometimes. I was going to comment on your reply, but Black Chameleon said it all for me. We were all new at one point, just take it easy - ok? As for my comment, I apologise - it was childish. However, you were a bit harsh on smiles.

If my brother is mad at me he takes it out on fish

Wow, what a situation. I'm afraid that it really must come down to only one person to sort this out - your Mother. Obviously from what I have read, your father wasn't exactly a nice person, and your Mother is also obviously feeling guilty about the situation (a common occurance with shattered...

Tanks + Fish of the Month

Sorry, I've just got back to this thread. I timed it out of interest. It wasn't really a problem - you get used to it with dial-up (please Santa bring me ADSL and router !!!!! :D :D ). I didn't vote until William's reminder 'cause I must have missed the original post, or forgot, or something!!

    Want to replace my Filter

CFC - that's exactly the problem I am getting. I'm having to clean the water far too much to remove particles. When I read teknikz reply I thought it might be me overfeeding etc, but at least someone else is having/had the same problem. I'll also take you advice on the sponges, I have been...

Glow in the dark fish in the U.S.A. yay!

Can I first start by saying how well everybody has written about this subject (especially Ken - this seems a subject very close to Ken's heart). Personally, I wouldn't want a GloFish whether it was created for the benefit of mankind or for a selfish grubby money making scheme. What I see is a...

    Want to replace my Filter

Thanks CFC, I was wondering how I could cut out the filter holder, it's pretty big, and I didn't want to lose all that space if I then needed another place to hold a filter. :D andy, just wait. I take it you have replaced the white cotton stuff at the top of the pile of media that you need...

    Want to replace my Filter

I've got a jewel 96 tank. One thing that sold it to me was the in-built filter system. Well we can all make mistakes. :dunno:  It's very poor, especially when you try and change the filters themselves - you have to take out the plastic holders, remove the one you want to change...

    Fish Intelligence Study

Bit difficult to choose between the two, as both my tanks are between the two. In the 96l, I have real plants, wood, stone etc, but also a castle (the pleco's own now) and a cannon (the loaches like hiding in it) and a fake.... In the 16l, I have a real plant, a fake plant and a white roman...

    Plec Problem

Thanks to all, it is what I suspected, that he is ok, and that I should leave him. It's just the not knowing that I was finding a problem with. Every couple of days I lift the castle just to make sure he's alive, so I presume that after a fortnight he'd be very hungry if he wasn't eating...

    Plec Problem

I've just acquired a 2" bristlenose plec from someone getting out of the hobby (moving and no room), and I'm worried about the chap. I know they hide, and this one reportedly did in his old tank, and they are nocturnal. However, this one seems to be in the same place every time I look for him...

    Cory's belly problem

Kossy Thanks for the reply. On the post in the cory's section you'll notice that Inchworm (I think) said the exact opposite!!! It seemed the most likely explanation (pregnancy) when I saw it first.... so it looks like I have two male peppered cory's and two female albino cory's. Wonder what...

    Cory's belly problem

I have posted this in the catfish area two days ago, and it was suggested that I post here just in case anyone had any ideas....(yes I know it's wrong). Recently added two albino cory's (two weeks) to my tank which already had two peppered cory's. Just now I've noticed that both of my albino...

    Pregnant Cory?

Inchworm Thanks for the reply...even if it doesn't look like good news.. :( Both albino cory's now seem to have this problem although both peppered are fine. Their bellies seem to have black colouration (seen through as grey) but underneath is white, with a black line running centrally down...

    Oops

didn't think this would happen to me.... but it did today. One dead fish from Mother In Law's tank. I was using 15mm tubing instead of my normal 6mm. Go back to the 6mm kev, it takes time, but at least the fish can't get up it. :( :(

oops. Sorry all. pondfreak, I wasn't annoyed or anything although re-reading my post you might take it that way. I realised it's just a script and that it was only for my eye's, but I thought I'd tied down my settings further than that - I've got 12+ yrs in computers and thought I'd got it...

    Pregnant Cory?

Hiya all Not been in this part of the site before - cory's were always the little chaps that didn't cause much problem, although loveable to watch Recently added two albino cory's to my tank which already had two peppered (?) cory's. Just now I've noticed that one of the albino cory's has...

    Nitrite Readings and Ich treatment

Ken Thanks for this..... I always keep my tanks aerated with a 12" airstone and 2 x 1" airstones, purely since cycling.... it seemed to help. I'll cut the dosage (as I've been following recommended's) and see what happens.

    Nitrite Readings and Ich treatment

As a relative newcomer I've put this post here, hope it's in the right place. I've got a tank that has cycled nicely, fish in, doing well, including 7 guppy fry with more on the way. However, last fish I bought seems to have brought in whitespot, so I'm treating the tank with King British...

    Pregnant Guppy with a Humpback

so where do i start then?

nightlife I can answer the last question about cost. I have Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte testers - all seperate - which cost about £6.50 each. The pH tester is cheaper. You can get a "starter" pack of test kits, but the one's I've seen don't include NitrAte. As for the Ammonia question, I...

    Pregnant Guppy with a Humpback

Hope someone might have seen this before. I've got a pregnant guppy (cool, wow, what a surprise! :D ) who seems to refuse to want to give birth. She's been nipping at the males and platies - also males - for the best part of two weeks. I've put her in the breeding unit to help several times...

    whats wrong with this...

Akhtar On a follow up to my previous post, I was working on both my Mother and Father in Laws tanks yesterday (water change, testing Ammonia/NitrIte/NitrAte etc) and noticed what could be described as "unpleasant musty smell like low tide at an estuary river" as mentioned before - but worse in...
