    Stop The Name Questions!

Torso is a great name. If I get a third goldfish, "Torso" will fit in with the similarly poorly-named Pants and Speak. As it is, my betta is The Lord DarqueHart, Eater of Souls, because bettas require pretentious titles.

    Hay For Rats?

As I said, I am working off of anecdotal evidence, but I would say that the alfalfa pellets in some foods are probably more, if not fully, digestible, because they are chopped up specifically to BE more digestible. I don't believe you will find that with stalks of hay, I find it unlikely that...

    Hay For Rats?

well, they can't digest it from what I have heard, so if you were wanting to add it to their diet, it wouldn't be worth it. As litter, I would be meh about it, I don't find hay/straw to be worthwhile in terms of absorbancy, and in a cage in your house, it's gonna end up everywhere...

    Am I Really Being Cruel?!

Any time it comes to the keeping of animals, you will run into opinions. To some people, our saying that bettas ought to be kept in at least 2.5 gallons sounds ridiculous when they have kept bettas that were clearly happy in a little box for three years. The people on the PFK forum no doubt have...

    Lump On Ratty?

cookie, did the vet try to see if there was any fluid (pus) in it, or if it was just a mass of cells? I ask because a fast growing lump that is encapsulated (ie: "not attached to anything", and therefore not likely to be an invasive or malignant tumor) could well be an abscess, and that should...

    Ammonia In My Tap Water?!?!?!?

that's a mighty big ph swing and might explain her odd behavior.

Is This A Mouse Or A Rat?

I definitely wouldn't suggest trying to keep a wild mouse (or rat) as a pet. It is hard enough to keep them tame when you hand-raise wilds, let alone if you capture one that has been weaned already. They are pretty much always turn skittish and aren't very personable, in general.

    Oh, Rats

thank you, yes, I took all of them. The little brown rat is hard to get pictures of, she never stops moving, that's why hers are a bit more blurry than others.

Is This A Mouse Or A Rat?

there's a lot of problems with the glue traps, including that people often forget about them and then instead of a quick death, or a somewhat slower death, the animal is stuck until it dies of starvation or dehydration, or until it chews off it's legs or rips all its skin off, which could well...

    Oh, Rats

Thanks! Josh, I like to consider it a "moderate" amount of rats  They really are great pets, not so great in the walls, though. Did anybody else see the episode of Hoarders with the Rat guy? The animal rescue involved pulled out so many rats they actually just stopped counting, but it...

Is This A Mouse Or A Rat?

A bit hard to tell with the distortion from the trap, the face looks rattish to me, but I'm more used to seeing domestic mice and rats and they tend to have shorter noses than the wilds do.Three inches says either adult mice or young rats (4-5 week old domestic rats are approximately gerbil...

    Horse Kissing Fish

a lot of people keep goldfish in their troughs to eat algae, insects, and larva, so I imagine that that is how those guys survive without anyone feeding them.

    Indoor Rabbit Cages

I would litter train and use fleece as that is what I do with my rats. And if you look into rabbit rescues in your area, you may find a/a pair of already litter trained rabbits so you don't have to do any of the work!

    Strange Fish Behavior

not sure about the rasboras, but this sounds like fairly normal kuhli behavior to me, I had them several years ago and they were always doing laps up and down the side of the tank.

    The Bettas You Look Past

There's no very shocking answer to the question. Fish stay in the store until they sell, or until they die. Which, regardless, is not typically a very long time considering the stress they are under. Customers are worse than a lot of pet stores when it comes to handling the bettas, they take no...

    Let's Id This Fish

Well, so far so good. The female dropped several fry whose current state I don't know (I've only seen one recently, but the tank is well planted so I don't expect to see much of them.) I kept her netted with some floating plants for about 24 hours after the birth and then re-released her. She...

    Purple Spotted Gudgeon

I've found that these are not picky fish, they'll eat anything, bloodworm, flake, silversides, mealworms, other, smaller, live fish, so you don't have to bother purchasing or breeding feeders. They interesting characters, but they are bullies, so take care what you keep it with. I kept mine with...

    Celestial Pearl Danio

I almost never see these guys in the chain-type shops, but they are becoming more popular with the more specialized fish stores (US). And now that they have apparently proven relatively easy to breed in captivity, you will probably start seeing them in the nearish future if you haven't yet.

Fish You Bought That You Never See

My driftwood/oil cat. Like most of the others, they're nocturnal and hide for most of the day, but I've managed to get them out during the day for feeding, they're even taking flake now, though come out less reluctantly for bloodworm. That's okay, I just like having them. When I had kuhlis they...

    Transporting Fish

I did a similarly timed trip last summer (plus some because one of the cars broke down) with my fish and I bagged them and put them in a cooloer/shipping box. I think if you fill the cooler with water you have more risk of leakage or of the lid coming open. In my case, I put some of the fish in...

    Does Anyone Buy Fish Online?

Regarding the argument of buying at local stores over having fish shipped to you, because it's cruel, I work at Petco. Our shipments of fish show up in bags of water in sturdy cardboard boxes with styrofoam insulation straight out of the UPS and FedEx trucks. I have ordered fish online for my...

    Howdy Folks..

oh no, wuv, what a shame! I'm surprised it got cold enough in TX to do that kind of damage, but I'm sure you'll get back on your feet quickly, especially if you keep cruising the boards. And thanks for the compliments on Pellinore, he's come a long way from when I got him.

hey wuv, welcome back. I know the feeling, trying to figure out what's going on and who all these new people are as I haven't been active here in... well, probably almost two years -lol- I've moved away from bettas for the most part, just keep Pellinore now. sorry about those wilds, that must...

    Comfort Retriever

well... it's not a breed, it's a mutt, like any other designer dog, no different from the labradoodles or cockapoos out there being bred en masse because they're fashionable. Cute though :D

    Pellinore, New Boy

Just thought I'd add some update pictures, he's well up to weight and strength now. I've added a filter so he's built up muscle and fin strength dealing with the current, also threw in my Het. formosa and female blackchins to give him something to look at. He was building some very impressive...

    New Bbgs (pic)

well that certainly describes them right NOW, though unfortunately I'm not sure how old they are. They've gotten bigger since I've had them, but not a great deal, so probably they are just about at their adult sizes.

    Pellinore, New Boy

Thanks, I'm quite pleased with how he's looking, and he will only improve as he fattens up and regrows his fins. It LOOKS like his tail has grown and evened out, but in reality he just lost that much more to the fin-rot before I was able to cure it. I was hoping that clean water would do the...

    Pellinore, New Boy

Just an update on Pellinore, he's looking quie a lot better. Still pretty thin, but the fin rot has gone and he's clearly feeling pleased with himself, bubble-nesting and flaring up a storm bubble nest close-up from the bubble nest picture taking exception to a jar of buttons

    New Bbgs (pic)

Yeah, they came in as "Burmese Spotted Mini Bumble Bee Goby - Brachygobius xanthomelas", but who knows -lol- I believe nmonks has said the only real way to tell the species apart is to count scales rather than consider their striping. I'm not too worried one way or the other as they're doing...

    Transporting A Fish Tank

well, you COULD do that, but having gone with that option in the past, it's really not the best plan. There'll be a lot of sloshing and I don't know about you, but my 29 long is hard for me to move between weight, shape, and sharp glass edges when it's empty, let alone with water. I can't...

haha, nah, I only sound that way because I DIDN'T list the disasters I've had ;) Like the camallanus worms, now THAT was a disaster. Starved fish are pretty easy, really, since as long as they're otherwise healthy, all you have to do is add food into their diet -lol- It's just important to...
