I think if you are keeping a community tank and you want cool fish other than just your beta, leave the beta out. Get a little tank just for a beta if you want one very bad. Tiger barbs would be one of the worst things to throw in with a beta. That is a fin-less beta waiting to happen.

Yep, those are gold rams. I'm going to buy some as soon as I get my new tank setup. Thanks for the pics. It is always nice to see pictures of the fish I'm going to buy in an actual aquarium, always hard to tell looking at store's pics, etc.

Unless you are prepared to make a little bigger commitment to the hobby, I would stick with the plastic plants for now. Get used to keeping all the fish alive and happy first and then if you are still REALLY into it, move on to the plants. In my experience keeping plants alive and looking nice...
