Little tank redesign looking for some input!

I like your tanks but I would put more plants along the back in all of them. Perhaps buy a bunch of vallis and put one or two in each tank. Once they get going they’ll be putting out shoots and any that appear where you don’t want them, snip the shoot off once it’s an inch or so tall and plant...

    Is this unusual behavior

From the info I’ve found on the web this species typically inhabits the bottom-middle of the water column so perhaps what you are seeing is their usual behaviour.

    Fishless Cycling Advice

Your ammonia is on an upward curve. Soon (hopefully) the nitrite will do the same. Look out for a nitrite peak followed by a nitrite crash to zero. At that point, your ammonia should also be zero and you'll be cycled. You will probably have a pretty high nitrate level by then, so will need to...

    Purigen

Why did you feel you needed to reduce the nitrate level? 8ppm is not high.

    Extracting debris without removing water???

Yeah, just clean the gravel with a siphon as normal and then quickly filter the water you've removed and put back in tank. I sometimes do this. A fine mesh filter works quite well - the type used to strain off BBS.

    Not crazy about them ?

I've never liked livebearers at all, at least not the ones commonly available. However, for the past couple of years I have been keeping two 5 gals, one with chilli rasboras and the other with axelrod's rasboras. Living in an area with pretty hard water I have to harvest rainwater and mix with...

    Breeding baby brine shrimp

Rotifers are no good for adult fish. As I keep tiny fish, the only live foods they get are baby brine shrimp and microworms, both pretty easy to culture on a small scale. If you need something bigger then I don't know much about that I am afraid, but I do know that people culture things like...

    Breeding baby brine shrimp

Hi. I don’t know much about raising brine shrimp beyond the baby stage but I have an alternative suggestion for you. How about raising a community of small inverts in a spare tank? Scuds, daphnia, seed shrimp, copepods. Don’t know a great deal about this either mind, but it would take salt out...

    The fish toilet

Looks like it's a device that allows you to easily remove solid waste that would otherwise sit in the filter between water changes. I suppose if you have a big tank with big poo machines then it could be handy to stop the filter getting clogged and to allow to remove the solids more often rather...

Should I gradually dim light at night?

my light does gradually dim, but if your light doesn't have this function then just make sure there is some light in the room when the tank light goes off. That way, the fish aren't instantly plunged into complete darkness. My tanks are in an open plan room with different lighting zones...

🐠 TOTM VOTE NOW - September 2024 Tank of the Month Contest (16 Gal and smaller)

This is one of my 5 gals. It's been more or less in it's present form for about a year. Plants are vallis, rotala “orange juice”, Egeria densa and two types of mini Anubias attached to bog wood. Critters are one horned nerite, 10 chilli rasboras, 2 Pygmy corys that are the remnants of a...

Marimo algae balls… what are these steel wool, of the plant world, and how do they fit in our aquariums???

I used to have these and I think that magnum man may be right in that many for sale on the web are, I suspect, not true Marimo moss balls and are just rolled up hair algae. I am still suffering the legacy of this in the tank I kept them in as I’ve got quite a bit of hair algae. I know there...

Couple of questions about hatching brine shrimp

They are tiny when they hatch. I don’t think it makes any difference what eggs you use, the newly hatched shrimp will be same size. It sounds like you don’t need very many shrimp, in which case I’d recommend this...

    Uninvited guest(s)

We had some blue tits living in a void a couple of weeks ago and they were getting inside the house. It’s all gone quiet now, so I guess they’ve fledged. Another job to add to my list- find the hole and block it up.

Weird old posts from 2000s lol

In the uk we are in a bit of a state of flux with weights and measures. Things like kilos, litres and centigrade have been gradually gaining in popular use and are now probably the dominant units used. Another generation or two and almost no one will be using pounds, ounces, stones, gallons and...

    Juwel cirax

It should never need replacing, but will need occasional maintenance. In an ideal world, you'd have sufficient mechanical filtration prior to the Cirax so that the Cirax does not get covered in particulate matter. However, even the most stringent mechanical filtration will let small particles...

What is the pH and hardness of your tap water? That will go a long way to deciding what sort of fish you should be looking at.

Unidentified mollusk, what is this thing?

They will have come in on plants or even just in the bag that the fish were in. They are hermaphrodite and so you only ever need one to start a population. yeah, their population will be kept in check if available food is kept in check. They do eat a little algae so are not all bad. The ones...

Unidentified mollusk, what is this thing?

Looks like a freshwater limpet to me. Pretty harmless. If they are established in your tank then you will most likely never get rid of them.

    Softening my stance on snails

I have freshwater limpets in both of my nanos. For many months I tried to exterminate them relentlessly but just had to give up in the end. I'm okay with them now and actually, they do eat a little bit of algae. Since i put a nerite in each tank there's a lot less algae available to the limpets...

I think my pygmies are getting ready to spawn?!

The key thing will be if they are positioning themselves in a T position with one fish across the nose of the other. My pygmy corys used to do this a lot and would leave eggs on plant leaves. The cherry shrimp soon devoured them.

    Live food for dummies

I've never dechlorinated my tap water when culturing micro worms or hatching BBS. I get plenty of both. Everyone's tap water is different though.
  30. Mikeyboy123

Do you guys not like tank backgrounds???

With my two nanos, one has a black 3d background (Juwel STR) and the other came painted plain black. With the amount of plants that I've got in both tanks, you can't tell which one has the 3D background. The 3D background does act as a bit of a magnet for algae and it is much harder to remove...

Rain water to do water change?

I have used a mixture of rainwater and tap water for a few years now. I live in the northeast edge of London (England). The rain runs off a neighbour’s garden building that has terracotta roof tiles and is collected in a food safe plastic barrell. I filter the rain/tap water mixture over...

    Holiday feeding

I think a week without food is fine for pretty much any aquarium creature. More than a week and I think I would not be very confident leaving something tiny like my chilli rasboras. I use this when I'm away for more than a week. Works well and allows you to determine precisely how much food is...

    Live food for dummies

I just use plain oats mixed up with hot water for my micro worms. I don't bother dechlorinating the water. It's important to add the water a bit at a time as you can easily overdo it. It's a bit difficult to explain what the texture should be, I just know when it's right. Once the mixture has...

    Too many plants

Agee it's over the top some times, to the extent that the fish have hardly any free space. Not a problem for smaller fishes that like to hang out/swim around in the plants but I've seen vids on youtube where they have 3 or 4 angels that have nowhere to go other than a few litres in the middle of...

Papa John's Dang Near Killed Me

I absolutely love chilli. There's a brand widely available here in the UK called Encona which is my go to sauce. Plant questions!

I'd put some vallis in as it has got to be one of the easiest plants. You can try and corral it in with rocks or just let it get on with it, and if shoots pop up where you don't want them you can just remove them or replant. If you want a red plant ludwigia palustris "super red" is pretty easy...
