    Aquarium Maintenance Routines?

50% water changes weekly is ideal. If I don't get to it exactly weekly it's not a big deal. The weekly routine ensures ideal conditions for the fish. I don't test water. Like everyone says, it's going to be good with a weekly 50% change. I've a lot of experimentation to test extreme...

Is one Double Sponge Water Filter big enough for lightly stocked 10 gallon

Imo and what I actually do, all you need is a single sponge filter. (I make my own. Cost is about $1 each) 50% water change 2-3 times a week and you should have extremely clean water. Add plants if you like and it'll be even better. I.raise guppy fry, up to twenty for about 2 months in 2.5...

Frustrating advice for newcomers to the fish world

Actually, the opposite is true. In the eighties and nineties there were many MORE species available. Of course where I lived there where world renound ichthyoligists such as Dr Joanna Norton, Dr James Langhamner, aquarists such as Bill Gillies and many more. If not for Dr.Langhamner several...

Frustrating advice for newcomers to the fish world

I did write a separate response regarding this that the caveat is if you keep fish requiring more extreme conditions. You're 100% correct. You have to get the water correct for those. Even so, if ammonia is kept low, it's a quicker cycle. Marine is beyond my scope.

Frustrating advice for newcomers to the fish world

You are correct. 100%. If you want to fix your water, do water changes approproate to your set up. I guarantee that 50% water changes and "overfeeding" fish since that they ate healthy will eliminate 75% or more of peoples issues. I don't even test my water. What's the point (outside of...

Frustrating advice for newcomers to the fish world

All I can say is that I've been keeping fish since the 80's and the paranoia that has taken over the industry by big companies trying to sell products through fear is insane. Theories and facts. Well, here are a few facts. I've never ever cycled a tank without fish in it and I've never lost a...

    Tank cleaning

No, it's not. I had a chance to spend a lot of time with a world renound ichthyologist many years ago when I was a member of the Detroit aquarium society. Dr. Jim Langhammer. He was one of the leading experts on live bearers, President of the ALA and curator of Belle Isle aquarium in Detroit...
