NERITE SNAIL AND OSTRACODS - HELP!!

My (previously healthy) cherry shrimp tank has become completely infested with ostracods (seed shrimp) - enough to make the water look cloudy. They seem to be outcompeting the shrimp and one snail for food. I did a lot of research and have concluded that the only sensible way forward is to start...

    Shrimp eggs or something else

Copepods or seed shrimps - maybe? The ones in my cherry shrimp tank look just like your photo. Do they move around? If so, they are probably these harmless, tiny crustaceans. On another thread someone suggested that Endler’s livebearers might like to eat them......

    Our community lake

Plus - when we went on holiday nobody could find us for two weeks..... If it was an emergency BBC radio would broadcast a message e.g. “Will Mr J. Smith, who is touring Devon in a Morris Minor car, please contact St. Helier hospital where his uncle is gravely ill.” Mobile phones were science...

Is anyone keeping a running total? I was going to add on the latest few post amounts but when I tried to find the last running total I couldn’t view most of the thread. Probably because I’m a complete Luddite and incompetent with this new fangled technology....

    Save my baby shrimp!

OK - I think the bucket and pipette method is the way to go. (And I just happen to have a white bucket and a wide end pipette available!) Thanks for the help everybody. I hope the new babies will be grateful..... I just couldn’t bear the idea of being a mass shrimp-killer...

    Save my baby shrimp!

Thanks, but I think that herding them anywhere is a non-starter - I can’t even see them without a magnifying glass most of the time! The fine mesh over the inlet tube of the water siphon might be possible tho’......

    Save my baby shrimp!

My cherry shrimp tank has a swarm of tiny, tiny baby shrimp. Which is great..... it’s the first time one of my females has had a large brood. However, I have a practical problem. How do I manage a water change without sucking up all the lovely babies? All sensible suggestions gratefully accepted!

    Our community lake

I can add another 154 litres in tanks (Plus a 6ft x 11ft x 3ft deep goldfish pond in the garden - but I don’t know if that counts towards the total. It needs attention every day at the moment as we’re in “green slime algae explosion” season in the UK.)

What Should I Do For Work?

Naughts is right about what you are allowed to do under 18 in the UK. I have a vague idea that the school/ college you just left has some sort of obligation to help you find something you can do within the law(?). It might be worth trying to re-open a dialogue with them. However, if there is a...

What is this on my BN Pleco?

I’m sticking by my original idea of a coelenterate of some kind. There are literally thousands of types with multiple numbers of tentacles - and I think it’s in there somewhere! It’s the way it moves......

What is this on my BN Pleco?

Re. Superglue repairs..... The giant snail (19cm long shell) fell off the wall onto a concrete floor in front of my class of 6 yr. old children. The shell was in several large bits and the kids were really upset as they had been caring for the snail for nearly a year. The zoo suggested superglue...

What is this on my BN Pleco?

OK - I assume that the BN is not getting better? Given that you are in the UK you might be able to get some sensible advice / positive identification if you contact somewhere like the aquarium section of London Zoo. I‘ve found them to be very helpful in the past when I needed emergency advice...

What is this on my BN Pleco?

Jamie - have these things got bigger since you started watching them? Are they actively interfering with the fish’s breathing?
  28. Udanghantu

What is this on my BN Pleco?

Re. Tentacles - the mystery organism has at least 6 (possibly more) very obvious moveable appendages radiating out from a central trunk with a central orifice which may well be a mouth. So I think they qualify as tentacles...... I googled the word and it just stated ‘invertebrate feeding appendage‘.
  29. Udanghantu

What is this on my BN Pleco?

The tentacles show really well on the original video. In the still pics. everything just looks like a fungal infection and they don’t show the full scope of this thing. I think this may not be a ‘parasite’ - as in an organism which has a specific host which it exploits - but just something...

What is this on my BN Pleco?

Sorry - no helpful suggestions - I’m a very newbie fish keeper who just happens to be good at spotting coelenterates! Re. “This is a wild-caught fish“ - in the wild larval forms of coelenterates can be very tiny and float around in the water until they find somewhere suitable to settle down and...

What is this on my BN Pleco?

I may very well have this completely wrong - but - the thing on your fish looks (and moves) like some kind of coelenterate. This is an invertebrate group which includes jellyfish, corals and hydras. There seems to be a central mouth with surrounding tentacles which are wafting food towards the...

    My beautiful Betta

This is my ‘work in progress’ tank - I’ve never had a planted tank before and it’s a steep learning curve! It has the usual small fish - neon tetras, ember tetras and a couple of (formerly homeless) female Endlers - and the star turn is my beautiful male Betta called ‘Sundance’. (The tiny shrimp...
