Only just read the above message; I feel for you.

    New Aquarium owner

1cm of fish per one litre of water is a reasonable benchmark. Guppies and potentially Betta‘s given the right conditions at the surface (such as cover) are going to occupy the top third of your tank. A fish like Neon tetra would occupy the mid level but I would recommend a small fish like the...

First attempt at a planted aquarium

I haven’t used root tabs; I can perhaps appreciate their need pre stocking since there are no fish to supplement their food but, and this obviously depends on your stocking intent, once fish are added, their detritus will provide (potentially) all the fertiliser they (the plants) will need...

    New and needing help!

This may now sound crass but I would grow them out and cook them up. Works for potatoes and tomatoes so why not cray fish?

    Nitrate removal

Can you hook up a water filter from your mains? I think they are essentially activated carbon but perhaps might do the trick.

That’s a pretty looking cray fish. I don’t mean to sound crass but are cray fish edible?

    New Tank: Lessons Learned

That is a lot of tanks! I kept most of mine, selling one 94 litre tank that I just couldn’t get on with, and as such my shed (and now garage) are lacking in useful space. I can appreciate wanting to breed: My original angelfish pair tried a few times but given the community tank they were in...

how much heater watt for a 230L?

I would invest in a second thermometer. While one is about to be removed (only added to test the temp in the middle of the tank) I currently have four thermometers for my aquarium. This is so I could check the temp in each area of the tank during set up.

If you could have one freshwater fish, what would it be?

Perhaps a common pleco and Peacock Cichlids but having just up sized to give my current stock more space it probably isn’t the right time.

    Aquarium V 3.0

Hello and welcome to my journal of our hobby. For the record, I do not usually reference the Latin name of plants and animals but I acknowledge there are those who do so I have included these where possible, with links to further information to both provide myself with a reminder and possibly...

    New Tank: Lessons Learned

I can remember my old man having a fish tank when I was a young lad; I think he kept guppies. I guess when the wife suggested getting fish she unleashed a long overdue passion that had laid dormant for 30 plus years. I’m sure she regrets it now though ? I think she may just resent having an...

    New Tank: Lessons Learned

The Internet certainly is a great place for learning; I found there to be lots of conflicting advice and generally two or more schools of thought for certain topics with a myriad of people seeing different results for similar setups and stocking choices. I guess, since so many report different...

    New Tank: Lessons Learned

Hello and good health. Five years ago my wife suggested we get a fish tank and some Neon Tetra. Finding a nice 120 litre (24 UK / 30 US Gl) for £20 on a local selling page, I made the short drive to collect what would be our first aquarium. At the time I had an allotment and while I didn’t...
