How long does beneficial bacteria live without an ammonia source?

Will the beneficial bacteria really start dying if not constantly fed? I am doing my huge WC today and getting fish on Sunday. I don't want to add more ammonia if I don't have to. It'll be about 48 hours from when my ammonia and nitrite are 0ppm to the point I add fish. My airstone and filter...

What if I add fish very slowly?

    Almost there.... Almost....

Many many doses. I had some problems at the beginning. I'm coming up to about day 60 of cycling.

    Almost there.... Almost....

Can too high nitrates cause nitrites to drop more slowly? I'm at the finish line with my cycling. My ammonia (about 1.5ppm) is getting converted in less than 24 hours but my nitrites are taking about 30 hours. Should I be doing a WC? It's been like that for the past 4-5 days. I want it to be...

Am I close (and other questions)

I finally got my ammonia to drop relatively quickly. Now all i'm waiting for is my nitrites to drop as quickly. Is it normal that it was almost 3 days for my nitrites to drop (after I dose ammonia)? Also, my nitrates are very high, obviously. Should I do a WC to bring them down or will it not...

So what happens after my cycle is complete?

The platy is in there temporarily. No worries.

So what happens after my cycle is complete?

I'm scared to add in just 2-3 neon tetras as I heard they can get pretty stressed in groups of less than 6. Would it be a problem if I add 3 one week and another 3 maybe a week or 2 later?

So what happens after my cycle is complete?

I've had to do a fish in cycle (please don't kill me - I'm doing it as responsibly as possible). I have 1 platy in there right now and it seems to be working well. Now my question is, what happens when I want to stock more than 1 fish? Right now my bacterial colony is growing to handle the waste...

Can someone confirm the good news?

But wouldn't doing a WC not allow the bacteria to grow?

Can someone confirm the good news?

I was using ammonia. It wasn't working. Completely stakes, and never got under way. I did a 90% WC and I am finally starting to see nitrites. Now I am doing a fish-in cycle with a platy. I am carefully monitoring ammonia though.

Can someone confirm the good news?

I've been trying to cycle for almost 40 days without success. I decided to do a 90% WC last week to maybe start over. Well, today this was my reading of nitrites. The one on the left is my aquarium and the one on the right is my tap water. The tap water is absolutely 0 ppm. The one on the left...

How long does it take for fish food to break down and release ammonia?

Oh dude, don't get me started on that. Ive been using pure ammonia for the past month with 0 results. I basically started my cycle over completly now.

How long does it take for fish food to break down and release ammonia?

Yes to cycle a tank. I added a few pinches, crumbled it up very well. It's a 25 gallon.

How long does it take for fish food to break down and release ammonia?

Basically, topic. I am using flake food. I put in a few small pinch in my 25G. My temp is about 80. How long does it take approximately for the fish food to break down to ammonia?

Can anyone watch this and help me out somehow? I'm at a loss here...

Yup, dechlorinated. I used pure ammonia to cycle. I have since decided to restart everything. I did a 90% WC and started to use fish food as ammonia.

Can anyone watch this and help me out somehow? I'm at a loss here...

If you see my post history, you'll see that I've been trying to cycle my tank for over a month. It just won't start. I now decided to make YouTube videos documenting my journey. Can someone maybe watch them and let me know if they catch something I don't? I'm at a loss for words here... Not sure...

What could I have done wrong?

Thanks! At this rate, I'm not sure I'll ever see my cycle start... I just did a 50% WC, added more dechlorinator, more Stability and a little more ammonia. We'll see what happens...

What could I have done wrong?

That's the thing, my cycle never started. Something must be up... I want to maybe do a big water change to see if it stimulates it to start.

What could I have done wrong?

I've never done a WC. I added my water over 3 weeks ago with ammonia and have been waiting ever since. When you say I can overdose, how easy is it to do that? I'm pretty sure I've dechlorinated the water in there now, however, I can't see why else my cycle isn't starting. If I add dechlorinator...

What could I have done wrong?

Can you ever overdose on a water conditioner? Would it be too late to dump a little more in the water just in case?

What could I have done wrong?

Yea, I don't have the tetrasafe in my area. I've read decent things about Stability though on some other message boards.

What could I have done wrong?

Do you think at this point, doing a 50-75% WC would harm anything at all?
  27. M

What could I have done wrong?

I'm on day 28 of cycling a 25G (fishless with ammonia). I have seen 0 progress. My ammonia is still at about 4ppm. Nitrites and Nitrates are 0. I don't understand where I could've gone wrong. My water is drchlorinated. I have 4 plants, an airstone and some lava rock. Temp is 80 and ph is at 7.8...

Cycling my tank and this algae is on the leaves on my plants.

No ferts for now during cycling. Will be using Aquarium Co-Ops all in one when done cycling. My ph is 8.0ish. Temp is 80 degrees. My ligbt is on about 9-10 hours a dsy. I might keep it off every second day or just decrease the time to 6 hours or so for now.

Is using Seachem Stability necessary AFTER my tank is cycled?

I'm guessing the answer is no, but I just want to confirm. I'm going to start using Seachem Stability to help my cycle along but I was wondering if I need to continue dosing even after the tank is establish

Can low ammonia delay the start of a cycle?

No fish. I got about 4 plants in there right now.

Can low ammonia delay the start of a cycle?

I started my fishless cycle 22 days ago. I dosed pure ammonia in my dechlorinated water. Added plants and decor. Jacked my heater to 80 and turned on my airstone. 22 days later, ammonia is the same, nitrites are 0, nitrates are 0. My cycle hasn't started yet. That damn API test kit is hard to...

New here - something's up with my cycling

I'm at a loss... Is it possible that the bacteria needs quite a bit of ammonia to start growing? Maybe I thought I was dosing to 2ppm but it might've been closer to 1ppm? Would this make a difference?
