    Substrate depth

ok thanks for the replies. Each time I have a clean around I run my fingers through the sand just to loosen any algae and other stuff. Occasionally this helps release some bubbles of gas too. Doesnt seem to be a prob but will take some out if it is!

    Substrate depth

When I set my aquarium up in January I laid an even layer of coral sand about 1" deep across the whole base. With the spray bar and circulation pumps the sand at the back of the tank has pretty much been repositioned towards the front. It seems to have settled and found a level that its not...

    water changes

Oh ok, maybe I will try removing the filter mats. The nitrate level was about 25 which is why I thought I wasnt doing enough of a water change...also books Ive read have suggested 10% a week or 20-25% every two weeks. Do you think it might be the filter sponges that are increasing nitrates then...

    The deep end!

....Chac, what would you recommend I feed the corals on? The dragonet (if thats what he is!) was sold to me by my local aquarium as a scooter blennie. My research had already told me not to put a dragonet into a new system. Are these similar fish....I need to find out what he is

    The deep end!

The dragonet seems really happy...at the mo! have had him for over 2 months. he mainly picks at the coral sand and the rocks but he also has a go at the flake that goes in for the clowns. I also feed them frozen "marine cuisine" that has shrimp in or a herbacious one to give them some greens...

I need to change about 60litres of water per week for my tank. So far this has been done using buckets and repeated journeys up and down stairs, step ladders and water syphoning. There has to be easier ways. Do people usually set up pumping systems or do you all use other techniques? ...and...

    Miracle mud

Ah, thanks for that. I guess next month my system will have been running for 6 months and the first change of miracle mud will be upon me. Ill look out for mineral mud instead. Will also see if I can get the macro algae to take root in the bed. Is it a good idea to try to get several types to...

    Miracle mud

I started a reef tank in January and bought all the equipment suggested by my local aquarium. One of the things they recommended was "miracle mud" which sits in the refugium part of my sump and is where the macro algae grows. What is miracle mud? As far as I can see the algae is just floating in...
