Thanks everyone :) Im quite proud of the set up myself. I got the pot from a cheap store something like the reject shop or cheap as chips. it had drainage holes on the bottle which ive sealed with silicon to stop anyone getting curious and deciding to try to get through the gap.

I think you are right. I had a dwalf gourami a few years ago who made noise and have since noticed similar noises coming from certain betta tanks though i wouldnt describe it as rasping, but i cant think of a word to describe it.

You probably should give him a water change the day before you leave as well, just to reduce an ammonia / nitrate build up

I wouldnt add any more fish to that tank, infact your already over stocked. Plecs get big and they're messy. If you rehomed the plecs and rainbow fish you could add another pair of mollys or 5ish neons, or keep the rainbows and rehome the mollys (and plecs) but thats the only way you can safely...

Try advertising your excess fish in the buy, sell and swap board, there is also a yahoo group called freecycle Pets which ive previously used to rehome plattys with success. If you can rehome all the males you can eventually stop them from breeding and keep a happy female group.
