    Columbian Tetra Problem

Decision taken to euthanize the Tetra as it had stopped feeding and it's position had worsened to the point where it was hanging almost vertically in the water. For all the great experiences this hobby gives you, sometimes it hands you some properly crap ones as well.

    Columbian Tetra Problem

Thanks for the input Bryon and noobgamers, I obviously hadn't sat down and thought this through properly. Further to my earlier post, the fish seems pretty normal apart from it's overall position in the water, it's swimming about actively (as active as the others) and it's taking food normally...

    Columbian Tetra Problem

Hi all, not been around much recently, but thought I'd stop by as I have a minor issue with one of my Columbian Tetras (one of a small shoal of 6 in this tank) and wondered it anyone had any advice. This particular fish is hanging tail down (not vertical or anything but maybe 30 deg from the...

    Scummy Layer On Water Surface

Hi, relative newb to the whole CO2 thing here, and although my plants seem to be doing really well on a combination of a bit of Flourish Excel and CO2 daily (only during daylight), I now seem to have a sort of oily, scummy layer on the surface of the water. Nothing seems to be affected by this...

    (Another) Bba Question!

So far so good, the patches of BBA are definitely shrinkng and the other (new) plants in the tank are growing at a furious rate. Fab stuff. Next step is to find a better diffuser and move to a larger CO2 container (fire extinguisher for example).

    Angel With Popeye

Sadly the fish developed a more serious case of popeye in the other eye so given that the meth blue was no longer improving the situation and the fish had stopped eating or indeed moving about much, the decision was taken this evening to euthanase it. Sad but I felt we had run out of...

Can I Put Coral Rock Into A Tropical Tank

OK, well bogwood and plants is one approach - the nice thing about this hobby is there are so many to choose from! If you really want 'coral' why not get some artificial ones - cheaper AND safer!   N

Left My Tank For A Weekend

No worries AmyStroodle, as long as things are on the mend it's all good.   N

Can I Put Coral Rock Into A Tropical Tank

Marine coral in a freshwater tank would die in short order probably polluting the tank horribly in the process not to mention the fact that you would be adding a quantity of (essentially) seawater to a freshwater system - I definitely wouldn't go down this route. Dead coral might be OK although...

Left My Tank For A Weekend

As I understand it, the symtoms of dropsy are usually that the body or belly of the fish swells up and this leads to the scales sticking out, hence it's occasional name 'pine cone disease' like this poor chap (not my image);     From what you describe I don't think dropsy is the problem.   So...

    (Another) Bba Question!

I've been having a ton of problems with BBA too, so after reading up on here, I have started adding CO2 and Seachem Flourish Excel to my (125l) tank after scraping off as much of the BBA as possible and siphoning it out of the tank. I also replaced all the plants as there was nothing in the tank...

    Angel With Popeye

Four days now and the area affected by the fungus and the swelling is definitely shrinking. Will continue treatment until all symptoms are cleared though.

Heavy Breathing / Blue Ram, Cory Cat

I'd do another water test first - Need to check for Ammonia (NH3), Nitrite (NO2) and Nitrate (NO3) as a minimum - If the tank has cycled correctly and you're on top of the maintenance regime, you should have zero ammonia and nitrite and just a trace of nitrate. If the ammonia or nitrite levels...

    Angel With Popeye

So two days in and things are changing. What I thought was a worm turned out to be fungus but the Meth. Blue looks to be starting to get that under control so am a little more hopeful now.

    Angel With Popeye

Have 'bitten the bullet' and bought a small tank setup on the way home from work. Will be hospitalising the angel later on (need to get tankette set up first). Hopefully this will do the trick. Have also bought some plastic plants so it's got a bit of cover. Fingers crossed.   N

    Hi, Newb Signing In!

Not got any current pics, but here's one of my old favourites - took this in 2003 when the fish was about a year old, only lost her last year; Not a good day.     Hoplosternum thoracatum as it was sold to me...Who knows...   N

    Angel With Popeye

hmm, OK. Do i need to do anything to heat the water in the bucket? (the house is centrally heated)   I have a deep, clean plasterers bucket (never been used) would that be suitable? Bearing in mind that the fish is probably 6 or 7 inches deep (including fins) although the body is perhaps 2" deep...

    Angel With Popeye

Hi all, new here, but I hope someone can provide some guidance. I have a young (less than a year old) angelfish who appears to have popeye, but I've never come across this particular sort of problem - Basically, the right eye is being pushed forward and outward by some sort of transparent growth...

    Hi, Newb Signing In!

Hi all, just registered here as I'm hoping to get some help regarding an aquarium ailment but I'll post that in the correct place.   So, the name's Nick as you might have gathered and I've had freshwater aquaria on and off for more years than I care to remember. I'm particularly interested in...
