Changing Gravel To Sand And Plastic To Real

Hi Matt,   You can put the fish in a temporary tank as long as you keep your old filter and hook it up to the temp tank while you are doing your change. You can change the gravel so sand and put in real plants all in one go but do not change your filter to external filter at the same time! You...

    Peacocks/haps/yellow Labs

Hi all,   I've had an assortment of African cichlids for years and now my mbunas are getting too large and aggressive for my set up. I have mostly trewavsae, kenyi and johannis and they just spend the day terrorizing each other.   I am considering trying to trade my mbunas in for other colourful...

    Eheim 2217 - Help!

I just bought a Eheim Classic (2217). It's been 2 hours and I still don't have it set up. I think I am pretty much ready to go but I have one piece left over. It's a small black round cap. There were two in the box but the flat one fits into the output tube. Where does the round one go?!   ...

    Leaking Fluval 305

Ok, got the eheim classic (2217).. now how do I still use the bacteria from the fluval since I can't run them both (since fluval is leaking) - should I just put the media in the tank or cram some of it into the HOB?   thanks!

    Leaking Fluval 305

Just did more research... it looks like the problem is with the Eheim Pros but the classics are still great. Think I am going to head back to the store to exchange the C360 for an Eheim 2217. They don't leak very often, do they? I really hope not.

    Leaking Fluval 305

My tank is 65g. It also has an Aqueon Quietflow 55 (HOB filter) running on it. I am thinking about upgrading to a 75g or 90g in 2 years when we move again. There's a heavy bioload since it is stocked with African Cichlids. Specs of the filters in question:   Marineland C-360: Recommended for...

    Leaking Fluval 305

Hi all,    I had some problems with my HOB filter but then with help from people on this forum, I was able to fix it. (Thank you!)   Then, my Fluval 305 canister filter started leaking! It caused some floor/ basement ceiling damage and now we have to do some re-drywalling. I do not want to go...

To Rehome Or Not To Rehome.

I found someone on my local aquarium society's web forum. Seems like the best possible place to find a new home!    I was still unsure about rehoming him until I watched for bit this afternoon - he has claimed the entire tank as his space and the rest of the fish are cowering in the corners so I...

    Cichlid Tank

Thanks all! Yep it's a Malawi tank.   I'll try tying the anubias to rocks. They are in little pots, should I tank them out first?

To Rehome Or Not To Rehome.

Thanks for your input!! I was thinking electric blue but he has a wider head. Is there such a thing as a blue zebra? That's what he looks like to me..

    Cichlid Tank

hmm reading more about anubias and it seems putting them in the substrate is a bad idea - no wonder I never had success with them before. If I tie them to a rock and piece of wood, how can I anchor them to prevent the cichlids from tossing them around like ragdolls?

    Cichlid Tank

Here is my cichlid tank. I am not a fan of the fake plant but I needed somewhere for the babies to hide. I am going to see how the two small anubias do and if they survive, I think I will try some large anubias along the back.

To Rehome Or Not To Rehome.

I think I am in favour of rehoming but I need advice.   Many cichlids in my tank are 6-10 years old. One of the babies grew up into a big, mean nasty fish and he now rules the tank. He is gorgeous (the photos don't do him justice) but he is absolutely ruthless. He plucked out the eye of another...

    My First Tank...

I've kept African for years and I'm still learning! They are great fish with lots of personality but they need the right set up to reduce aggression.   IMO, you should choose a lake and stock your tank just with cichlids from that lake. My cichlids are all from Lake Malawi with the exception of...

New To Fish But One I Bought Is On Its Side At The Bottom?

One more note - 70l is 18 gallons. Discus need quite a bit more space. There are lots of other really beautiful fish that would do well in your size tank and are a bit more hardy.

I Just Broke My Hob Filter

Thanks everyone for your help! Today I managed to wire it on pretty well. If that doesn't hold, I will glue it ... and/or consider an internal filter. For now, all good!

I Just Broke My Hob Filter

I thought about glueing it but the problem is that it's a clip - I am supposed to be able to unclip it to access the motor so if I glue it, I won't be able to open it up if anything goes wrong with the motor.

I Just Broke My Hob Filter

This is the part I broke:   It's a pain that just a small plastic bit snapped and now I might have to get a whole new filter.. Do you know anything about how noisy the Penguin Biowheels are? It would be nice to find one that has a lower drop off to reduce the babbling brook noise. That's why I...

I Just Broke My Hob Filter

Hi!   I have a question about filters. I'm running two filters on my 65g tank.. I have a Fluval 305 canister filter and it's great. I also have an HOB Aqueon Quietflow filter... However I re-set up the tank and I put on a foam 3d background - I didn't cut enough of it away so when I reattached...

    Cycled Already?

So I added the cubes of frozen shrimp but that only brought my ammonia up to 0.5   I went on a hunt again and finally found some "Old Country" pure ammonia.   I am not sure if I need to start the cycle all over again or if I am doing maintenance feedings or what.   I have brought the ammonia up...

    Cycled Already?

I had some cubes of frozen shrimp for cichlids in the freezer so I threw in two of those cubes. Maybe that will kickstart the tank and give me a better idea of what's going on.   Thanks again for all your input.

    Cycled Already?

Oh I am quite sure the fish are fine - the tank they are in now was way overfiltered.. I had two filters running on the tank and I took only one and left one there and running. I prefer to overfilter a cichlid tank obviously, but they should be fine with one filter instead of two for a couple...

    Cycled Already?

I don't even have a new filter - I just brought the whole filter with me actually!   So, I guess it's cycled then!... problem is I can't seem to buy ammonia in Canada. All the hardware stores stopped selling pure ammonia for safety reasons. It will be another week or so before I can get my fish...

    Cycled Already?

Hi all,   I am moving my African cichlids to a new tank in a new city. I have the new tank all set up and I brought one of the filters from the original tank and put it on the new tank. The rocks and substrate are all new though so I anticipated having to cycle the tank again from scratch.  ...

    Hi!

Hi,   I've found many helpful answers on here and I finally decided to register!   I have several 10 year old african cichlids and I am currently in the process of moving them into a new house. ..Fingers crossed they all survive the move. I also have had figure eights, livebearers, bettas and...
