Cool tank! Looks like your balas have a pretty nice home to me. Of course they could be in a larger tank...all fish could but hey I think its very nice. Don't let the people on here discourage you.

  I'm confused, isn't this thread about your heater in your tank...making your current tank a heated tank? I would go off the glass thermometer, they are generally accurate. Sounds to me like everything in your tank is doing what it should, don't stress about it.

Coming along nicely! A background will make a big difference but it is looking good.

Aquaclear hob filters are perfect for any tank up to 55 gallons imo. They are easy, will last forever and have plenty of room for the proper media to harness bacteria. 

On the topic of the filter I would recommend starting with the AC 70 for that size tank, it is what I run on my 36 gallon and it works perfect.    I have never had an issue with HOB filters if you buy the right one, i have heard of some AC filters lasting 20+ years.

Bosemani rainbows...a school of 6-8 would be perfect for your tank. Take care of them and they have great color, they do prefer to be in planted tanks so keep that in mind.

  No offense but I have to disagree with this....I use wood in my tank and my pH is 8.0, wood can lower pH but it's not a sure thing that it goes to 7.4 at all.

That sounds better...i guess I would be shocked/jealous if your tank cycled that quick. Did you do a lot of water changes or just let things take their course?

Blasting it with a hose or hot water from your kitchen sink will not work...that used to work for me but I guess it depends on how bad it is.

I would return the plec as it will prob. outgrow your tank anyway and do a fishless cycle...trust me I am still in the middle of a fish-in cycle and it's a pain in the butt. Do yourself the favor of being patient and doing it the right way.

I finally yesterday got my first trace of nitrites in my 36 gallon bowfront. I set this tank up on Dec. 2nd and since I put the fish in have had fairly consistant readings of .25 ammonia and 0 nitrites. Finally yesterday I got .25 nitrites to go along with the ammonia so I did a 50% water...

Bad switch is all...your not able to break the circut to shut the light off...if you feel comfortable enough pull the power for a few minutes and try to take it apart, it is most likely an easy fix.
