    Filter Gunky Water

Gunky filter sponges have been cleaned in the water from the filter reservoir (external fluval 406). Yummy! Well that's what my house plants think! Great plant food! Don't waste it!

Of course! Bazaar to think that washing up liquid is worse than bleach, but I understand what you mean eaglesaquarium! Thanks

    Post Your Favorite Fish Picture!

5 silver dollars. Bobette in the middle is the only female, she was about 10cm round here (now about 12cm). Bob (bought at the same time presumably her brother) is till a bit smaller than her and the other 3 boys (Scar, Split tail and No. 5) have caught up to Bob's size now. I've chosen this...

    Anyone Used Hydrogen Peroxide Before?

Am I wrong in being very concerned for the possible toxicity of bleach going back into the tank? Even a trace would surely be bad news for the fish? Hydrogen peroxide is used as an antiseptic agent for wound care and can even be used as a mouthwash / gargle in humans, so I would think that is...

2013 - Tank Of The Year! Voting Poll

My personal bug bear is seeing the mechanics of the aquarium and go to great lengths to try and hide them in my tank. All these have done such a good job of it, we'll done to all! I'm envious! I'm a fish fan, so for me, even the best planted aquascape isn't an aquarium without seeing the...

Changed To Spray Bar On Fluval 406

Thanks folks, I'll look into that! By reducing the flow rate do you reduce the efficiency of the filter and / or oxygenation of the water surface?

Changed To Spray Bar On Fluval 406

I didn't realise that! Do I now need to buy something else ;-) The spray bar gives a gentler more diffuse flow now - still a reasonable movement, but I think it seems better - the little tetras would sometimes get in the flow - swimming up river and didn't seem to realise that they could get out...

    Water Dechlorinator.

I used to do bucket changes so added a small amount to every bucket that went back in! TEDIOUS I then found on here about the python style watsits and DIYed my own. So I now put the dechlor (enough for the whole tank) in a large jug and hold that beneath my inflowing fish water so it fills and...

Changed To Spray Bar On Fluval 406

After deciding the flow from the standard outlet of the fluval 406 (external filter) was too intense, I investigated here, other options. I bought a spray bar fitting and have just set it up. I took the gamble that the one for the 305 / 405 would fit, as I could get this cheaper off the auction...

    Preserving Filter Media

The useful part of the "media" is the bacterias which survive off ammonia and nitrite created from fish poo. So they need ammonia or poo and warmth to survive - hence adding ammonia for the fish less cycle when setting up. Might be worth looking at the threads on fish less cycling - helped me...

Haze On Glass - 1 Inch Starting At Sand Substrate Upwards ?

Yes looks like an algae growth and can be wiped off before gravel cleaning and water change. Mine is often worst near the gravel. But also, my algae eaters tend to work upwards on the glass and leave the bottom inch or so- to the height of the length of the fish from tail to mouth!

    Spray Bar

Sorry, just noticed, £9.99!!!! Durr!!!!! ;-) Looked on the auction site that shall not be named and it looks like the ones for 205, fits 305, 405 etc, so will check, but think it could be the same with the 06s.

    Spray Bar

I have the fluval 406 external ( though the pipes come up the outside of the tank, over the edge then down into the water). The outlet pipe creates quite a strong current across the surface and since adding floaty plants, they're constantly whizzing around, resting just in 1 corner. I assume a...

    Suction Cups!

Yes, I found my heater was forever left dangling and the thermometer floating - I think the fish contributed to a bit of nudging! Since setting up my new tank, I got a new thermometer which seems good so far and sleeves for the heaters, which I got because they're black and disguise the heaters...

    Got Wood

From what Ive read, actually boiling the wood would degrade it. You'd basically be cooking it wouldn't you? So I should think a good scrub / jet wash would be advised. I've also seen reference to people soaking in bleach! I'm no chemist, but I can't imagine that being good, even after multiple...

Do you also have nitrate levels recorded? I took over a complete set up when I started so haven't had to do a cycle from scratch and only after joining the forum, did I realise how lucky I'd been!

    Posting Java Moss

I don't know enough about that, but I was surprised to find such a small package for them and was then outraged when 1st I saw them as little more than 1.5" flattened blobs! But as soon as I released the vacuum, they bounced out and were 3"+ diameter! (Which is what I thought Id ordered!) I'm...

    Bristlenose Or Albino Cory

I must have a strong enough current and filter, as when Ive done the water changes and therefore a bit of gravel stirring and vacuuming, it hasn't looked any different! My old set up was "natural" mixed browns gravel so you couldn't tell if it was dirty or clean, but the new set up has black...

Giving Up On Neon Tetra Completely

My cardinals are doing really well! 12 days since they joined my aquarium. They're difficult to count, but fairly sure there's no casualties. I've almost been watching them growing!! Poor "last one left" neon, is still hanging out with them! But then he seems really well too - so maybe the tank...

    Posting Java Moss

Ive bought a few different plants recently (including floaty stuff from Cezza!) that have been posted. A zip lock type sandwich bag then into a bubble wrap bag seems to have been fine for all - even some in little pots. I also got moss balls - they were flattened and shrunk into a vacuumed...

Help Please, Anything Is Good :)

My friend got a smallish tank - really trendy, fancy thing but the top was open with the light suspended above and the outlet water from the filter trickled over a rock effect thing. Looked nice BUT some of his fish jumped out! AND he had to top the water up every couple of days! I suspect...

    Tanks With Plastic At Bottom

The idea of polystyrene tiles is to even out any discrepancies between a solid glass base of a tank and the cabinet. If the tank is suspended on a plastic frame then the glass isn't in contact with the cabinet and so shouldn't need the polystyrene. Putting a softish layer under the plastic frame...

    Trouble With Silver Dollar

When I had 2 they hid a lot, coming out to feed after we'd moved back away from the tank. I added 3 more and initially they all hid! Though their favourite hiding place must have been a bit of a squeeze! After a week or so, they all started coming out more! We then moved the whole tank inmates...

    Noisy Air

Put a none return valve in the airline (very cheap little gadgets at lfs) and the air pump can then go in the cabinet below without worry of siphoning off the tank! + the cabinet deadens the noise a bit more. Tank siphoning by the airline really can happen!!! My oh had a 4' aquarium when we met...

    Water Changes/cleaning

How fast does it need to be? I use garden hose - a piece just long enough to stick out the window, to siphon out 1/2 of my 350l tank - takes 10, maybe 15 minutes. Add water treatment for the whole 350l. Then refill from the bath / shower mixer with another length of garden hose - that's a longer...

    Tingley Tropicals, Leeds

So sorry, but I had to laugh at the "nocturnal" fish bit there - somewhat monty python!!! Sounds tragic though, that their stock is kept in such bad conditions, we had wondered about going over there, but will give it a miss, I think!! I regularly use Calder Aquatics ( almost my nearest shop)...

    Can I Do This?

This was the advice given to me when I was considering the same scenario (running both filters, transferring to a bigger tank etc) I put all the old mucky filter gubbins into the new filter, half the water from the old tank and its plants (making fish catching easier) and added more fresh water...

    Fake Plants

I have some plastic and some silk in among, but also have java fern, moss balls and most recently added, a floating (water lettuce?) plant which aren't being eaten by the silver dollars or barbs. Giving Up On Neon Tetra Completely

My shoal of neons died (or disappeared) one by one, and then there was one left - who, incidentally, looks great and healthy! But Ive decided not to get more neons, the more Ive read about NTD and then also, looked into their water preferences! So I've just got cardinals. They're only little at...
