I'm liking the use of Purigen in my marine tanks. It really clears up the water well. *runs off to order more* That is some serious pearling. I like pearling, I miss it. L

A flame prawn needs a smaller pistol shrimp. The orange stripe would work well, I think.

    Crazyforcordoras 1St Reef Tank!

What ever it is, IMO, it doesn't look like it's in the best of shape. What size is this tank again, 10g? With a tiger pistol, IMO, you're stuck with one of the larger gobies. A tiger is just too much shrimp for a yasha or a dracula or a high fin. A big YWG is ideal. Find something in the 4"...

    Newbie Stocking Question

Yes, zoas and palys are pretty... pretty deadly. Sorry, you're right, I should've brought that up. The palytoxin is an effective poison. Don't freak out, though, you just need gloves and goggles when handling them. I also wear light facial mask and little pets are locked away. A lot of people...

    Limnophila/myriophyllum

Shoot, my Baensch Atlas is at my mother's and I'm at my boyfriend's. There is a chapter in Volumes 2 & 3 that do emmersed growth patterns. I'll look it up when I get home tomorrow if that's ok? You'll more than likely have an id by then, though, but confirmations are always nice. L

Yeah, I often wonder why there's no bowing emoticon... No, I'm no master though. I make booboos too. Like I said, I did buy a mandarin, I just had the common sense to rehome it when I found out it wasn't eating what ORA claimed it was supposed to eat. I'm saving you some money by giving you...

Pick up the shell from out of the water. If it smells then it's dead and remove it. Living astraeas can handle being handled out of water for a few seconds. L

I'm pretty sure it came with the damsels. That sounds correct. You gotta do what you gotta do. I understand why you're raising the temp. It's certainly a method to use when dealing with it. L

    35G Saltwater Reef Journal

Just keep up the water changes. The astraeas may not be liking the temp hike. Remove dead organisms as you see them quickly and the solution to pollution is always dilution. Nothing much you can do is ride it out and see.

There can never be enough flow. Play it by ear and see where you find dead spots. Haha, lots of fish are gonna get lost in there. There are some wonderful shrimp gobies that are more chunky monkey for your tank. Cryptocentrus pavoninoides - 6" Valenciennea puellaris - 6" Cryptocentrus...

    New Salty: My 29

And I still say no. See, when Tyler's 90g tank matures, he can have a mandarin, possibly even a mated pair, as he'll have enough real estate to support the natural pod population that mandarins need. By the time a mandarin exhausts one side of the tank, the pod population will have recovered on...

    Tyler's 90Gallon Reef Project

It's not that I don't like it, I like it a lot. I just see some spots where the rock touches the glass. That'll be a PITA to clean in a couple of months. Hmmm, I'm almost wondering that when you get your power heads, put one perhaps near the substrate level. That should stir up the accumulated...

    Crazyforcordoras 1St Reef Tank!

More than likely, yes he would eat it. They are also very delicate and don't survive long in the aquarium. Shame, they are cute. When you pair a goby & a pistol, The pistol should, IMO, be between 1/3 & 1/2 the size of the goby. Any bigger and the pistol will "intimidate" the goby. At least...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :shout: Do NOT trust ORA's claims that they eat pellets & frozen. I took home a spotted mandarin from ORA, the "easiest" of the mandarins. Even saw him eat pellets at the lfs, or at least go for...

    Newbie Stocking Question

That stocking is actually rather cool. You're like me, you like purdy colors. :) Zoa gardens are pretty popular. May I also suggest palythoas as well. It's like a zoa on steroids, and IMO, a bit easier to care for. Zoas sometimes melt for no reason, whereas palythoas tend to be more tough...

I would not add an eel in a week, but this is your tank and you've done reefs before. :) Serpent stars are cool. I had a Caribbean something or other, I don't remember. Very interesting animal. When my 36g is mature (again), I'll consider a smaller species that looks kinda similar. Perhaps...

    Red Reef Starfish Fromia Sp.

First, what are the details of your setup? Tank size, how long it's been setup, that sort of thing. From what I've read, they like well-established tanks, over a year old and they are sensitive to water chemistry changes, so again, this is something for an established tank. Also, that they eat...

    Coral Banded Shrimp Compatibility

C'mon, you know I live in Miami, one of the biggest hubs of the SW aquarium trade. What do you think my answer is going to be? I've seen just about everything. Well, I got two skunks the other day. They were in the same tank for a few weeks. Not sold as a mated pair, just as cleaner...

    Coral Banded Shrimp Compatibility

That is a cool article. So if I'm reading it right, when sellers try to charge more for say a "mated pair", it's pretty much bull, right? Two shrimp that aren't killing each other are going to end up a mated pair anyway? This happen for CBS too? Or is this only for Lysmata species? Did you...

Yeppers, this is a 10g, now that I've gone back and checked, so no regulars CBS & certainly not a mated pair... I have trouble keeping up with all of these tanks! I'm getting old! There is a cute little yellow Cuban species though. I've seen that one on occasion. L

They do that. They like to find their little spots to rest. I love emerald crabs. My first one was my favorite, he ate from my hand and would climb on my finger for rides around the tank. I think my YWG ate mine in my 8g, but I've got two in my 36g and they are really cool. I may get a...

    Crazyforcordoras 1St Reef Tank!

Four fish is too many fish for a 10g, I think I've said this before. When did you get a firefish? In a 10g, you can have 2-3 well-chosen species. Both the firefish and the falco are more stationary perchers/lurkers. A fight was inevitable. The falco had established a territory and the...

    Coral Banded Shrimp Compatibility

Be very sure that you indeed acquire a mated pair. If they are not one, they will fight. They will also fight with similar species, so once you choose banded shrimp; skunk, peppermint, fire, and other species are out. While they may pick off a small invert or two, I've never seen mine do any...
