    Silver/river/other Sand?

Hello all, may I have a hint for the best choice of sand for a SG 1.002 with P. Ranga and Toxotes Microlepis? I know Ranga would prefer darker substrates, and I do want to match this requirement. What are the differences between silver and river sand? As I read, I could even use sand bought...

    Experience With Mangrove Seeds?

Hello all, I'm just collecting some mangrove seeds on a beach here in Rio de Janeiro (I don't even know the species...) for my low-end brackish back home. I know (I already have some) that the perfect choice would be a seed with a little green bud on top. This time (perhaps it's the season...)...

    Ceratophyllum

Thanks-a-lot, tanksalot! It's a good bunch of ideas, and I'm glad to see that the two-way growth is confirmed. This adds potential. It will be the only plant in my low-end (SG 1.002) brackish tank, just to give some hiding place to a school of glassfish. Perhaps fixing it not too tightly, or...

    Ceratophyllum

Hello all, anybody with some experience in keeping Ceratophyllum? I understand that, if planted in the substrate, the buried parts will eventually rot and give way, letting the plant do what it's best at, that is, float. So I'm considering to mount it onto a stone. But how?? (I would avoid...

    Demersum Or Submersum?

Hello all, can anyone explain the main differences between these two species of Ceratophyllum, and their different needs? I'm planning a low-end brackish (SG 1.002) tank, pH 7.5, I'm a beginner, and decided to go for this plant, but I can't get a clear view of which species would best suit my...

    Natural Environment Photos?

This is a very different environment: Porto de Galinhas, northern Brazil, brackish. Quite clean water, little river streaming to meet the sea, this spot is famous for sea horses, they're everywhere. The pics were taken at high tide, and the sea is a few hundred m away. I can't recall spotting...

    Natural Environment Photos?

Hi, there you go. It's painful posting photos here, though, one has to downscale them, and still no more than 100 KB at a time... One more note: this environment was FULL sea water. Very dirty place, lots of rubbish collected by the swell on the shore.

    New Low-End Plan

Thanks Neale, I believe it would be acceptable to cycle at the same time? About my mangrove seeds, what I meant is whether the fact that they have developed algae would make it stupid of me to move them into the tank, now. Sure, I can gently brush the algae off the seeds, but of course I...

    New Low-End Plan

Hi again, I'll stick to 6 Parambassis ranga and some 3 Toxotes Microlepis for now. With time I'll see how things go, and go for more. A few questions concerning plants (I'll stay at SG 1.002-1.003 at 15 C), considering Ceratophyllum sp., Java moss and Egeria densa. I know they need longer...

    Natural Environment Photos?

Hello, I took this pics in a small mangrove swamp on Ilha Grande, about 200 km South of Rio de Janeiro. There I spotted a couple of Tetraodon, not able to specify the species, though... I have more pics, if you want. Cheers Maurizio One more thing: I'm not at all sure this is indeed the F8P...

    New Low-End Plan

Back to the original glassfish & T. microlepis idea, then, I was thinking of Amano shrimp to help with algae, and mainly because I'd love an invertebrate. Any other you'd recommend (crabs such as Uca spp. or Sesarma) that would survive those tankmates attentions? I'm aware of the need of a...

    New Low-End Plan

Hi again, I really want the glassfish, and if I remove the archerfish I will definitively give up with my ideal mangrove dream, but then I can go for some other peaceful, lovely characters: 6 Parambassis ranga n Dermogenys pusilla n Brachygobius spp. Can you recommend the right number for the...

    New Low-End Plan

Cool, then, so much for this community. I'll review once again my plans. :-) Most likely will give up on the archers, the aerial part and all the epiphites I was planning to hang were already giving me headache! Agreed on 1.002, I thought Toxotes generally did need more. Maurizio

    New Low-End Plan

Hi Neal, and thanks. Well, my choice was based on reading that archerfish hardly see anything below their eyesight, which is quite limited to upwards... Plus, P. ranga is not THAT small?? To add more uncertainty, I just figured that the two species of fish might not enjoy the same water...

    New Low-End Plan

Hello all, given up with skippers, that's my new plan: 240 l, with an aerial part of about 10-12 cm, SG 1.005 @ 25 C, temperature 26-28 C. 6 Parambassis Ranga 1 Toxotes (Jaculatrix/Chatareus/Microlepis?) a little army (10?) of Caridina Japonica, supplemented by a bunch of MTS (In the future...

    Mudskippers & Co.

Hi again, and thanks a lot, Neal. Hope this doesn't bother, but to clarify: my plan was a ~40x40 cm of land (I thought that would make it for 2 indian skippers: perhaps more if you believe it's necessary), the slope (linear length again 40 cm), and the remaining 40x40 cm would be water surface...

    Mudskippers & Co.

Hello Neal, great hearing JUST from you! OK, I was aware of the interaction problem, I thought I could manage having them in all more or less the same size, so that they could grow up together... :)) Not the case, I understand? The second statement I understand less: you mean a 240 l is too...

    Mudskippers & Co.

Hello all, my plan: 240 l tank (120x40x50cm), SG 1.008, T 28 deg C. Mudskippers will be the main attraction, but since I would like to have a bit more, I'll need to make the best out of the volume. So, I'm planning as shown in the attachment, with some 30 cm of substrate (silver sand and...

    Mangrove Swamp

Hello Ben, I'm planning exactly the same, and frankly I decided that real mangroves are too much trouble, so I'm only considering artificial. Rather than Hagen, which look ugly to me (I've been spending hours in Brazil among them, so I know how they look like...), try these...
