thanks for that! Did 20% water change this morning; NH3 now sitting at 2-4ppm so feel happier now...just going to do daily NH3 tests now until some movement seen takes me back to my biochem studies, all this messing about with molecules!!

    Fishless Cycle Starting Today

thanks TwoTankAmin (good name!) but I think with fishless cycling I should expect nitrites to spike off the chart? I am refering to rdd1952's obviously classic post re. the two methods of cycling which I am following like a bible! With you on the ammonia level which may have gone too high and...

    Fishless Cycle Starting Today

thanks pdludbrooke, may do water change then to dilute a little...will see what the reading tomorrow indicates; went by the calculator that this site supplies! I seem to have a trace of ammonia in the water supply so want to be significantly above that I assume. very impressed with the support...

love those JD's! I am just setting up a 260 litre tank for JD's only; love them, had one 20 years ago and am starting up again so that I can keep them once more. I hope to breed as you have...maybe I will have photo's to match the beauty of yours in a year or so!! :good: Is this a good area...

New Set Up For Jack Dempseys

Blimey, tank looks worse for the blow-up pic...well done though for that! Tried an attachment but wouldn't work, hence the link. Well, I may not need gunky media after all as I have readings for NH3, NO2 and NO3 on the API test kit so somethings happening (1, 0.25 and 40 respectively)...

    New Tank Set-Up

Hi folks - my 260 litre set-up just finished; a couple of pieces of Mopani soaking prior to addition and that will be it. Not thinking of plants other than maybe floaters such as water lettuce as the dempseys I intend to keep like to dig! Comments welcomed...

    Returning To The Fold

thanks for the welcome, all! Yes, going for external filtering for the first time...very impressed with how quiet these things are. Forums are indeed a novelty; good to share the hobby with other enthusiasts as none of my friends are so inclined - maybe a few converts before I'm done!

New Set Up For Jack Dempseys

Hi sadguppy, thanks for that but they didn't have any old media due to the system they use...will bide my time maybe and let it happen naturally! Fish-out seems to be the most favourable cycle route so will do that, and keep hunting for old media to add. In the dim and distant past I never did...

    1000 Us Gal Project

great to read the history of your tank from concrete to stock! A guy converted his cellar into an aquarium, last year I think it was, touted as the biggest in the UK...he gets into his tank to clean it etc! Its got me thinking of a swim-in bathroom perhaps, the ultimate wetroom! Google brings...

New Set Up For Jack Dempseys

Thanks Ruskull - down to the LFS for a cacky filter cartridge I go! I have been looking at some of the pics on this forum and am now tempted to do a sand/pebble mix as the substrate looks so good...probably please the JD`s to have a sandbed to grovel around in. You have confirmed my own doubts...
