thanks Terry, I will up it a little...added 12ml NH3 and thats done the trick, registering around 5-8 ppm... now for the long wait!

going to start a fishless cycle on my 260 litre tank today. The water has been in for 7 days now and the ext. filter running 24/7 over that time period. tank temperature 76F, pH reading 7.8 - 8. Took readings of element levels yesterday and this morning...ammonia 0.5-1, nitrite 0.25 yesterday...

thanks for the welcome, all! Yes, going for external filtering for the first time...very impressed with how quiet these things are. Forums are indeed a novelty; good to share the hobby with other enthusiasts as none of my friends are so inclined - maybe a few converts before I'm done!

Hi sadguppy, thanks for that but they didn't have any old media due to the system they use...will bide my time maybe and let it happen naturally! Fish-out seems to be the most favourable cycle route so will do that, and keep hunting for old media to add. In the dim and distant past I never did...
