What's with the trend for 'Open' tanks?

Yeah, I know I'll have to top it off more frequently. And yes, up to a few weeks ago the humidity was insane for early summer.

What's with the trend for 'Open' tanks?

Being in Pennsylvania we have heating season and cooling season. When we heat we generally run a humidifier attached to the ductwork to put humidity back into the drier air. When we cool in the summer the AC pulls humidity out of the air. At least in my house, there is always something...

    What I've done so far.

The powerhead came in today. It's a little bigger than I thought it would be. And while you can't really feel the current when you get more than six inches from it, it is definitely moving loose stuff that was laying on the substrate. Hopefully it's not too much current. I'll know more when I...

    simple question

I think the opaque background, which they said came with the tank (sunlight blasted I think they said?) gives it a nice clean look. And no reflection.

    simple question

I would simply squirt the lotion in the water and let them swim through it ;)

    simple question

I noticed a lot of UK aquariums have an opaque background. I'm not sure if that is less reflective, I imagine it is, but I like the look.

    simple question

I put black on my new tank. I like the look (went with black substrate, too). BUT... it has me wondering if it's more reflective than the blue I used in the past. Last night it looked like there were three heaters in my tank when viewed from an angle.

    Cloudy Tank Advice

I just filled my 27g cube this morning. I've got CaribSea eco planted somethingorother substrate on top of organic top soil. And a lot of dragon stone plus a couple pieces of driftwood. It is cloudy :) But I expected that. I used tap water (hard) and the aquarium shop said it looked good except...

    What I've done so far.

My view from the couch :) Except it's not that crooked ;) I think I'll move that heater over a little. Then I won't even see it.

    What I've done so far.

The water is in, the filter hanging and the heater on. And I turned the one piece of driftwood to give me more room at the front of the tank. I think it looks better from where I am sitting, too. Lots of floaties. I did not realize that the size filter I ordered, a Seachem Tidal 35, did not...

    What I've done so far.

I was going back and forth with Howard at Finnex yesterday. When I first plugged the light in the two lights started flashing and I could not get it to do anything I wanted. Everything I tried did nothing to stop the flashing, even though I knew it was asking me for a custom program. It turns...

    What I've done so far.

Thanks. The light is a Finnex 247 Planted. Probably a little too high tech for me. Right now I'm trying the normal 24/7 mode, but I set the time 3 hours behind. I've read guys putting them on timers, and that's what the shop owner told me he does, but when I simulated a timer by unplugging it...

    What I've done so far.

Not much input on the lighting suggestions, so I buzzed into the shop yesterday afternoon and bought one on his suggestion. What bugger to set up. Probably couldn't sell it. And it's still not really set up, but there was light. I'm sure I'll fiddle with it before my plants get here, but...

    Which light(s) for new tank?

6500K would be right here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JZG3Q7/?tag=ff0d01-20 I just don't know if it has reds and blues in it.

    Which light(s) for new tank?

Great. That gives me something to go by. I found this fixture on Amazon, which is nice because I can dim it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G28G1FS/?tag=ff0d01-20 And I also found some dimable daylight white 65w LED bulbs, which I'm guessing the 60w fixture should be OK with, on account of them...

    Which light(s) for new tank?

Thanks. I think i would like this much better than the strip light. And I saw a youtuber say he used spotlights on one of his tanks, but I didn't catch the wattage and tank size. Do I need a special plant spotlight? Should I visit a hardware store for a regular spotlight or one of those indoor...

    Which light(s) for new tank?

As I mentioned in the Beginners forum, I purchased my tank yesterday to get back into this hobby. It is a 27gal and measures 20" x 18" x 20" tall. From what I am finding online I need 2-5w/gal to run a planted freshwater tank. What I would prefer is a clip on light, but I am only finding them...

Picking a tank... or tanks... What's your opinion?

Thanks for the list of plants, @ClownLurch . The aquarium shop had some kind of "wort", but I don't recall what kind. I think I'm going to buy one of these starter kits I see online. The shop barely had any grasses, and I really like the looks of grass in the front of the tank. But they did...

Picking a tank... or tanks... What's your opinion?

Maybe I'll see if that aquarium shop is open today. In the past they have tested my water for me. At least when I had saltwater. I'm on a well. I just have a simple Omni filter that the water runs through before coming out the faucets. It's hard water and will turn the filter rust after a...

Picking a tank... or tanks... What's your opinion?

Thank you all for the replies. Maybe I'll just start with one, a smaller rimless in the house. Then I'll know if rimless is for me. And what direction I might want to go at work. No sense in trying to scape two tanks at once. It will be a learning curve anyway. Do most of you have dedicated...

Hi Folks. New Guy trying to Re-Learn Aquariums

Thanks for the welcome guys. @Dajuyu , I'm open to suggestions. I posted a thread in one of the forums. Freshwater for sure, and planted, but tank(s) I'm waffling back and forth on size and number of. And rimless or framed.

Picking a tank... or tanks... What's your opinion?

I hope this is OK to ask this here. I could see a couple forums it might fit under. So like I said in my intro, I haven't had a running aquarium in a while. My last saltwater aquariums (one a nice reef) I got rid of 15 years ago or so. And they were established for 5 years before that. So I'm...

Hi Folks. New Guy trying to Re-Learn Aquariums

Hi everyone. I'm someone who used to have tanks, a reef tank, saltwater tank, several freshwater before that... but that was a long, long time ago in a galaxy far away. And for someone starting out from scratch after not having aquariums for 20 years or so, a lot has changed. I'm hoping I can...
