A testing kit is, more or less, necessary. It allows you to tell if or when something's gone wrong with your tank. Like Slaphppy7 has said, this could easily be due to ammonia poisoning. But you won't be able to tell if you don't have a test kit. Why are you using blue dye?

Hmm... Maybe elodea densa? Killing it yourself is a hard task unless you leave it out in the sun to dry up, and it's bushy enough that when it is nibbled on it's not too noticeable.
