You can test it by pumping from one bucket to another bucket. Try placing both buckets and the hose at the same height, then gradually lift the receiving bucket up and see it keeps pumping.

    Lighting questions

No, you can't remove the black rim, but you should be able to unscrew the hinges which attach the lid to the black rim. Then a new glass can go on top and a 90cm long light can sit on the glass. It won't look as pretty as what you have now, but it will work.

    Lighting questions

The only suggestion I have is to contact Fluval and ask if they have replacement light. If they do, it won’t be cheap though. If you’re a handy person, you can remove the part of the lid which is openable and place a glass cover on top of the aquarium. Then buy an LED light like a Hygger, and...

Decorating & DIY on a budget advice, please!

The 4th picture in post #20, is it a rendered brick wall? Is it on the ground floor? Is the ground outside the wall wet most of the time? If the answers are “no”, then it’s just a ventilation problem which could be easily fixed. If the answers are “yes, yes and yes”, the problem is likely...

    Nicrew lights water resistance?

If the LEDs flicker, the problem could be the transformer rather than the LEDs. It’s a black box which transforms the household voltage and current - in the 2 examples in the pic, from 100V-240V and 1.5 Amperes to 12V and 3.0A A defective transformer drops the current to below what is required...

Cories, dead tanks and other issues

The article mentions we need 2.36 mg of Levamisole HCl per litre of aquarium water, which is 94mg (2.36 x 40 = 94) per 40 litres of water in the tank. KilVerm’s concentration is 16.5g per 1 litre of the stuff in the bottle. So to get 94mg for the 40L of aquarium water we need roughly 0.0057...

Cories, dead tanks and other issues

You can get Levamisole from Petbarn for $20. It contains 16.5g/L Levamisole Hydrocholide. I really can’t tell many mL is needed per litre of water, but I’m sure someone can figure it out. I soak cichlid pellets in it, straight from the bottle, then feed the soaked pellets to the fish.

Adding more substrate - any risks?

I’m not familiar with Caribsea sand. But if it’s for freshwater aquarium (not marine) then it shouldn’t affect your tank’s cycle.

    Best flat-bottomed stand?

You could place the cast iron stand on timber board about an inch thick, it should provide a firm surface and not sink into the floor. Do you have a picture of the cast iron stand? If your aquarium is 29G then it should only weigh about 250 lbs plus the weight of the cast iron stand.

    Buying plants online

I don’t buy fish or aquatic plants online, so can’t answer the first part of your questions. But you can look up AquaticPlantsAustralia for online purchases, their prices are reasonable. Most of the plants you see in the pet stores are supplied by AquariumIndustries, but you can’t buy direct...

    Trigonostigma espei

I think you’re right, some kind of wasting disease. I don’t think they can be saved, they may last another week or 2. If they deteriorate much further, I’ll euthanise them. Espei are hard to get here, unlike the harlequin or hengel. Perhaps I can try to breed the remaining few.

    Water company replacing pipe

The works to replace old pipes may take 4 months, but it’s unlikely that your property will be affected for the entire 4 months. They usually don’t know early on which properties (on what streets) are affected on which dates, so tend to send out a generic letter. Once works start, they will...

    Neon Tetras and Platys

It’s good to have an aquarist friend who can help you out with establishing your tank. If you live in Adelaide or the surrounding suburbs, the GH of your tap water could be up to 10 dGH which is too high for some softwater fish. You can get the water data from SA Water, not your local council...

    how did we get here?

How often did he change the water and when was the last time he changed it? If the cloudy water is caused by the lack of water changes then nitrates could be quite high and pH quite low. A large change of water could kill the remaining fish. There are threads on TFF discussing this, search "Old...

How to sex Red Jewel Cichlid?

The fish have been in the 4 foot tank for nearly 20 months now. So I doubt I’ll see a dead fish or one that gets chewed up or with faded colours any time soon. I assume they are difficult to sex.

    Test kits (Alternatives to API)

I have never used the test strips so can’t really comment on them. I do use the API Master Test Kit though, and at $60 (without GH & KH) + around $15 shipping from Nature Pets & Aquariums, I don’t consider it prohibitively expensive, especially when a kit lasts 2 years. I’m aware some advocate...

I'm much closer to getting a big fish tank than ever before!

This kit comes with an AquaOne heater which is probably undersized for the tank. I have a few of their heaters. Check the wattage of the heater, if it’s 100W AquaOne it won’t heat the tank in winter. To replace this with a more decent heater, say 150W Eheim, will set you back approx. $70 The...

    Electric shock

Your mini internal filter in post 1 consumes no more than 2 or 3 Watts of power which means that the current drawn to run it is theoretically 0.013 ampere (assuming 3 watts power consumption and 230 Volts). This is a tiny current which explains why you didn’t get a real shock. You need high...
