    First tank, Superfish 80l

Things have finally settled in the tank! This morning Fork was still bullying a little, much less than he had been. Now, he's decided he wants more fry and is back to displaying to Socket. If they spawn again I'll have to let nature take its course this time. The other fry are still occupying...

    Snails

I've just bought some zebra nerite snails from pro shrimp. One is very plain with a single stripe - hardly 'zebra' - so don't expect too much of them at present. I suspect they might be scraping the bottom of the snail barrel now. Why is it so hard to get fancy snails and shrimp at the moment?!

Help to start - first 30L tank

Just a couple of additions, if that's OK! The heater needs to be on from day one as if the water is warm it helps with cycling. And, it's best not to add the water, from the bag the fish come in, to the tank. Take the fish out gently with a net, put them in the tank and throw the bag water away. :)

It was one of those things that I was always thinking I needed to buy. So I'd buy some. Come the start of the pandemic and I found I had 88 rolls! I'm still using them up....

Snail food supplement for low GH

Hi Essjay. It was 'total hardness level of 20 mg/l Ca'. So I assume it'll be 20mg/l of Ca, Mg etc. then from your inside knowledge ;)Not a lot for snails

Snail food supplement for low GH

Ooh, I don't know. I've noted it under the hardness section in my journal, but it was all data from the water quality report, so I'm not sure if it was just Ca or not.

I agree: It's balancing freedom of action with social responsibility. There are times when the latter must trump the former.

Vote Now! - July 2021 Tank of the Month contest (17 to 30 G)

click to view video Unfortunately poor video of my 80l tank - please don't judge me on my tablet camera, tremor and my camera work! This is my first tank, set up 6+ weeks ago and fully cycled about 1 week ago. The water is still a little tannin stained from the wood so that, the black gravel...

Sadly the water report only gave Ca levels, not Mg. Shame.

How to introduce a fish arriving in the mail to the tank?

I would do it the standard way of about 30 mins acclimating in the bag floating, then adding tank water periodically, then fishing him out into the water after about an hour. But I've not heard about the water becoming toxic while floating

    Snails

I'm getting some nerite snails. They eat algae, look pretty and aren't going to overrun my tank. However they do drop eggs everywhere :(

Snail food supplement for low GH

My GH is around 3, KH around 2, Ca 20mg/l (14 - 26) - which I'm guessing is low. My pH varies around 7 - 7.5 and I need it not to go any higher than that to suit my fish. I passively add CO2 for my plants which will obviously drop my pH and KH and that is why I add it passively, not actively. It...

    Im legally changing my name....

My first name was unusual at that time - not many Tania s in the UK in the '60s. Then I went to university and there were 3 of us! In the end it was 'big Tania', 'little Tania' and 'CND Tania' (because of my CND earrings).

    Power outage

There are battery operated air pumps you can use, but you'd need a cycled sponge filter too. Alternatively, aerating the tank by pouring its water in and out is a stop gap.

    First tank, Superfish 80l

The fry aren't looking too good over in my spare tank, but then my eyesight isn't so great so maybe there are lots hiding in the Salvinia. I keep feeding them, but initially my heater was lousy and I think things were a bit too cool for them. Still, I have nowhere to place any juveniles so it is...

    I'm So Confused - Cycling 5 Gallon

Oh, the dechlorinator is x amount for the water you are adding. If you add 2 gallons add enough for that to the 2 gallons. If you then add another 2 gallons do the same. That way all the tap water has been neutralised as you go along. Any and all water in your tank should have been through the...

    I'm So Confused - Cycling 5 Gallon

I can't comment on the ich I'm afraid, but don't throw away the filter. There are 2 types of helpful bacteria. One turns ammonia to nitrite. If you have fed them by adding ammonia, as you have, they will start to build up. It is when enough are there and working that you see nitrites. The second...

    First tank, Superfish 80l

They are just too tiny at the moment :( . I can barely see them and I don't have a microscope either. They are less than 1mm as they fit through the breeding box slits, hence using stocking material to cover them. My macro lens would probably show no more that a black tadpole shape. When they...

    First tank, Superfish 80l

Thanks for the tips. At present I've kept them all in the breeding box within the new tank as I saw a loose one disappear into what is my very gentlest filter :( . This way feeding them will be easier too. When they're stronger I'll set them free in the tank.

I think 'should' only comes into it if you are in a position to change your feelings through therapy or something. If that is not the case you have to decide if you like the way you look with the mole or if you'd be happier without it.

I moved my gourami fry into a hang on breeder box last night and did a water change today. He has taken the whole tank as his...
