Moving beneficial bacteria to another tank

I have 2 Superfish Aqua Flow filters. One part has a sponge containing carbon. One part has sort of Hula Hoops in a net bag which collect the beneficial bacteria (this is called CrystalMax). Does anyone know 1. How to remove the carbon, if using meds, without losing physical filtration? 2. How...

    Window Well Aquarium

That is such a brilliant idea from your wife! I would love to do something similar - even have a suitable window - but how are you managing the temperature difference between the outside wall of the tank and inside wall of it?

    Coronavirus...post your thoughts here...

I have always assumed that all contacts of the person with the app had to isolate too? The rules are mad, and Track and Trace are/were an expensive joke. And not paying those who are forced to be part of the awful gig economy for time off work to isolate is barmy. I agree with you NannaLou.

I've not seen any of these things in the UK. We must have different regulations or something.

Diatoms, Bacteria, Algae - OH MY!

I just checked. High phosphates can cause algal blooms.

Diatoms, Bacteria, Algae - OH MY!

Could you have a problem with another parameter like phosphates?? I know silicates increase the risk of diatoms but have a feeling I read phosphates can influence things like algae too.

First Time Trying a Community Tank

That's a really good point. I suppose the problem arises when we try to mix fish from different ecosystems.

Honey gourami with peacock gudgeon goby?

That's brilliant. I gave up on dwarf gouramis because of their health issues but honey gouramis are beautiful too. I'll watch out for food issues. Thanks for the tip!

Honey gourami with peacock gudgeon goby?

Would these fish mix well in a tank?

Best Way to Do Water Changes

I think I have a long hose I could use for that. For refilling I bought a small fountain pump in the end. That way I can make sure I'm pumping warm water back into the tank from a bucket. I'm not sure how I could do that from a tap as my hot water supply contains heavy metals from the loft tank...

Best Way to Do Water Changes

Costs a bomb in water bills, unless you can catch the wasted water for another use. We have meters over here and water is expensive.:(

    Random Discussion

I feel very envious of those members abroad who can live in huge houses, have huge garages and have huge tanks! The UK just lacks space :/

Best Way to Do Water Changes

Am I right in thinking that if you replace water this way you should include some hot, boiled water to warm it up close to the tank temperature?

How to get food distributed evenly?

Perhaps you could try using long tweezers, e.g. aquascaping ones, to take food lower in the tank? Or distract the sword tails with food one end of the tank while feeding the others at the opposite end.

My KH has risen to 7 and my pH is somewhere between 8 and 8.5. Perfect!

    Brown Algae Control

If you haven't had it before then chances are it is due to nitrates building up while you were away, hence water changes should help.

Thank you Essjay. I'll do that now!

    Will tank cycle? (KH 2)

My tank seems to be cycling (my ammonia has dropped from approx. 3 or 4 to 2 in 3 days, and my nitrites increased from between 0.3 and 0.8 to 1.6 in the same time) but my KH is only between 1 and 2 dH, as is my tap water. Will such a low KH stop the cycling or just slow it? Does it interfere...

    Tricky tap water

I've tested my tap water and hunted for appropriate fish, but I'm having problems. My tap water parameters, as checked with the Tetra water test set, are: GH 3 KH 1 or 2 pH somewhere between 7.5 and 8.0 (my water supplier quotes 7.4 to 8.8) I have an 80l, 60cm long tank which is planted and...

    Which ammonia testing kit?

I found some online here in UK. My lfs doesn't stock it, only the marine kit for £117! I'm glad I'm doing freshwater fishkeeping. Thanks Avel1896. I'll get some if Salifert doesn't do the trick since I have already ordered it.

    Which ammonia testing kit?

Hello Avel1896. Thanks for the advice. I took a look at JBL and would consider it in future, but for now it is ammonia testing that I really need and the JBL kit doesn't cover it, sadly. Still, it's a fascinating way of testing.

    Which ammonia testing kit?

I've gone for Salifert ammonia and nitrates. I'd love to try Hanna testers but have just received a £900 bill for car repairs so I'm skint for now! Thanks again for your advice.

    Which ammonia testing kit?

Yes, the Salifert is repeatedly reported as underestimating the ammonia levels, which is rather worrying. I usually assume 5% of 1 star reviews is average but the Salifert has many more than that on the website I checked (I don't know which that was now). If I start collecting more tanks I'll...

    Which ammonia testing kit?

Ouch! The Hanna is a bit expensive at £81 with only 10 tests. My diabetes gear is cheaper! But the Salifert looks good. Thank you for the suggestion. I'm off to buy some :)

    Which ammonia testing kit?

Hi Tacocat. Yes, my kit is the single test from API. I suppose the master kit might be more sensitive for some reason. Is yours?

    Which ammonia testing kit?

Hi all. I'm cycling my tank but have a problem in that my dipstick test will measure 3 ppm but they are known not to be very accurate, however my test drops measure either 2 or 4 ppm rather than 3. In order to achieve the 3 ppm test could anyone recommend a testing kit, preferably one available...

Nano planted tank CO2 and lighting requirements

Regarding the stocking, have you looked on seriouslyfish.com to see recommendations for tank dimensions and size for different fish? I suspect your tank may be a little small for your ideas, although I don't know all the fish you are considering. The website will help. And your English seemed...

    Need layout advice

Hello. I'm not quite sure what you mean when discussing the 2 options for layout, but I thought I'd suggest that adding CO2 might help your Alternanthera, although it might make little difference without sufficient light. It could be worth a try. However, it will probably alter your pH and KH so...

**Question of the week** | What is your favorite aquarium plant, and why?

I have some Eriocaulon cinereum that I love, but I have no idea if I can keep it alive. It's new, like me. It should at least flower before it dies!
