    Just thinking about it

The post that said I may be looking at a marine setup is one that's primarily about plants and how to root them firmly in sand. I feel a separate topic for a build would be better. I'm fortunate in having a decent marine LFS locally who sells all the stuff I would need such as sands, corals...

    Playsand vs Aquatic sand

Dwarf hair grass isn't something that grows too well from seed in my experience. It's a high intensity light lover and plenty of fertiliser is necessary. I planted some of the Tropica hair grass into a sand based tank and it's really struggling. In fact it's going backwards as far as I can see...

    Just thinking about it

I'm considering turning my AquaOne 125 into a marine reef tank. The costs of setting up such a tank are really high and I'm just putting a list together of the necessary tank build at present, not anything to do with the inhabitants of it yet. So I don't have room for, nor do I want, an in the...

    Sticky sand

Ah, I used my own name for them. Panda Cory, but these provide hours of amusement so I nicknamed them to clowns. Anyway, I may turn this tank into a reef tank shortly. Just doing some research first. However much I do to make up beautiful aquascaped set-ups they are all so dreary in comparison...

    Airflow

I'd say to stop feeding the shrimp flakes and things. Most shrimp are fine snaffling about for algae or even detritus themselves but to use actual food for them at too high a level will mean some gets overlooked and becomes food for the detritus worms.

    Sticky sand

Over the years I've forked out a fortune on plants. I made some mistakes along the way such as expecting plants with a need for high lighting or CO2 to thrive in conditions not suited. I've seen plants wilt and die, some just melt away. I'm sure most on forum will have suffered similar things. I...

    Aqua SOIL?

It usually says non toxic or something. After all, kids won't be pleased if they use it play in otherwise. Experience of sand by myself seems to be that it does give better visualisation but if you plan on using it to create a high back and a low front then it'll all be levelled in no time at...

What a snip of a price

I was primarily looking at clownfish. There are so many to choose from. I was also looking at some bottom feeders to mow the sand substrate. I was really hoping to build a community tank with fish that didn't eat other's fry, and shrimp or other crustaceans to scavenge. Everything looks so damn...

Problems of having a fish friendly aquascaped tank

As some of my previous posts will show, I have put together a few well planted and aquascaped tanks with wooden architecture. It was rewarding making them up and the fish introduced into the tanks seem to love them. However there are some problems. 1st is that the fish seem to be out of view for...

    Opinion on Activated Carbon?

I use it just because it's in separate compartments in the filters I bought. I also have a bag of it in the downflow pipe from my roof gutter which channels rainwater into a barrel. That's with a UV light in the barrel just to eliminate any bacteria that gets into the water from the likes of...

Hi! New to breeding and open to any help.

Shrimp are really quite easy. I have bred hundreds of them. I have a good number of different types. The problem is that I really can only swap them for credit in my LFS which isn't as bad as it could be. I am saving the credit to use on a larger tank sometime in the future. The yellows and the...

What a snip of a price

Most of the smaller fish tend to need a larger tank from what I see. I was thinking something like the Red Sea Max 260. I like the overall spec of this and the dimensions are about right for my study. Can't go for new though as the cost is way too high, even without stocking it. I would really...

    Air pump

That has little to do with the noise though. I sometimes find my own make a fair bit of noise depending on the surface they are running on. If they are resting on a wooden shelf for instance the vibration is high and noisy. I place them on a sponge to minimise that. Also you should have an...

Is there a way to bring the KH levels in water down besides R/O units, bottled water, or distilled water??

That's a bugger then. You know, every time you boil a kettle of water for a coffee, the extra that doesn't get used has a lower GH. The boiling reduces a few things, as well as getting rid of calcium. Just bottle it for use later. I did a series of tests for boiled water and posted results on...

Sad also. It's a day before my birthday so I can't easily forget it. That was the day that a certain twice impeached ex president boasted that he now had the tallest building in the city.

    Earth worms and aquariums.

I guess the big question is what do they feed on? If they eat detritus then all's well and good. My expeience with worms is collecting them for fishing trips and they are more easily found by looking for piles of extruded earth so I have to assume they just open their mouths and hoover up...

    Hi please help

Whoaaaa. Do you really want to get involved with the hobby? The fish are lovely. A planted aquarium can be superb and the hours spent cleaning, feeding, changing water etc can be very rewarding but it's also a trap for casual uncommitted souls who think it's all easy going. It can have a huge...

What a snip of a price

I'm thinking of selling my 125 lltr freshwater tank so I have room for a new saltwater setup and was just browsing to see if any good 2nd hand ones were available locally. Well so far I didn't see anything but I did see this beauty. If you're local and have room for it, it's an absolute bargain...

Attempted pics of psuedomugli luminatus/red neon rainbow fish

A couple of things. 1st of all, I too have a couple of male endlers in with a male and 2 female illumiatus and they do swim together as if they are best friends. However, my 2nd point, is that I have a tank with female endlers that have 2 mature fish and fry of varying ages. The older endlers...

Hate suction cups that won't hold!

It's not so much the heaters that I have problems with, although they are problematic nevertheless. It's the internal filters. Even a new Oase filter I bought has suction cups that are pressed through a hole in the casing but when taking out the media trays for sponges and activated charcoal...

    Mystery Anemone

I'm actually thinking or starting a marine tank and looked at the availbility and cost of anemones just yesterday. There are so many and a lot are so similar that a single image might not be sufficient to aid in identification. However I did find a forum dedicated to these things. I've just...

Do fresh water shrimps eat plants?

Plants with low growth chemistry in the water, and perhaps even the wrong lighting, die back naturally. At first this may not be particularly noticeable to the human eye but shrimp will see it and eat the dead tissue.

    Beginner scaping help

The Congo tetra Phenacogrammus interruptus is the African characin most widely traded. It is of medium size and exhibits strong sexual dimorphism. Males are up to 8 cm in length and have very long, flamboyant fins; females are a bit smaller and their fins aren’t nearly so well developed. Both...

I've been down to my LFS today. They've just had a delivery and I JUST LOVE THE CONGO TETRAS. they have the most gorgeous sheen in multiple colours. They also have a different shape. Personally I think would be changing from Neon/Cardinal Tetras to the Congos. It's a large tank and would give it...

    Beginner scaping help

Why something like the rams or apisto's? Do you need to have them as show-off species or for diversity? It's just that rams and apistos aren't easily bred as they tend to need to be bonded with a female from early in their life cycle. I've had both and never had any bonding relationship between...

I got this one for my 75 ltr tank. Actual water capacity is probably less than 60 ltrs due to hardscape and substrate. It looks really nice and does a good job. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000443528332.html
