    unheated greenhouse fish ideas

All good ideas above. You mentioned putting fans in the greenhouse. Very important as you know. Have you thought about using a dehumidifier to control humidity? Dehumidifiers circulate air and produce heat.

    An uninvited guest

That's a beautiful story! How kind of you to provide that kitty with a loving home. She is a very pretty cat. Yep, they have a way of 'adopting' good people. Thanks for sharing!

Is a heater always necessary for tropical fish?

No, to answer your question. It depends on the species and your room's temperature. Often we think of tropical as hot but in reality, many tropical fishes in the tropics originate in cooler waters, especially during the rainy season. My fish room has a dehumidifier that puts out much heat...

Plants no longer growing very well

Okay, that's why I mentioned the guppies. When I wrote my plant column, I would get similar questions and the source often turned out to be a subtle increase in fish population coupled with a new light. Your new light would be the sole suspect if nothing else at all changed but a different...

Plants no longer growing very well

If all things being equal (that is nothing else has changed) then it must be the new light. It might be correct for your tank size but not sufficient for plant growth. Is it a plant light? Getting back to everything being equal...you have guppies and has the population increased?

do normal heaters lose some efficiency over time???

Well, I actually use a couple of heaters rather than one huge one for several reasons. To share the load so one large one isn't constantly running and wearing out fast, if a thermostat fails there is less risk of boiling the fish & better heating distribution. I usually replace heaters after...

do normal heaters lose some efficiency over time???

It is analogous to incandescent light bulbs in a multiple bulb fixture. One bulb burns out, you replace it and the new bulb is clearly brighter than the older bulbs.

    ID this fish please

Wonders of Wildlife is amazing. I wrote venue descriptions and a Pitch Book for them back in early 2000's. You might contact them and ask specifically about that fish. Wonders of Wildlife is a world class facility.

    Am i overstocked

In my opinion, absolutely yes. But I always go with a low bioload for various reasons such as water parameters 'cushion,' growth of fish etc. Some of those fish will get big.

    Bought A Book on Plants

I think I used to have a copy of that book. Is it the one that was published sometime in the late 70's or early 80's? There are many plant books. Look for The Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants by Peter Hiscock. That is a good source. So is Diane Walstad's book The Ecology of the Planted...

    Help with Turtle Tank

My situation is very (frighteningly!) similar to Gary's. A Red Ear Slider (RES) is a long-term commitment. Unfortunately, Arizona has a kill on sight for RES unless you can prove it was purchased from a pet shop. Given your situation, In my opinion, I would try to rehome the turtle...legally...

    Rotting water lettuce

I'll take a guess here if it is in an aquarium: Either it was brought indoors from say, a pond and is not getting enough light or nutrients. If it is in a pond then what you are seeing is normal for the onset of the Fall season and winter. Or: It is getting 'sunburned' if it was indoors and...

    Firebelly toad woes

One of our kids had them in a 55 like yours but we had to put a tightly fitting top on the tank because the little critters climbed out. Try a a screen top. Firebelly Toads are easy to keep and breed rapidly. Try tiny mealworms with the heads removed as well a fruit flies. They also like...

    Freshwater Planted 15G Cube Beginning

Very pretty tank! Not sure where you live in Florida but there is an excellent mom and pop shop near Destin that specializes in nano tanks. Personally, I would keep the bioload very low. Consider Celestial Pearl Danios (Danio margaritatus) as a choice. Let's discuss your pond plans in a new...

Such thing as too much activated carbon?

I don't think anyone knows the answer to your question; I certainly don't how much is too much. If you want to use it, why not do a percentage of the amount you used in your larger tanks if you are happy with the results? That is probably a good place to start if you really think there is a...

    New to the forum

Welcome to the forum, Ella! Glad you joined. Depending on the fish size and frequency of partial water exchanges (water quality) and filtration two goldfish in a 20 gallon tank is the max I would recommend. As they grow, and they will get big, I would increase the tank size to a 55 gallon...

killi fish that live more than two years

Are you on the mainland or one of the islands such as Sicily? They are available in the UK and I am sure if you search around, someone has them. They are very prolific and hobbyists are usually looking for someone to take the offspring.

killi fish that live more than two years

Over the years I've kept several killifish but the most recent and enjoyable was Jordanella floridae (American-Flag Fish) which is a pupfish. They live about five years with good care. Click on the Killifish forum on this site and scroll down to two posts about care I made.

    Fish tank in music room

No worries, many of us pipe in music. I wouldn't worry unless you are using a super subwoofer, playing your guitar through a Marshall Stack or pounding on a set of vintage Ludwigs with Zildjian crash cymbals. Play your CD's and pick away. Just be careful to avoid electrical or grounding...

Stand gaps and uneven water levels

I broke a tank doing that when I first started keeping fish. It was a beautiful Odell. Here is my opinion, put your tank on a solid, level stand that is properly sized for your tank and its weight.

    Java ferns

    Upside down catfish not eating

I have kept them and learned they are very sensitive to nitrates. You indicated the water parameters are fine but double check for nitrates. They are mostly dusk and dawn feeders and most likely are foraging when the lights are out. Don't over feed and make sure the water's surface isn't too...

    Longest tropical fish lifespan

My Archerfish is now 17 years old so we will see. @TwoTankAmin nailed it. Good stewardship is essential. I didn’t really keep records on the lifespan of my fish until around 2003. What I discovered is they often live much longer than expected. My Mudskippers certainly did.
