Decided to set up a 120 gal with sump tank as an African cichlid tank. Need advice!

Wills, I always appreciate your long posts and the time and information you are sharing, so thank you and don't be sorry! I'm at work at the moment, just on break, so I can't reply to all...but yeah my current thought is to have a South American/Central American cichlid theme in the big 220...

    Hello

I bought 5 ramshorn snails once upon a time, turned into about a 1000 (I might or might not be exaggerating)...not all in one tank - I have many tanks. Anyway, long story short, I bought 2 red-tail red-finned puffer fish, and they eat them so prolifically - that I am now struggling to keep up...

Decided to set up a 120 gal with sump tank as an African cichlid tank. Need advice!

I've been keeping freshwater fish for a long time, but never dove into the world of African cichlids before (specifically lake Malawi type). I'd like to do a mix of Mbuna, peacock, and haps. I've seen varying reports of "it can be done" or "don't do it". I've read that there are ways to...

What is your experience with Macaw cichlids?

I'm including ine that I think is a male (#1) my favorite, #2 I think is a female, and #3 seems to have some vertical bars...this is not all of them of course. They are so hard to photograph or even count, because they are so fast.

What is your experience with Macaw cichlids?

That's helpful, I did read elsewhere that females usually keep the line down the side whereas males usually lose it. But multiple searches online didn't mention it at all and I thought maybe that wasn't a very reliable method of sexing them. I'll be home soon and try to remember to take those...

What is your experience with Macaw cichlids?

Wills! I will have to post some updated pictures soon, some of them are up to 3-4 inches now and they are starting to get quite pretty...and I've seen some of the color/pattern variations that you mentioned here - but they are all siblings from what I understand from the person we bought them...

Disagreements with SO about keeping discus and african cichlids together

Yeah, I am aware of the water parameter needs of the fish, that is why I was so concerned and started this thread. I actually do a lot of research to try to accommodate all the fish and keep them in separate tanks according to their compatibility with each other. We used to (both) be much more...

Disagreements with SO about keeping discus and african cichlids together

Thank you for your lengthy reply and lots of info! I'm at work so I can't answer all the questions right now (I'd have to retest the water to tell you exact GH and KH, I do have the test for that, but I don't remember the numbers from last time I tested, just that I'd call it midrange...

    blood parrot cichlids...controversial fish??

No, I haven't heard/seen this gill deformity in other fish, but both of mine are like that too, with the gills open and showing a darker red inside - but just as you said it doesn't seem to bother them.

Disagreements with SO about keeping discus and african cichlids together

Okay, thank you all for the feedback. At least I have more points to bring to the discussion. I will win in the end, neither of us wants to see any of the fish hurt or suffer, he just thinks it can maybe be done if they "grow up" together. But I've made the point, if it could be safely done -...

Disagreements with SO about keeping discus and african cichlids together

So...my boyfriend wants to keep african cichlids and discus together in our large 220 gal community tank. I keep telling him that we both know that the water hardness/ph parameters are too different and we shouldn't do it - but he feels that since they can both (technically) live in our tap...

    I'm in deep now...

Sorry that it has taken me so long, this took WAY longer than expected. Once we bought the tanks, and got them moved here, we consolidated a bunch of fish down to about 5 different tanks and then set about selling (or donating...4 of our largest fish went to the Henry Doorly Zoo) the fish that...

    My Friend's Rotting Betta.. Help

My honest opinion is that this betta probably doesn't have too much time left, no matter what, so I wouldn't spend $50 trying to save it. I would definitely do as others suggested, clean water, a little salt to help with fin rot...and just help the owners with education of proper fish care so...

1 of my blood parrot fish died suddenly :(

lol...well it would have to be psychic powers i guess, i have heard that some are more aggressive than others, but mine are pretty goofy and harmless like goldfish. they have that triangular mouth that can't really do anything. the previous owner told me they were raised together and i never...

1 of my blood parrot fish died suddenly :(

Only had these two for about a month and a half, they came with a tank purchase we did and I'm not sure how old they are - but seem to be full grown (about 4-5 inches and fat, seemingly in good health). I noticed that one of the two looked paler than the other at feeding time a couple nights...

Fish dying at rapid rate. HELP

I just want to agree with the steps you've taken. Large water change, treating fungal and bacterial, that's what I would have done too. Hopefully you don't lose more, but at this point you just have to ride it out. And I would start a separate 10 gallon tank (cycling) for a future quarantine...

Any specific guppies i can put with my Betta?

Just to play devil's advocate a bit, &no offense meant to those who offered you valuable and lengthy advice, but I have personally kept a betta with guppies many times with no issue - even fancy guppies with fan tails. But I have many tanks, and if I ever saw any aggression, I would have no...

    Molly Fish Not Breeding?

Depositing their milk (milt?) is a very fast process for livebearers, you may just not be catching it when it happens. I really wouldn't worry about this unless a couple months go by and none of your females are showing signs of being pregnant. In that case, maybe your male is just up in age...

Please give your suggestions...easiest (non-livebearer) fish to spawn

Thanks for the advice, I currently have them in my community tank, I haven't seen any aggressiveness or breeding behavior, but I do have plenty of tanks if the need arises. I want to breed them :) so hopefully that works out.

    Electric blue acara tank mates

have you ever seen full grown diamond tetras? they are quite stunning in my opinion, reach about 2-2.5 inches and i think you could have a group of them in a 40 gal with your acara... this is what mine all look like: but there seems to be a long fin variant that is quite beautiful! i...

    Clear slime after water changes

I think I had the same in one of my tanks recently. It was a clear slimy stringy substance the was stuck to (and hanging off of) the aquarium glass. I don't think I would have seen it except for the air bubbles that were present on the goo after the water change. I thought maybe it's...

    What is this plant?

The thing is, the cabomba that I purchased (that created these different colors pictured in the original post) is just one plant. I purchased just one clump at my LFS months ago, and it has grown enough for me to put it in multiple tanks now. In some of my tanks it is the green color, in other...

    What is this plant?

So....since the time that I initially posted this inquiry, I have learned that - this plant is definitely cabomba, I believe it's cabomba carolinia, and it changes color based on your nitrate levels (higher nitrate equals more green, and less nitrate equals more peachy purpleish underleaves)
  37. ChasingFish

    Hi

Well, real plants (I assume) make the fish happier, and they help clean the water by using up the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate (it fertilizes them) - so it keeps your aquarium's water parameters more stable....also they are prettier than plastic. Cheap LED lights make planted tanks a lot easier for...
