Thinking Of Getting Rid Of The Sand

Thinking Of Getting Rid Of The Sand

I dose at about 8am, lights come at 9:30. But I am thinking of changing my lighting times and have yet to work out when to dose when I do this. I may move to CO2 injection

    Aggresive Gourami

Not a good idea as they will fight unless you have a much bigger tank. A lot of people keep just one male, or one male and two females. Regarding the rainbows, I am not to familiar with these but I think they are best kept in small shoals and your tank may be to small for this. Suggest you ask...

    Tank Mates

The penny drops, I have 1 male and 4 females and one of these is always getting harassed, she has black too, now I know it's probably due to the harassment. I have a mating pair so may rehome the rest

    Night Viewing Lighting

Bit confused with that answer, do you recommend lights on between say 2 and 10 and ignore the fact the room in full daylight. That sounds sarcastic but it's not meant to be, just want to clarify

    Aggresive Gourami

I actually float the nest into a homemade netted box until the fry are free swimming after about three days, then put them into a fry tank. The male never gets aggressive if his nest isn't thereto protect. It's up to you really whether you swap or keep

    Night Viewing Lighting

Fair enough, so theoretically I could set the same the lighting schedule even though they are in lit room, eg daylight in the room all day, lights on at 4, off at 10. The only reason I got the night light was I because I thought the lights should coincide with daylight hours, is this standard...

    Aggresive Gourami

When eggs are in the bubble nest it's all down to the male to look after them? He he will kill other fish trying to protect it (I lost three danios the first time) The male has a longer and more pointed dorsal fin than the female. Look up some images on line and see if you can sex them, that...

I thought that at first, and edited out. Seems to be a lot vertical black lines for a GBR?

    Aggresive Gourami

Hi Bradley, Gouramis are egg layers. I assume it is a male and female and the one been chased is the female. This can look quite aggressive but generally doesn't result in damage. My male does it a lot more when he has built a bubble nest and is trying to get the ladies interested. What else...

If think the rams are Bolivian Rams, and to be honest they don't look too happy as their colours are pretty faded. Look them up on here and compare the colours and you will see what i mean

    Best Substrate For Plants?

For me sand is fine, nutrient tabs every couple of months around the roots of the plants that need them, and liquid fert for the rest. Simples!

    Night Viewing Lighting

How long are your lights on for. Mine come on at 9am when the room is light and go off 10 hrs later, which is still pushing a bit. I don't want to come home at night and look at my tank in the dark. Is your tank in a lightless room, allowing the lights to come on late and stay on until 10 pm...

    Best Substrate For Plants?

I think most people have sand substrate and very few issues growing plants. It looks like the serious aquascapers go down the nutrient substrate route, but I am certainly having no issues with sand and plant growth in my tank

    Plant Diagnosis Needed

Thanks , that gives me a good insight. I think they have renamed the 1 the nano 1600? My problem I get very little flow at the front of tank and a dead spots at front middle and at the front on the same side as the filter, so I think this will sort it out. As long as all my sand doesn't end up...

    Plant Diagnosis Needed

Good suggestion, though I'm tight and will be begrudgingly have to pay more, but it's the right thing to do. Got a good relationship with my LFS so shouldn't be a problem Glad you ask, just been looking at them and not to sure what size to get, either the nano 900 or 1600. Tank is 200 litres...

    Plant Diagnosis Needed

You're definitely right, I can direct the koralia anywhere I want. Just got to find a cheap one. Am I right in thinking they give a really good flow but don't blow everything around like mad?

    Eggs?

If they are what I think they are, they slowly dissolve over the course of a few weeks to help water clarity and are entirely harmless. Where did you get the tank, you could ask them if they use these. At the end of the day, if your not sure or can't find out what they are, just remove them for...

Will probably go for an extra filter and a koralia, I am quite heavily stocked. Saying that I have never seen ammonia or nitrite in my water yet since its had fish in

    Plant Diagnosis Needed

Glad you said that, I have a couple of dead spots at substrate level and was think of getting another filter to increase the flow (and filtration) around the tank. Currently getting about 4x tank volume an hour, and was thinking of doubling this. May try this before going down the CO2 route, and...

    New Tank

First and foremost you need to look in here Beginner resource centre, this will give you everything you need to know about setting up your first tank. If you do it right at the beginning, it will save you, and your fish, a lot of problems. Pay special attention to cycling in the link, if you...

    Plant Diagnosis Needed

Can someone tell me whats wrong with my favourite plant. It is still growing like mad but is developing holes in the leaves which start as brown spots and then turn into holes. You will see from the pics I have recently had an algae issue and was wondering if this had anthing to do with it...

    Eggs?

I think they are a product called Pure Aquarium which are added to maintain water clarity. A lot of LFS use them

Thinking Of Getting Rid Of The Sand

I don't know what it says on Easycarbo, but I dose daily first thing before the lights go on. I read than CO2 gas is useless overnight as plants use it to synthesise in light, rightly or wrongly I apply the same logic to liquid CO2

    Tall Plants

Cabomba is a good one but be prepared to cut it back frequently as mine grew about an inch a day. I eventually got rid of it due the side roots looking unsightly. My favourite is Hygrophilia augustifolia, nice and bushy and green. Another tall, fast growing one Vallisneria, but i find this...

Wanting To Take My Planted Tank To The Next Level

I started using Flourish Excel liquid carbon about 5 weeks ago, and it made a difference to my plants. Some of the lower level ones especially picked up a lot. Just a thought, if youre running T8 lighting, it may be worth sticking some T5's in there and put some reflectors on.

    Which Substance Will Be Better?

You shouldn't be sucking the sand up the syphon when cleaning. Cleaning muck off the sand is generally done by moving the syphon in a circular motion about 1cm above the substrate, all the poo gets taken away and the sand stays where it is. You may lose a tiny bit but this stays in the bucket...

    Live Food

Just my opinion really, but when I give live food i always take a glass of tank water, sieve the food through a tea strainer to get rid of the liquid and put the food in the glass of tank water. There always seems to be a lot of crud in the liquid which I don't like to add to the biomass in the...

    My 11 Week Old Tank

It's coming along but got along way to go before i am totally happy with it. Next project is generate a Riccia carpet on the left hand side. I have nearly got rid of the cabomba which just went mad, literally grew an inch a day. Suggestions on how to improve further be gratefully accepted ">

    Filter Flow Rates

Great answers guys, solves a problem i hav been contemplating. I am also planted but worry that i have dead spots, from what you guys say i have got plenty of scope to add more filtration or a powerhead to get rid of these. Any recommendations?

    Filter Flow Rates

Hi, can you help me out please as there are a lot of conflicting views on this. I've got a throughput of approx 5 x volume and I thought this good, now I'm confused again. Won't 10 x volume create a lot of flow in the tank that's some fish will get stressed with?

    Standing Water For A Week

No seriously, the money is not the issue that was a glib comment on my part . The drums are lidded, and it just makes things easier. Rather than connecting hoses, running them through the kitchen, hallway and living room. I syphon straight out of window and tip in two drums, job done. With...
