    Sam's Nano Journal

Sam, have you considered PMDD with PO4, as per JamesC's website? The latest I've read is that low NO3 and PO4 are more suited to soft water. Not sure how much truth there is in that but I figured as you've never had success with EI...

Tell Me About The Kelvin Ratings

18000K. Sounds like Hagen Aqua Glo or Power Glo. Both are ok for plants. Power Glo is brighter. K isn't too important. Plants aren't that fussy, except extremes i.e. actinic.

    Pfk Competition

I have the entries in my office as we speak and I will inform the PFK editorial team by the end of next week who the winners are. I'm not sure when PFK will inform the winners, but I imagine it will be soon after. A feature on the contest will be published in the Nov issue of PFK, out on 3rd...

Black Out To Kill Blue Green Algae

BGA seems to thrive in low circulation. IME it starts in the substrate, where circulation is virtually zero. BGA also needs light. Cut this out via tape etc. and hey presto. The tape was acquired from my workplace. I expect it's available from most DIY stores etc.

Black Out To Kill Blue Green Algae

I've found that blocking light to the substrate/glass helps a lot to prevent BGA. I think most BGA starts from the substrate. Circulation issues are the next most common cause IME. Then low NO3. But I think if you stop light from reaching the substrate depths i.e. through the glass, and...

Whats The Difference Between Dennerle Deponit And Laterite

I have no idea how they come up that figure. Tropica Plant substrate is better. I've tried both.

    Reccommend Me Some New Tubes

No, the Arcadia HO T5s are Plant-Pro. It has a slight hint of pink rendition, but nothing as strong as the T8 Original Tropical. I've heard they combined the two T8 tubes spectrums i.e. mixed Freshwater and Original Tropical into the Plant-Pro. They're a good tube, but better mixed with a...

Whats The Difference Between Dennerle Deponit And Laterite

Laterite contains only iron. Deponit contains a whole host of nutrients. Laterite is cheaper. Deponit is more effective. Both need to be covered with gravel/sand. Tropica Plant Substrate is better still, and good value. http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...mp;filter_id=48

What Does £10 Buy At Aqua Essentials?

    Reccommend Me Some New Tubes

There are others but you'll pay a lot more than £10.99. My advice would be to buy 2 and keep 2 old tubes running. Then when Aqua Essentials stocks some more, get them. This gives the plants less photoshock too.

    Reccommend Me Some New Tubes

Yes, the Zoo Med power ratings are lower for some reason. Don't worry though, the output in terms of light is still excellent.

    My 450gl Planted Tank

Thanks for the info, icliao. pH swings through CO2 injection are commonly accepted as harmless to fish. But you can inject CO2 24/7 as long as you have good gaseous exchange through surface movement, providing sufficient O2 through the night. A solenoid would save you a lot of CO2 though...

    Lighting And Photo Period?

Excel is risky with vallis and egeria at normal dose. Some riccia and moss are knowm to affected too. Most other plants are fine - do better with it. You could try a siesta. Unstable CO2 is different to low CO2 though...

    Lighting And Photo Period?

Well, addressing CO2 would be better... Especially if you are running EI. I'd probably try 9 hours 38w if you are getting algae issues. Changing more water and Flourish Excel will help too. But good CO2 is the long-term solution.

    Happy Birthday George Farmer !

Thanks very much. I can definitely see more grey hairs... :/ I bought some Botia striata today, and an unidentified potted crypt. Exciting aren't I!? Got a cool T-shirt from the wife. Most of our funds are ploughing into the new house at the moment. God knows when I'll get to set the 6'...

    Fish, Plants And Co2

What he said. I run CO2 24/7 with no issues but I have lots of surface agitation. I go through more CO2 but it's a trade off I'm happy with. CO2 is cheap enough. This thread explains the NO3 and PO4 issues well - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=204993

Give it a try. Floating it will give you the best chance as it's near the light and gets CO2 from the air.

    How Does This Sound

Welcome to TFF! Substrate is irrelevant if you stick to moss and ferns. Anubias would be a good choice too. CO2 isn't necessary with your lighting. Personally I'd go for Seachem Flourish Excel, but don't overdose. This supplies carbon in and is good value in a small tank. It's also known...

    125 L. / 33 Gal. Low Light, Low Maintenance

Thanks mate. Otos, schmotos! Only kidding. Great little fish but I'm keeping the Asian theme going (except the A. nana). I do get a few pest snails so I'm considering a group of Botia striata, or the more expensive Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki (dwarf chain loach). The shrimp are keeping any...
